Hi! I'm Shaniya but I use the moniker Shanspeare on KZbin. I'm 24, use they/them pronouns, and love all things pop culture! My channel has a lot going on: think Shakespeare meets Baz Luhrmann meets insufferable jester in a relevant but silly costume. I have a bachelor's in English Professional Writing (and basically Literary Analysis--long story) which aids me in the creation of my content. Above all, I wish to emphasize teachability and critical engagement through a fun lens.

The funniest part is that they are not even jobless. They are full time content creators who earn loads of money telling other women why they should leave the money making to their husbands. And did we notice the how they use their sexuality in these videos. I have no doubt that they have a huge male audience. Not very conservative or traditional of them.

My mom is a wannabe trad wife. She fully believes men deserve to be in charge of everything and should have final say. Thing is, in all her relationships she ends up miserable with mean man-child partners who at best are lazy and entitled, and at worse are abusive to her. And every single time she finally has enough and leaves them, and then STILL doesn't see the fault in her way of seeing things and the type of men she's picking. It makes me so sad. And of course she thinks I'm the miserable one because I have zero desire for romance and sex, and don't ever want to get married or even date. I love living alone and being single, and it blows her mind. She's convinced I'm sad and lonely, when she's the one who is both of those things.

Yep! As a former homeschooled kid who experienced abuse at the hands of my over worked and stressed out mother, I can absolutely attest to how vulnerable children are in these types of situations. You have no resources and no outside adult voices to advocate for you, no safe spaces, it’s just a generally scary ass time. To every kid who’s being homeschooled by unhealthy parents: you’ll make it.

I have a hunch a lot of this “traditional wife” crap would fall apart as soon as they are requested to do laundry the traditional way-by hand with a tub and a grate, no washer or dryer. Double so when you take away disposable diapers and they have to wash cloth ones-by hand.
@rtechie
@rtechie 3 ай бұрын
By this "logic" shouldn't feminists hand wash clothes and use cloth diapers because washing machines and disposable diapers were both invented by men? In fact, since virtually everything was invented by men, shouldn't feminists be living naked in the woods gathering berries? Tradwives explicity honor and respect men for creating the comfortable world they now live in, it's bitter feminists that whine about it.

I'm a middle-aged suburbanite from the Upper Midwest and I can assure you that that the earner husband/stay-at-home wife was the norm in the midcentury middle class (it included the working class) when I was a child. My parents both worked and had a more progressive division of labor than their slightly older trad family peers, but I will say this: 90% of the wives had a great deal of power over household matters, to the point of having fairly equitable relationships with their breadwinner husbands.

A friend of mine, a male, is into those Neo-Trad who constantly post women in the age of chivalry, the 1950s, and eastern European femineity etc, alluding to traditional femininity and wives. Some are dog whistles for [WS] movements, which is scary. I hear what you mean about white women owning enslaved people, but I would like to point out that white women had to work for wealthier white women too, there were a lot of women who were in servitude due to economic status. great video with interesting points

I spent some time as a stay at home gf bc me and my partner were trying to see if that worked for us, and I literally became insane. I think that theres a lot of negatives about the lifestyle that is ignored completely by all STHM influencers because it doesn't fit the image they are trying to sell. Maybe I wasn't cut out to be a stay at home partner, but I refuse to believe that at least half of these women do not have severe cabin fever.

My husband and I tried it prior to marriage when we moved across the country, and I absolutely loved it BUT he hated it. Just to be able to afford the bare minimum basics, he was working 14+ hour days 6 days a week and even on his one day off he'd often do various side jobs to bring in extra money or food or I'd do side jobs to bring in whatever was lacking. After a few months we talked about it all and he brought up how he hated that he had zero time to himself, zero time to relax, and although he loved coming home to a clean house and cooked meals, he couldn't enjoy anything because he was too tired and living off of caffeine and nicotine. It also didn't help that I was constantly excited when he came home so I wanted to smother him with affection, which wasn't always an issue but I understand that after a long ass day some times the last thing you want is someone constantly wanting to talk and touch you. And none of that even touched that I dropped my living standards MASSIVELY while being a housewife. I went back to work and now here we are over a decade later with a baby and able to keep our heads above water a hell of a lot easier than when I stayed at home.

You want to know something? I’m a male but I would *NEVER* subjugate my wife to me when I’m married, let alone, make her the lone “homemaker” (especially because I’ve done household chores by myself before and it’s HARD for one person alone to do it) In addition, you know how the side that wants all women to be tradwives (AKA the far-right) is so alarmist about Muslims supposedly “wanting Sharia Law in the USA”? Sharia Law is only the Middle Eastern version of that’s side’s agenda-In this case, in Sharia Law, it’s MANDATED that women are the delegated homemakers and subjugate to their husbands Yes, for people so scared of Sharia Law, they are expert practioners of it!!

Thank you for this in-depth video! I have become a big fan of slow fashion and using natural fibers as much as I can to be environmentally conscious- and because I've been learning about the science behind dyes used on synthetic fabrics, how harmful they can be, and would definitely recommend starting with To Dye For by Alden Wicker to explore that subject- and watched one person's video about their thrifting tips and why they choose natural fibers. After skipping through about 2/3 of the video because they were espousing pseudoscience and not what I think are the real, measurable, demonstrable harms of synthetic clothing, and listened to their thrifting tips, the YT algorithm has now been pushing multiple of their videos about "biblical femininity" all over my feed. As someone who falls into the atheist/vaguely pagan and definitely leftist camps, I'm surprised by how hard the algorithm is leading me into the "tradwife/biblical femininity" rabbit hole. I told KZbin to not suggest videos like that/that creator anymore, but this was a super timely video.

It's crazy how fast the algorithm starts throwing alt-right aligned stuff at you! Almost enough to make you start feeling conspiratorial. I agree. Thank you for differentiating those of us that externally look like trad wives but are very different. I came to be a SAHM via my late onset deafness that made my career future uncertain which made it make sense to start a family and focus there while I figured out my next steps. I have 5 kids ages 5-16, am a Christian, do SAH but am also left leaning, anti capitalist, a gentle parent and do my best to teach my kids about racism, sexism, ableism, etc and the environment. It's frustrating when so much of the content from people who live their lives similarly is so toxic and damaging. It makes it feel even more isolated. Is also so hard to see other moms get sucked in via the crunchy mom to tradwife/antivax/conspiracy theory pipeline.

I’ve never understood the desire to be a housewife. A stay at home mom, yes but never a housewife. Maybe because I don’t care for marriage or “homemaking”. Cooking and cleaning for a partner doesn’t sound enjoyable to me. Waiting on another adult hand and foot sounds miserable. Caring for a child seems cool but doing stuff for an adult that can do it themselves is pointless to me. My first gf was obsessed with the idea of me being a housewife for some reason. Idk she was a pos and didn’t treat me as a person but rather as a prop.

Mormon mom content is the best comparison to trad wife content I've seen on social media. There's so much overlap between the 2. Idk who said it but i read a twitter thread (back in 2020) of someone linking this trend (not aesthetic trend but statistic) of traditional gender roles & all of the bigotry that holds with the current pandemic we r in. They were saying how the ableism that is actively being magnified as we navigate this pandemic is the usual gateway to even more oppressive ideologies being emboldened. (I say emboldened cuz they HAVE always been around, they were just a BIT more taboo due to the activism for inclusion of 2016. "Body positivity" "#MeToo" "#RepresentationMatters" as movements that were only accepted by the mainstream on a surface level that can help them garner goodwill.) But now with the pandemic they can hide their ableism behind "the pursuit of health during the plague". But like ableism leads to an obsession with health & with that comes the need to distinguish who is healthy & with THAT comes the distinction of what is "woman healthy" vs "man healthy" & then THAT leads to "ok well what other gender roles do ppl need to better align with" & its just a nasty snowball effect. The thread even predicted the uptick in "heroin chic" skinny being the new in-trend (aesthetic this time not statistic) cuz with the pandemic raging everyone wants to "prioritize health" but in this fatphobic world, health = skinniness. They even paralleled it with the events that followed the 1918 spanish flu. I wish i had the source for this but yeah ur vid is making all the important connections. Love ur work ! Edited for grammar

15:16 A really funny thing is that this woman pictured on screen is a prominent self proclaimed “trad wife” who is an “ex-lesbian” and boasts about her husband, farm, traditional motherhood and being a “milkmaid” (her own words). What’s so funny about this is that she doesn’t have a husband. She has zero kids. She lives IN the city of Ontario Canada and her “farm” are a couple of flower beds in her backyard with store-bought plants in them. She even uses the same clip of her outside of someone else’s property interacting with livestock to show off her rural lifestyle.

I stayed home after having my second, because I didn't feel I could do a good job with 2 kids and working. We were not well off, so to do this I baked bread, cooked from scratch, used cloth diapers, made the children's clothes, breast fed. I made and sold crafts for pizza money. It was a lonely life. Most of the other women who stayed home had regular activities I could not afford to keep up with, and that was before the religious nuts. The big issue to me is the difficulty of moving out of that. At 40 you have a lot of skills, the kids are nearly grown and no one wants to hire you.

The algorithm did its job for once! this was a video I swear made for me. I'm living a trad wife's lifestyle without being traditional myself. I really liked the trad wife content that was happening on TikTok but deleted the app years ago when it was starting to get really racist and weird. So thankful that my favorite creator is a Jewish woman herself who was speaking out often about how being a homemaker should be for anyone and explicitly stated that queer and people of color belong. But it was really scary seeing the anti-Semitic comments that would pop up on her videos when she would remind everyone she was not Christian. It made me step away from the internet. But it is bonkers what people say to me in person because they look at me and see a white woman married to a man not knowing that I'm queer or that I'm homeschooling because in Florida my son would not be allowed to learn about slavery or that queer people exist. I hadn't thought about it before but you're absolutely right this is like the baby step for people getting radicalized and it sucks. Racism and men ruin everything 😭 because it's super true there is comfort I have in my marriage to my husband that I did not experience when I dated women that out in public in general people will treat me like a human and not throw things at me or whisper slurs. And how how heartbreaking is that, that to live outside of that imagined bubble your norm is not safe😢 TLDR thank you for the care and thoughtfulness you put into this video

I can't say it surprises me that a woman in the US with the last name Vuckovic would be a white supremacist. A huge number of Ex-Yugoslavian diaspora to the US are descendants of chetniks and ustashe (Nazi collaborators during WWII and fascists in their own right, the former from Serbia and later from Croatia) who escaped justice by emigrating to the US, Canada, and several South-American countries. Even her nickname, "Wolfie" is an allusion to her name (Vuckovic translates to "(son) of a wolf." It's more than likely she grew up in a very far right household or at the very least a highly conservative, vocally anti-communist one.

I know a lot of times when people talk about Conservative Christians, they're referring to Evangelicals mostly, but I feel like a lot of these ideas are similar to Anabaptist (Mennonite, Amish, Hutterites) groups in their hatred for modernity, and protection of an in-group. Nothing against those groups on their own, people are allowed to believe what they want, but as a progressive Christian, I can't help but find a lot of those ideas are flawed, as they lack the love and inclusion of Jesus. I like my garden, I like sewing, and I like not having to work a full time job, but I also love sharing the tasks with someone, being able to to contract work, and not putting all the pressure on my husband to provide everything. I have chronic pain so my husband does a lot more around the house, but we see each other as more equal. While I may seem more traditional, we have a sense of equality, balance, and partnership that a lot of people in these circles miss out on.

Thank you for making this video, so well put together and well researched! Also super appreciate the citations and resources at the end, feel like this subject is ridiculously overlooked and needs talking about more. I've worked mostly small retail jobs my whole adult life and finally reached a breaking point, felt like I couldn't do anything else but couldn't stand to be where I was either. At the same time I was lucky enough to marry my best friend who made more in one shift than I ever did in a full pay period. He's been nothing but supportive of my decision to leave work and says my mental health comes first and foremost. He knows I want to find a career I'm passionate about, but I'm also shit at house cleaning and cooking. He doesn't push labels on me, only ever encourages me to be who I am and dive into my passions! And he loves me for it! We're equally messy but know how to combine forces and tidy up whenever necessary (right before we have company usually). I freaking wish I could share this love with others to see how differently their lives might be were they to experience it, or how differently they might see themselves... Unconditional love is a powerful thing. Thank you again for the video! Subscribed n' getting notified.
