I find it interesting that many deciduous trees seem to have as many branches as possible to fit within the canopy profile. There is very little branch separation and negative space between the branches, it gives the trees more of a topiary look than that of a natural tree. Is this the modern style you mention in the title? The display area is absolutely beautiful and so are the trees!

There was a guide tour by Mr. Taguchi who was a curator of Omiya bonsai museum. He explained that the purpose of this section was to introduce the new way of bonsai display for the current living style. Traditionally bonsai is displayed in Tokonoma and hence the solemn bonsai style makes a harmony with it. But nowadays many houses in Japan do not have Tokonoma. Bonsai which is light with a flaw like the red pine in the video matches the current home decorations. There could be other thoughts which relate to the modern sense in each tree but as far as I understand the defenition of the modern in this section is more for the style of the display. Thank you very much for your comment!
