Traffic between GDR and FRG without charge, 1972

Since the beginning of the year 1972, the interzone traffic runs without charges. The federal government now pays DM 230 million annually to the GDR.
This applies until 1975 and is part of the Transit Agreement to complete the Four Power Agreement on Berlin. It enters into force with the signing of the four major powers in early summer.
In interviews, citizens comment on the new regulation. The opinions are divided.

Maybe with modern electric motors or engines from newer Smart Cars. But as options, over the default of reproduced originals. Mk1 Capris going back into production would be nice, too, but let's not get carried away.

Ab 1973 war ich dann auch unterwegs München/West-Berlin..auch Ostberlin zur Tante etc mit meinem grünen Käfer... Transit die heutige A9... Was für interessante Zeiten.. alles ganz anders...wer das nicht live erlebt hat, kann sich das heute überhaupt nicht vorstellen...ich erinnere mich ganz genau an alles ☝️🚗

Unless you were US, British or French military in which case it was four-power right of passage and standing orders not to acknowledge East German border guards at all but to deal only with the Soviets.

The 72 transit agreement was hard currency in the bank for the communist regime in Berlin. If they didn’t have West Germany as their banker, they’d have been as poor as Bulgaria was. Detenté was a mostly one-sided proposition. They even sold their own citizens to the West. Enough said. East Germany always had its paw out for West German Deutschmarks.

What's that saying about communism and other people's money? Just the other day I found out about the Pan European Picnic. As the Soviet Union got more hands-off, Hungar stopped bothering to maintain a border fence with Austria. East Germans went on holiday to Hungary and just strolled over the iron curtain.

It was so weird, that the communists celebrated the victory by using capitalist's money. In a book is a photo about an youth event in East Germany, they used equipment from West Germany... Hypocrisy, that is comparable to the climate activists, that uses a gas engine generator to power the sound system.
