What I love about Coalcracker Bushcraft is how simple and yet pragmatic all of these videos are. I have stayed away from an axe sheath because I thought it would be too difficult to achieve. Thanks so much.

Really nice to see someone making something with thin leather, and not vegetable tan! I have a tonne of low to mid range leather scraps, and Im looking for projects for them. This video is a breath of fresh air mate. I have some axes and hatchets with no sheaths, and about 3kg of leather scrap. I think I will follow your guidance, maybe sew in one or two layers of welt, and do some DIY sheaths to protect them. Really appreciate this video. KZbin is full of vids about how to make sheaths out of super expensive tan, but this is the first I found using more affordable leather material. Thx

FYI it would be really easy to use/modify this pouch design so it ties off around the handle behind the axe head like an overstrike protector. Good skills mate

Last small details, wrap head in plastic wrap, boil the leather and wet form. Boiling will stiffen leather (at least the pouch area), and wet forming will customize the fit, and even can reinforce the cut for the strap.

Very cool! I would worry about the handle, if it's able to "swing" at all, kind of wallowing out the slot on the bottom. (Hey, SOMEBODY has to worry about this stuff, LOL!) It made me think about the possibility of maybe putting a couple of stitches through both layers right at the ends of the slot. I thought that might strengthen the potential stress points.

I just made two bit covers, they don't cover the entire axe head, just the cutting edge. I made it from an old Craftsman tool belt. I incorporated the " Craftsman " logo that was stamped on the belt. It runs right down the blade and looks super cool. For the time being I have it sewn with small nylon cordage, I plan to get rivets and rivet the leather together and then put straps on each one so that you can fasten the cover to the bit. For now I have elastic cordage holding the cover on, it works well but doesn't look so swell . Great video, I really like the look of that cover. I may end up making a couple of these too :P Thanks a ton for all the tips and tricks you share.

I’m pretty sure this will not work for my splitting maul. I was just using the sledgehammer side to sink some angle iron in the ground to support a post on a deck I was working on and the blade side cut my leg without it barely touching me. I need to make a sheath for it now.

Really like the distressed / traditional look of that sheath. I'm planning to glue & sew some distressed leather on some veg tanned leather and put a welt in it, but make one in this style. Fun video! And yet another reason to carry some scrap leather and artificial sinew with you in the woods.

A bit off topic : But I am having thoughts on all of the Bushcraft shelters, not addressing wet. Getting wet and how to stay dry and warm. This is the season where thermal sensitivity is paramount. An example was watching a 55 gallon drum liners vid that showed a raised bed, which was covered by what I saw as a tarp to small. The water hits the drum liners and you will be wet. I am seeing the same across all Bushcraft channels. Now I am just a Nube and have very little experience, but It has happened to me and I was hoping this could be incorporated into future videos across the board.

Thanks for the video. It comes at a time when I need to make a cover for a tomahawk. I assume this will work on one of those as well as it will on an ax, but I don't have any leather. For that reason I was wondering if you think I could use a piece of hyde from a farm raised Nauga that I harvested back in the late 70s?

Good video. Don't forget to condition that cabin-axe's wood handle with come boiled linseed oil. What about making a how-to-video for fabricating a new Leather Handle Guard/Collar for Axes and Hatchets? Not all wood handles are designed the same, some are long-tear-drop shaped, so how do we achieve the best collar fit?

awesome! cool idea, if you could maybe suggest how to make a belt loop for an axe that doesn't result in the axe hanging at a weird angle? I have not had great luck with trying to make one myself. I believe it is because I have a strap on my axe sheath that sits just under the butt of the axe.
@beinghuman32254 жыл бұрын
I made one side of my loop higher and that seems to work well, but you need thicker leather. And I'm sure eventually it will fold over. Ooo, just jad an idea 💡 sew the loop on crooked 👍🏽

I don't want to seem negative it was a nice project but it seems like you could have definitely got a little closer to the edge of your leather piece. Not that the rest is wasted necessarily but I feel like you could have had a lot more usable piece left over. Thoughts?
