I loved this video. I´m 25 years old and I´ve never hunted big game but I love the idea of it. Here in Argentina (but not in my province) we have red deer, pigs and some other but less common big game animals. However it is really hard to hunt because public land hunting doesn´t exist here. To make matters worse, bowhunting (especially with traditional bows) is kind of a dying thing here. The only person in my family that hunts occasionally is my uncle but he´s a rifle hunter and the kind of people who believes it´s impossible to hunt pigs with a trad bow. Nonetheless, since I started watching your channel I´m inspired to begin my journey in traditional bowhunting. I know it will be a tough one but I´m sure I´ll enjoy it. Anyways, thanks for showing the things you can do on your own. Keep inspiring young people, you´re good at it.

Love this! Glad you are getting into traditonal bowhunting even when most around you think its crazy. You will love it. Its hard work but so rewarding. And you will not have any problems being able to harvest animals with Your tradbow.

First deer was with a gun but was big doe and shot her at about 50yds. Boom shot goes off and she reacts to sound of gun reverberating off the ridge behind her. She tucked her head and death ran straight at me and died at about 5ft. What I really remember was the overwhelming flush of emotions I felt and couldn’t control. I tried to let out a celebratory hoot but instead burst into tears cuz I’d never killed anything other then birds with my BB gun and this had me feeling terrible for some reason. Well by time my Dad got to me he explained that feeling this way was good as I’d just taken another animals life you should feel a little sad for the loss of life but that I needed to be proud of he effort it took to harvest her and that she now was gonna provide our family with clean, natural, healthy food. I was hooked immediately!!! I was 16yrs old and my 1st bow kill came 4yrs later even though I had passed on many deer before I shot one with bow because ME was a 1 deer state and once you shot a deer you were done for rest of the year and unless it was a big buck we didn’t wanna end our season early. To this day I still have very mixed feelings about killing an animal. I get choked up every time but now the celebration sets in real quick as I understand better at 50yrs old how privileged I am to be able to enjoy the woods, time with my family and friends and be able to take these beautiful animals while providing such good food for our families. I believe hunting gives you so many life lessons I think if everyone was made to do it we would be much better as a society!!!

Storytime with Jason...love it! I had a similar experience at 19 years old (only with a rifle). That was 40 years ago but I remember every little detail like it was yesterday. Many decades later I went bowhunting for the first time last week. I'm late to the party as far as trad archery hunting but so glad I finally found it. Really enjoyed this video...Thanks!

Great story! Took me 4 seasons to get my first bow kill hunting high pressure public land. Like you, none of my family hunted and there was a lot of trial and error involved. First was finding deer that weren’t nocturnal and second was learning to the difference between shooting live animals vs targets. I could shoot targets much better than my buddies but they were putting kill shots on deer and i wasn’t. Most of my buddies were only proficient enough to hit a paper plate at 20 yards but somehow were way better than me at shooting deer. It was definitely discouraging for a while.

Awesome story Jason! It’s my first season hunting with a trad bow and so far I’ve shot over the backs of 3 does. I’ve killed plenty with a compound but finally decided I wanted more of a challenge…and what a challenge it’s been. I’ve committed to only hunting with a longbow this year so hopefully it comes together for me soon. Thanks for sharing your story as it’s given me some reassurance and motivation to stick with it!

Guess I've been in love with traditional archery and any type hunting since I was 6 or 7. My grandfather was three quarter Cherokee and was fluent in both good English and Cherokee. When I was 6 or 7 I asked my dad to make me a bow. He picked out a straight little hickory bush, peeled the bark off and split and tapered it down. From the strings off feed sacks he platted me a string, split a straight pine board for the arrows, tipping them with .22 casings. He made fletching with chicken feathers. They were 4 fletch and wrapped on with string. I've still got the little bow. I didn't know it at the time but, from the pattern of arrow fletching to the shape of the diamond bow nocks, it was a scaled down version of a classic Cherokee D bow. I figure Dad must have made it from the memory of his dad's old bow which Grandad used for cornstalk shooting, a Cherokee archery game that they still compete in.

I too started with a golden eagle compound bow. It had like a 60% letoff lol I just sold it at a local flea market for 20.00 to make room for my newborn baby. I'm gonna miss the memories with that old bow. Anyways..I shot a mathews conquest bow in tournament shooting before switching to traditional then I missed my first 8 deer (shooting over their backs) with a pse stalker 45lb bow. I did some major practicing and with persistence I've harvested 8 straight deer in 2yrs 4 bucks, 4 does. Well jus wanted to share a little about my past to. Great video and keep em coming 👍

I started bow hunting in 98 with the golden eagle that was given to me. Loved that bow. Had one 20 yard fat pin that glowed in the dark for years. I think it may of had some radiation substance in it. Killed more deer with that bow in the Ludington area of Michigan than a crossbow or my outdated Hoyt. Great pic of your first deer and bow. Btw bears are still a freaky concern for me at 46 😱!!!!!!

I'm 43 never hunted really ever. Grew up in rural ky in my area its all compound. I'm not a gun guy and recently got into trad bows. Always wanted to hunt just never did. My dad hunted as a kid but he wasn't into it when I came about. I have one cousin who's a big body builder guy shoots a 90 lb compound he's killed deer elk bear all of it. But if I asked him to show me the ropes he'd just laugh at my stick with a string on it. I'm good at hitting what I want at a target block but I know I'm not ready to hoot ethically at a deer.. hoping things fall in to place for next year. I plan to give any harvest I get to family cause I can't eat deer meat anymore 4 guys busted out my teeth 10 years ago so I find it to tough to consume. I've scouted around the fields and hollers around my home and deer every where and the area is unhunted. Next year I plan to get out there. Can't post pics on Facebook though if my kids find out I killed Bambi they'd disown me lol.

@SamkoTradBow I spend all my free time outdoors. Around my house is rolling woods fields creeks with large farms areas owned by neighbors who already gave me permission to hunt and roam. I live close to Maker's Mark distillery. I've already shot and killed coyotes that aggravate the farmers animals so I know I can get kill shots and get close relatively undetected. I've found deer trails and have a spot in mind. Seen quite a few big bucks tons of does. Researching field dressing and we have a local butcher who does deer. I can't wait!
