Yes trading material when up can help you secure a win faster and easier. When down material complicating the game as much as possible helps to create chances to get back into the game. Great analysis and commentary! Awesome wins in the US chess championships for the past several years also.

Woah, how have I never been introduced to the idea that you should trade pawns when down on material? It makes a lot of sense but I've somehow never heard this. Thanks so much Irina and the fine folks at Saint Louis Chess Club for this great lecture.

Overall an instructive lecture, but for me, what spoils this and other STL chess club lectures is the lack of a microphone in the audience. The lecturer asks a question but we don't hear the answer/suggestion from the floor clearly enough. When the lecturer then makes a comment such as "Why would you do that?", or "Yes that's a good move, but there's a better one." the viewer is in the dark. Perhaps the lecturer could repeat the comment from the floor before answering it?

In the concept of trading down, why not just Rxe3 in the very first combination ?- seems less/nothing to calculate- just run with b-pawn

In the final game, I think after 1...a4 white can go 2.d8=N+! Ka7 3.Re7+ and black has no defence: 3... Kb8 4.Rb7+ Ka8 5.Nc7+ +- 3...Ka8 4.Nc7+ Kb8 (4...Ka7 5.Nxa6+ Kxa6 5.Ra7+! +-) 5.Nxa6+ Qxa6 and white has enough material for the queen and an attack

The position at 18:45 is actually a draw. Black plays g3, White has to take the pawn with hxg3 and Black can play Ke3 and later Kf2. But White wins if he takes the pawn h7 first instead of attacking Black's g-pawn with the King.

Krushing the opponent
@alexandeon7 жыл бұрын
at 6:20 it could lead to a draw , black kind could take the white pawn. Black didn't have to resign.
@JamesColemanChess7 жыл бұрын
It's totally lost for Black. It's true that if the b-pawn rushed non-stop it would be caught but Black's king won't be able to cope with it AND stay to guard the k-side. It's actually white's f-pawn that will likely win it.
@mdmahafuzur5347 Жыл бұрын
Nice your voice.
@pokerchannel6991 Жыл бұрын
at 4:02 you have not given the answer yet to the question. I paused vid. So, I am going to say you are trying to force a queen trade so that black will have little opportunity to cause any damage with queen. And you are still with a rook and that can mate down the road no issue. That is my guess to the question you asked the class. Am I right? By doing the queen trade and leaving him not enough stuff to mate you, you ensure yourself at least a draw, but more likely, a win, with your rook, which he does not have.

5:00 The Idea is: Take my bishop with the queen or the pawn. And believe me, you have to do. With the queen: I take the queen back, than the bishop. No good idea. With the pawn: OK, i take your bishop, you may take my rook, then i give check and attack your queen, so you have to take my queen. And now my king comes into play. Look at my golden pawn on the b-file. Are you worry ? You should ! But i will not defend it. I activate my king to eat youre pawns and get him in a winning position in the center, while you MUST eat my golden pawn at look with tears in your eyes from far away. GAME OVER. 11:00 Seems to be hopeless. But i have a vision for a stalemate...castling the robber on a8 ;-) But i am wrong, the king do the other way. ;-(

@swalice3 жыл бұрын
So that women have a better opportunity and financial incentive / encouragement to pursue chess. This is because there are very few women in chess, mainly because of existing sexist attitudes in chess institutions, and also many other factors. I cant remember the exact statistic but between 95%-98% of GMs in america are men.
@coryc7933 жыл бұрын
Yo 18:47 is not win for white black can draw by playing the move g3 (only drawing move). g3 h4 (hg is bad) ke3 kg4 kf2 kh3 h5! which is stalemate what a funny position. Further proves irina's point that you should play b3 and let black fix the pawns but push the pawn with no pawn in front of it in pawn majority

... the STATEMENT of Irina Krush "unfortunately for black the transition to a pawn-endgame was the bad time to do it" at 12:03 is WRONG , because the transition to the pawn-endgame is in reality remis , for example : 1. ... Nf5 2.Bxf5 gxf5 3.Ke3 Kf6 4.Kd4 Ke6 5.Kc5 Kd7 6.Kd5 Kc7 !! ( ... and not the wrong 6. ... f6 ?? of Irina Krush ) ... kindly regards Lutz
@vertaz479 жыл бұрын
Lutz Neweklowsky 6. ... Kc7 loses to 7. Ke5
@Moremover9 жыл бұрын
Carl Tsai ... your STATEMENT "6. ...Kc7 loses to 7.Ke5" is also WRONG - after 7.Ke5 there is no losing - the position is ALWAYS remis - for example : 6. ... Kc7 7.Ke5 Kc6 8.Kf6 Kd5 9.Kxf5 Kd4 10.Kf6 Ke3 11.Kg5 Ke4 12.Kh6 Kf5 13.Kxh5 Kxf4 14.Kh6 Kf5 15.Kg7 Kg4 16.h5 Kxh5 17.Kxf7 Kg5 18.Ke6 Kg6 19.a4 Kg5 20.Ke5 Kg6 21.Ke6 Kg7 22.Kd5 Kf7 23.Kc6 Ke6 24.a5 Ke5 25.Kc5 Ke4 26.Kc6 Ke5 27.Kb7 Kd6 28.Kb8 Kd7 29.Kxa7 Kc7 30.Ka8 Kc8 31.a7 Kc7 32.a6 Kc8 remis kindly regards and have a nice day Lutz
@vertaz479 жыл бұрын
Lutz Neweklowsky The line you provided frankly makes no sense at all, for example, why wouldn't white simply play 8. Kxf5 ? On 8. ... Kd5 9. Kg5 Ke4 10. Kxh5, and white will queen the h pawn.
@Moremover9 жыл бұрын
Carl Tsai your STATEMENT "why wouldn't white simply play 8. Kxf5 ? On 8. ... Kd5 9. Kg5 Ke4 10. Kxh5, and white will queen the h pawn." is WRONG , because it is not possible to queen the h-pawn . After 10.Kxh5 it goes on with 10.Kxh5 Kxf4! 11.Kh6 Kg4 12.h5 Kh4 13.a4 Kg4 14.a5 Kh4 15.Kg7 Kxh5! (no queening) 16.Kxf7 Kg5 17.Ke6 Kf4 18.Kd5 Kf5 19.Kc6 Ke6 20.Kb7 Kd7 21.Kxa7 Kc7 22.Ka8 Kc8 23.a7 Kc7 24.a6 Kc8 remis kindly regards and have a nice day Lutz
@ralphschraven3399 жыл бұрын
+Lutz Neweklowsky I could argue that 6. ... f6 is a perfectly reasonable move because White will never be able to out-flank Black since the pawns on a7, f6 and f5 do not allow the White king on the fourth rank to do that even when it has the opposition. If f6 has been played and the White king gains the opposition on the fifth rank, Black will lose due Black reaching either e6 or c6 and going on to win the game. Now, we can all keep posting lengthy variations and keep arguing, or just be content with the fact that chess engines can provide a definite answer for us. 6. ... f6 is perfectly reasonable (read: a draw) and if you want to play 6. ... Kc7 you will also achieve a draw, as confirmed by Stockfish 6. Neither of those moves deserve question marks or exclams, except for sarcastic use such as when GM Finegold says "Exclam!".

She is a pretty woman, obviously. And she looks as though she feels both empowered and nervous about being an intellectual and pretty woman in a mind field dominated by men. She KNOWS the male students are entranced by both her knowledge and presence. HOWEVER, she has done a great job explaining and relating her thoughts to the presented situations under those conditions and any rude and distasteful remark by any male or female is most definitely going to hamper the progress of beautiful women being comfortable outside of sexual appeal and for that matter, on those who voice such a stupid (albeit accurate at the basest of levels of humanity) comment. Go watch vines and comment on "sluts" who are trying to be just that. This woman is just smart and pretty. A Gem.

@Tom Wostoncroft This is so sexist; and since in this world there are lots of you, women are in a better situation and over-defended while men are undefended so you can survive what you are saying. Now what if I try to say the reciprocal saying which has the same amount of badness and sexism but now against women and which says: "Why are the men in chess so good looking, and the women in chess so ugly?" could anyone forgive this? Or even if we use a weakened form of this principle wondering if men are better in chess this would be considered as sexism by many.
