Tracy Lawrence Reveals Which Hit Song He Didn’t Like + We’re Shook

Tracy Lawrence admits one of his biggest hits was a song he just didn't like. So he made a compromise.

Tracy Lawrence is revisiting and updating his catalogue with the Hindsight 2020 trilogy of albums. Many of the songs are 20 or even 30 years old, which means enough time has passed for the singer to admit there were some he was strongly encouraged to record.
At least one of those songs worked out well for him on two different levels. Talking to Taste of Country Nights, Lawrence - who just dropped Vol. 2: Price of Fame in August - makes a strong case for compromise. Hits like "I See It Now" and "If the World Had a Front Porch" are mixed with new songs like the title-track (an Eddie Montgomery collaboration) and "I'm a Man," his wife's favorite. These are all new recordings, which could be problematic.
"I wish I hadn't of down such range-y songs," he says laughing as he thinks about that studio time. "Those really high notes are a challenge sometimes."
"Somebody Paints the Wall" and "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" are two more old songs made new. Each of his eight No. 1 singles seems likely to find a home somewhere on one of the three albums, but then again maybe not.
In addition to sharing secrets of his catalog he also dishes on who some of his famous friends are, 15 years after taking "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" to No. 1. Finally, the 53-year-old takes the 60-Second Song Challenge and reveals which contemporary pop superstar he's a huge fan of.

I'm 40, and a Hardcore Metal Head. My Dad listened to Country in the 80's and 90's. I still remember all the songs from them days. They're like a staple in my mind. Going on road trips with my wife, she'll play a 90's country playlist and we'll sing every song that's played. Country music will never be like that again.

man the texas boys were killing it back in the day..I remember his videos..time traveling, all to be continues, all hit songs, that doesn't happen now, reallly sad what happened to CMT and GAC and all the music television networks, little known fact, tracy survived 4 gun shots right before his first album dropped

One of my favorite songs he has done was Used to the Pain by Mark Nesler. It was a great song when it came out in the 90s and it was a pleasant surprise when I heard Tracy's version one day on the radio. I used to have the original Greatest Hits on CD and the one with that song on it. Still have the cases but the CDs are gone lol.

Under-rated super talent, and yes I gave him a standing ovation in concert at Columbia MD in the 1990's. I recall he got a great review the next day in the local papers. Thanks for Texas Tornado -- that song always reminds me of a close friend that was at death's door but miraculously recovered.

If anybody has access to talk to Tracy Lawrence, he should know that we his fans absolutely love the Texas Tornado. Of course my niece I had nicknamed Tumbleweed because of Fred Flintstone's uncle Tex calling Pebbles Tumbleweed. When she heard Texas Tornado she decided Tracy was singing about her.

I was actually impressed with his re-records. Often when people do that, it sounds vastly different than the original versions and usually not as good - there are a lot of 90s singers I can think of where that happened. Here, there are changes but they are usually small and don't hurt the song at all - for a lot of them, I am not sure if I like rhw original version or the new version better, either one would have been a hit as they both are good.
