In my early twenties as a young Irish Woman I had a tourist job that happened to see me in New York, Boston and Chicago on a weekly basis. I bought my CD cassette and my Tracy Chapman album and she filled my hours of discovering how being an Irish visitor in USA and being young and my life ahead was meant to be. She was and continues to be the voice I love to hear. She continues to be one of a kind. I love her music, her poetry and her soul. Every young child should have to hear these songs to help understand how to travel the world with open eyes and a kind heart. Grateful that my time of being young had an artist like Tracy to listen to. xx

I was married three months before this performance, and my wife and me immediately thought this song was a kind of manifesto. I lost her and my little girl in a car accident four years ago, and I've played this song repeatedly in memoriam. I taught my girl guitar to this song, taught her what a capo is, and we sang it pretty loud. She said she learned the hard way.

I was walking by Golden Gate University in San Francisco and saw Tracy walking towards me and I stopped. I simply stopped and stared because how could such an inspiration be right in front of me? I've never heard a artist that so represents my feelings, the yearnings, the aches, the growth, the determination, the spirit. She walked by and I don't even think she saw me but I will always remember that day.

Oh my mama told me 'Cause she say she learned the hard way Say she want to spare the children She say don't give or sell your soul away 'Cause all that you have is your soul Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul I was a pretty young girl once I had dreams I had high hopes I married a man he stole my heart away He gave his love but what a high price I paid And all that you have is your soul Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul Why was I such a young fool Thought I'd make history Making babies was the best I could do Thought I'd made something that could be mine forever Found out the hard way one can't possess another And all that you have is your soul Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul I thought, thought that I could find a way To beat the system To make a deal and have no debts to pay I'd take it all take it all I'd run away Me for myself first class and first rate But all that you have is your soul Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul Here I am I'm waiting for a better day A second chance A little luck to come my way A hope to dream a hope that I can sleep again And wake in the world with a clear conscience and clean hands 'Cause all that you have is your soul Don't be tempted by the shiny apple Don't you eat of a bitter fruit Hunger only for a taste of justice Hunger only for a world of truth 'Cause all that you have is your soul Oh my mama told me 'Cause she say she learned the hard way Say she want to spare the children She say don't give or sell your soul away 'Cause all that you have is your soul All that you have All that you have All that you have Is your soul

We love you, Tracy. This song affects us still today as it did decades ago when we were so young and had our whole lives ahead of us. BEAUTIFUL words. Helps me when I need to know that I am not alone; there are plenty of us who can still resist the temptation of the shiny apple. There is comfort in knowing that all we truly have is our soul. Puts everything else in its place. THANK YOU!

The lighting in this live performance video...shone like A STAR...like the Bethlehem star in fact!🤔😇...smh This divine channel called TRACY Chapman...and her music, comes from the creator of ALL that is. This entire album came out when I was just 10..and was engrained...integrated into my being, eversince! It heals me with every listening experience...even at 46😢😊 Thank you Tracy for answering your call to service for humanity.🫡... If anyone is familiar w her backstory...she never " conciously" aspired to be on the world stage so to speak...,but it found her, back in her college days, and she rose to the occasion y'all...❤❤❤🎉

+zeezen57 Me, too. Like someone put a mirror in front of my conscious, and another one behind my spine...so that I couldn't look away and had to examine myself fully, from infinite perspectives. Like when there are mirrors above the sinks on opposite sides of a bathroom, facing each other. I don't know if that makes any sense to you, or anyone, but it's the best way I could articulate what I experienced.
