Loving the tractor. I haven't gotten to use it for much yet, but ran into a problem yesterday that, without the tractor wouldn't have gotten solved. I found a heavy piece of slate mixed into the results of a garage cleanup. I'm pretty sure it was from a billiards table. A friend who's in ROTC and I couldn't lift it, so I put the forks on, did a bit of maneuvering, and onto the forks and into the dumpster it went. The tractor projects are going to happen soon. 1. my neighbors had a junk pile of leaves, sticks, and sapling trees behind their garage which spilled a bit into my yard, and I ignored. The new neighbors cleaned their side up. I have ~8-10 saplings to knock down, that ground then needs to be flail mowed, and tilled, then grass seed planted. I also need to clean up an adjacent area used for bees. 2. the top of the back yard was messed up when concrete was removed. I have a pile of mixed soil and gravel that needs to be separated. Once separated the dirt needs to go to the top of the yard, and the gravel behind the garage. 3. the top of the back yard needs to be leveled 4. the gravel "driveway" behind my garage needs to be land planed and leveled, and more gravel added 5. I need to run power to the front parking pad which was poured to charge my Volvo XC90 Recharge hybrid 6. I need to apply ~2 cubic yards of sand to my front yard to level it 7. there is a group of sugar maples in my back yard which are now mature enough to blot out the grass. I need to put down mulch there, and it's difficult to access, so a front end loader will make that take an hour instead of days

Hi Tim. I hope you are well. Ive been thinking of you and your family some as i work on my tractor. Just wanted share my experience with composted wood chips. We have terrible clay soil here in WV and it does not support plant growth well at all, when its dry its so hard no roots can penetrate and when we get rain, it doesnt drain and it rota the roots. We also have a lot of invasive Japanese Stilt Grass and there are no real good methods to control it other than getting a dense stand if grass going which is hard with the soil here. There is one very expenive herbicide that will selectvely kill it with several applications but it would cost thousands to treat our acerage. I started using my tractor to spread hundreds if yards of chips (8 or so inches thick) over the last 2 years and have started replanting grass as well now. The transformation has been incredible. The grass is now thick and we finally have a knit turf that is tough and durable. The soil is still maturing but the quality is dramatically improved in texture, density, organic matter, water penetration, and water holding capacity. I now do not need to water in the heat and the grass shows no signs of stress. All i do is the normal 4 step program and the grass just grows. I can stick a large screwdriver all the way down in the ground in the dry summer heat. The soil stays aerated now. Sure it takes time (although the chips break down much faster being spread out on the ground than in a pile), there is nothing inhave found that gives better and longer lasting soil than this. We have absolutely beautiful, dark and fertile soil now and the cost was minimal. Especially for non iragated yards, i cannot think of anything that gives you a better yard in the long haul. Its a coupeke year investment but man the results are beautiful.
@TractorTimewithTim6 ай бұрын
Wow. So you spread them when still chips, then they broke down over a couple of years? You put them 8” thick?
@airealguy6 ай бұрын
@@TractorTimewithTim I tried a variety of methods and thicknesses now and observed the results. In our front yard, i put down 8-12 inches of chips then spread a 50/50 mix of sand and horse manure and then tilled it all together and planted watersaver RTF. Im not sure that the benefits I got from this were much better than the chips alone yet. It came in ok but it was patchy. However it has thickened up now and is thriving even in the heat and dry spell we have had the past couple weeks. I did 18 inches on the back side 2 years ago and it may be ready to plant this fall. Im doing 6ish on the rest. Its really changed how water flows on the property and stopped erosion for the most part even after the chips broke down. Water just seeps into the ground now and doesnt flow much as surface runoff unless we get a long period of rain followed by a hard rain. In areas where ive done this for years now, i can get 4ish inches of cover to break down in a season. It seems that the biology establishes and then it just eats them up quick. The leaves go too my May now. If yould like to know more, I'd recommend watching "Back to Eden" on youtube by Paul Gautschi. Its a bit of a commitment and takes really about 2 years to get established from my experience. On a flat property like yours it would be super easy because you can have the chip vans drop chips in piles and then just dose them out with a tractor. It only takes 10-15 min to spread out a 20 yard pile with a 1025r and maybe another 20 to grade it out.
@TractorTimewithTim6 ай бұрын
@@airealguypretty cool. Sounds like a great long term way to create a lawn. I would like to be able to build up my existing lawn without having to reseed. Maybe I could add a bit at a time with our manure spreader.
@airealguy6 ай бұрын
@@TractorTimewithTim i think that might work. You can spread the composted chips over the yard and as long as you dont cover the canopy, i think it will be fine. You dont have to worry about it robbing nitrogen or anything like that unless you till the chips into the root zone or pile it really thick. You could spread a couple times in the year and use a dethatcher as a rake to help it get the canopy above the chips. I think it will help and help limit evaporation as well. Do an experiment on part of the yard maybe. Long term, it cant hurt really. Worst case scenario is that it delays thickening up the grass. Best case is it helps soil health long term.

Wood chips as they decompose actually remove more nitrogen from the soil then they add. As they decompose, they become more slow release nitrogen. Compost is more of a soil amendment than it is a fertilizer. Compost is about a 1-1-1 fertilizer at best. You will see in your grass what is happening with nitrogen. It may take several more years for it all to break down. Do a soil test and adjust the pH so the fertilizer becomes available.
