I actually grew up watching a lot of really old Don Ameche movies, because he was a big star in the 40s and I used to see them on daytime TV. But by the time he was cast in this, he hadn't been in a movie for 30 years, didn't have an agent and most people thought he was dead. It brought him a late in life career revival, and I love that.
@lawrenceallen80964 сағат бұрын
Aw, you cut out the best part! The shot that made Eddie Murphy and star! Duke: "...bacon, like you'd see in a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich." Then Eddie Murphy breaks the 4th wall and looks straight at the camera with "THAT LOOK!" That made him immortal, back in the day.

Don Ameche as well! He was VERY opposed to saying the N word, but Eddie Murphy talked him into it. He was also not happy with saying any curse words or anything racially biased. He insisted on getting it all in one take so he'd only have to say any of it once. The story is that he told the director that he was out of luck if he didn't like it.

If I recall correctly, it was released in the Summer of ‘83, and I saw it on VHS rental when it was available by March of 1984. Always a favorite to watch, and fun to see reactions to it. Glad y’all enjoyed this one! These were the top rentals of 1984: 01. Raiders of the Lost Ark 02. Risky Business 03. Flashdance 05. 48 Hours 05. Tootsie 06. Mr. Mom 07. Sudden Impact 08. Trading Places 09. Blue Thunder 10. Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller 12:53 -yep, that’s Frank Oz voice of Yoda, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear. He was also Collins (US Embassy) in An American Werewolf in London. 32:24 Baggage handler: “The black one must be the female.” Beeks: “muffled scream” LOLOLOL Y’all were rolling with laughter the entire scene!

Fun fact: The original movie title "Trading Places" is a play on words: on the one hand it means 'trading places' - the commodity futures exchange plays an important role - and on the other 'switching places', which is what happens to the two heroes of the movie. A great comedy with plenty of sarcasm and social criticism. Incredibly good actors. When the film was released here in Germany, I went to several screenings at the weekend. And as I'm writing this, I suddenly feel old... 😁

Do you remember a few years ago when "Gamestop" stocks went crazy high in value and a bunch of young "new" investors got rich as Hell? That whole event was based on the 3rd act of this movie. That event even happening sent shockwaves through Wallstreet, AND on top of that, had a lot of "trading rules" changed to prevent it from happening again (non-rich people playing the game better than those who have been doing it for years). I have to admit, I sat here watching that whole mess, and laughing like Hell at it. I didn't make any $$$$ off of it, but it was (to me) HILARIOUS to see a bunch of rich a$$holes who take advantage of people every single day, get their "comeuppance" and watch them get MAD AF!. A "real life" event that made the ending of this movie even MORE satisfying than it was originally. Life imitating art.

The fact that this film is a timeless comedy classic is shown in the fact that these 2 women who probably weren't born when this film was released, can appreciate the comic genius of Eddie Murphy and the great performances of Ackroyd and Curtis. I really like the name of this video series. Some might call it a bit corny, but I love the idealistic nature of their outlook which is inherent in the name "Force of Light". I think Trading Places is a fantastic movie. At the time it came out it managed to fuse comedy, race, crime, and social structures seamlessly. It begins with the greed of a couple of multi-millionaires and a young Ivy League educated elite who wants to do good but is somewhat corrupted by the corporate structure of the company he works for and the influence of its founders. But they take this narrative and twist in a way that captures our interest. The poor minority who is believed to commit a crime (though he tries to return the brief case) is sent to prison temporarily while the elite, corporate executive wants to press full charges. With the mega-wealthy owners wanting to reverse the roles is where the story really kicks in (all because of a science experiment). It would be difficult to pull off such a movie where class, race, poverty and wealth merge while trying to keep the mood light, funny, and enlightening. The film is brilliantly put together and the acting is really good. The whole stock market scene at the end where the good guys short the stock because the bad guys want to corner the market is effective and gives us what we wanted...the bad guys going bankrupt. It took guts to write this script and make the movie. Amazing film!

1. The booking officer is Frank Oz. (Miss Piggy/various Muppets/Yoda) 2. Beeks/Paul Gleason😇 also played Richard Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot assistant police captain in "Die Hard". 3. Landis didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis because she had always been a "scream queen" and he didn't know if she had the chops for comedy. 4. When everyone pauses in the restaurant it's a play on the old "EF Hutton" commercial. "When EF Hutton speaks everybody listens". 5. One of the most VHS pauses in history. Jamie Lee Curtis.😍😋😈 6. GOOF: Where did Louis get the gun AND all those drugs for only $50?🤑Even in 1983. 7. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. He also had an issue with the N word. 8. There's an Easter egg in "Coming to America" with the Duke brothers. Eddie Murphy at his best.
