@@staceyott7136 TC is notoriously shy and has always been uncomfortable performing. However something magical happens when she does a duet. Suddenly she is all smiles and really seems to be enjoying herself. It was also obvious that after all these years she has lost nothing and if anything has grown as a performer.

Combs credits this song (from two years before he was born) with making him want to be a singer. It is a pivotal life event for him, and his goal was to share that experience with the next generation. He wanted her to get all the praise she deserves and never be forgotten.

His Dad played it when Luke was a kid and he says he always loved the song. If you listen to his version and Tracy’s original, he didn’t do too much to it. He said there was nothing to do to song. He kept the song as is except for adding his voice and the country vibe to it. I considered it as an homage to Tracy. He didn’t play guitar in their performance together letting most of the focus be on her.😢I thought their voices blended well. I liked the unison when they sang together. He speaks so highly of her and you can tell the respect and awe he has for her on stage with her.

My favorite part, apart from Tracy actually performing, was seeing the level of reverence that the eclectic group of artists in the audience were showing, from Taylor Swift to Killer Mike and Jelly Roll. I saw her peform this live in 1989 and this took me right back there, one of my favorite performers of all time. Her humbleness is one the things I admire so much about her.

This song was written by someone who saw these tragedies around her. She knew these people. She felt the people who hoped in the face of despair, and the despair won. I heard it twice, and I couldn't listen to it. It slayed me, but I never forgot it. It's one of the greatest American songs in history. Luke Combs grew up far away from Tracy's environment. His father played it on the radio when they were driving. He just loved the song. He didn't feel the excruciating pain of it at all, and you hear that absence when he sings it. Then he got to be a country music arena artist, and he recorded it. His star power got it to no. 1 on the country charts, and of course the greatness of the song. To hear the woman who wrote this song out of pain and the man who never felt it, sing together on the same stage was an unbelievable experience.

There's a couple of articles about the way this came together. It took nearly a year and a lot of coordination to pull off. This was the first song Luke learned to play on guitar and it has been his favorite for years. And people win awards for other people's songs all the time. Depends on the award as to who wins it. Tracy won the CMA Song of the Year award as songwriter, while Luke and the song's producer and track engineer won Single of the year for it.

Luke Combs caused a stir when he covered this song; when asked why, he simply said it had always been one of his favorite songs. I also thought it was a bit disingenuous that certain people felt it was it was improper for a white county singer to sing a song originally written and sung by a black performer, when TC genre was contemporary folk/ pop, not a genre known to have large black audience. For her part TC was thrilled her music was being heard by a new audience. The beauty of this collaboration was for 5:20 min, "Across the lines...that separates whites from blacks" were temporarily blurred. TC is simply a national treasure and it was wonderful seeing her smiling and performing again.

Why don’t you all do your research before you start commenting it is so frustrating. That people get on here and don’t do the work because you would know that he loved this song from a child and it was one of his favorite songs he sang with his dad, and that Tracy Chaplin was fully on board for him to record this song, and he is not the only person that have recorded this song over the years, he gave her mad respect and honored by bringing her on the stage and letting her sing her song that he loves. Not only that people went back and now her original is number one and she won the Grammy for that song when it first came out and again in this season, so please do your homework if you’re gonna come on here and call yourself a content creator.

What an iconic song! So glad to see this. About how awards work. It depends upon the award. If it is a performance award, then that goes to the singer. Luke was nominated for best country solo performance for Fast Car but he did not win. Had it been nominated for best song, that is a songwriting award. If Luke’s version had won, the award would have gone to Tracy, the original songwriter. This song of course has won Tracy 3 Grammys and nominated for Song of the year, record of the year, album of the year, it’s one of the greats. Another example off the top of my head would be the country song Better Man by Little Big Town. They won Best Country group Performance for their version of the song. But they didn’t write the song, Taylor Swift did. So Little Big Town’s version was also nominated for Best Country Song, which is a songwriters award, so it was Taylor’s nomination. Classic song. Their version phenomenal, Grammy winning. But I prefer Taylor’s Version of the song.

He took a lot of flack for recording her song because he was white, a man and a country artist. People tried to make it political and obviously Tracy Chapman approved. She is making a lot of royalties because he re released, just like Dolly does from Whitney covering her song. In a world full of Taylor Swifts and Beyonces we need more Tracy Chapmans. She just proved she doesnt need fancy stage shows, designer gowns, millions of dollars in jewelry or auto tune to outshine every damn person in that auditorium. Luke Combs knew he was in rhe presence of greatness and everyone watching knew they were too. This song is from my college days and I love everything about it then and now
