I think it’s the one towards the end of the movie,when after Valentine has proven himself,Randolph Duke,who was the one arguing that success has to do with environment,not race, still wants to get rid of him,saying “You think I’d let a nigger run the company?”, Showing that in the end he was just as racist as his brother. Unfortunately that scene has since been censored, but it really proves the whole point of this wonderful anti racism movie.

I think the best scene is the one that really proves the point of the movie,it’s when after Valentine has proven himself and Mortimer pays Randolph the $1 bet, they then discuss if they are going to send Valentine back to the streets, and Randolph (who is supposed to be the less racist of the two ) says “Of course! You think I’d have an N word run the company!” Showing that in the end he is still a racist. The scene doesn’t work as well now that you cannot say that word,no matter what context you use it in,not even in an anti racism movie. Same thing with Aykroyd in black face on the train

A good movie gets the usual praise and adulations from the fans, comments like, “Great Movie”, “One of the best”, “great cast” and on and on and so forth…BUT the true measure of greatness as shown by the above comments are the types of praise, in which commenting strangers all come together with the unintentional result of, in a way acting like like friends and acquaintances sharing their favorite moments and lines, reliving the movie scene by scene with each other as though we had all literally just stepped out of the theater on the original night of its release repeating our favorite lines and moments with the same level of heartfelt joy we experienced so long ago. Now that is the true measure of a great film. To feel nearly the same emotions and the joy of sharing them with others after so many years have past. True thanks to ALL involved with this film and the joy, entertainment and memories it created and brought to so many.

The genius of Eddie Murphy that EVERYBODY misses is the scene on the train where he's chanting. He is actually saying the name of the African Actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. CLASSIC! I didn't even realize it until years after LOST was off the air.

I love Denholm Elliot in this film. When I first saw it as a quite young man, naturally Jamie Lee caught my adolescent attention and held it for some time. She still does, of course! But on many, many re-watchings, my appreciation for the work that Denholm Elliott did as Coleman the butler rises every time. He is so mellow, so under-stated, yet his micro-expressions are on point every single time. Two of my favorites: When he is pretending not to know his old boss Winthorpe and is about to close the door on him. He is very stern, and plays his role (I refer to Coleman playing the role of someone who doesn't know Winthorpe) so convincingly: "Coleman? There's no Coleman here. You've made a mistake." But just before he closes the door, there is a flash of pity on his face, of self-disgust, of "my old boss Winthorpe may be an asshole, but my real bosses the Duke brothers are major total assholes; I hate myself for doing this terrible thing to Winthorpe, who may be a snob, but doesn't deserve this." All said with a single expression in a fraction of a second before he closes the door. It is all written on his face, and you can tell. Brilliant acting! Then near the end of the film, as they are hatching the plot to get back at the Dukes. Two words: "Egg nog?" Decades of resentment, class warfare, pent-up frustration boiled into two seemingly innocuous words, delivered with more vitriol than they have ever held before. Denholm is a genius.

I was 12 years old when Trading Places came out. We didn't have HBO to watch it so, I called and had it installed while my mom was at work. Eventually, my mom found out what I did, cancelled our HBO channel, and beat my ass with a belt. Hard!! I didn't care, I wanted to see Eddie Murphy! 😂

That was Don Ameche that said turn those machines back on , I remember seeing him with Henry Fonda in some movie about Alexander Graham Bell and the Telephone and Don Ameche played Watson And I think Jimmy Belushi's first film , he was in the gorilla suit until they stole it and put that guy Mr. Beeks inside of it

Indeed. They approach the roles of a butler with the haughtiness and perspective that regardless of their status as working-class 'servants', they hold an air snobbish disdain for their employers (Arthur, Todd) and their boorishness. Denholm had barely hidden loathe for Todd / Akroyd and some paternal concern for Billy Ray Valentine / Eddie Murphy, trying to help Billy navigate this new environment without becoming the a-hole Todd was.
