Traditional Tenebrae I of X

Traditional Tenebrae at St. Mary Church, Norwalk, CT, March, 31, 2010. Tenebrae, the Office of Darkness, is the early morning offices of Matins and Lauds anticipated the evening before during the Sacred Triduum. This somber yet moving service consists of a series of psalms and readings, including the stirring performance of the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah on Israel's desolation. As the psalms are completed, the candles and lights in the church are gradually extinguished, until all are left in darkness awaiting the returning light of the resurrected Christ.

Speaking as a mon Catholic i can understand the attraction of the Roman Catholic Church and its various forms of worship and ceremonies and rituals. Also good to see worship without women.

This was 9 years ago...you should have seen last evening's Tenebrae. Mr. Pio had to scrounge up extra seating as the Sanctuary was packed. The most exquisite and moving liturgy I've seen on Maundy Thursday, anywhere. St. Mary of Norwalk: Ground Zero for the magnificent Tradition of the Holy Catholic Church in America...and perhaps the world.

Considering the mostly terrible American accent, the Latin was excellent. It is a pity the church gave up the Latin. Although before my time in the Church I simply find it more prayerful and unifying with the world. Thank you.

Thankfully you can still find the Latin Mass celebrated in select churches (with growing communities!). We attend our parish's Latin mass exclusively and find it so much more transcendent than anything the spirit of Vatican II could cook up.

Pray tell, sir.... what is a 'Latin;' accent, exactly? Is that the way native, first-language 'Latin Speakers' pronounce the language? The way you remember it from your youth in the 3rd or 4th Century? If it the way that native Italian speakers pronounce it in Rome? Is it the way that Belgian monks tell us it should be pronounced? Is it the way it is pronounced in Continental locales such as Germany or Poland? I'd really, REALLY like to know. The idiocy one can find online any random day of the week, the gift of arrogant poseurs who feel it is their God-endowed responsibility to tell everyone else in the world how wrong they are about absolutely EVERYTHING...

@@JS-yk7pv Exactly---it's ECCLESIAL Latin. I believe speakers can approximate satisfactorily what it sound like since there is an unbroken, spoken line. I have met many Latin snobs--actually I believe he's expressing his views on Americans in general.

I thought Tenebrae was supposed to happen on the morning of the respective day.
