I still raise my children the way I was brought up. Ofcourse back then I thought my parents were strict, but when you look around you, you understand why they raised us the way they did. I don't believe in giving a child a phone, and if they are on the tablet, they know to put a timer during the week for an hour and 2 hours for the weekends. I believe Anita should be tried in a regular court. Yes,biologically she is a child and presumed not to be aware of the full consequences of her actions. However, in this case, the presumption has been rebutted as she displayed in a very horrific way that she knew exactly what she was doing. To tamper with evidence and be able to sleep comfortably after snuffing life out of her baby cousin is sickening and very disturbing!!!Her parents need to be taken for serious questioning. Any other sibling of Anita should be taken by the State. Both families (Anita's family and that of the little 8-year old Angel) will never be the same again. She requires placement in a children's rehabilitation facility for mental health assessment, counseling, therapy to acquire appropriate coping skills. Spiritual intervention is also necessary. I can't fathom the pain the grandmother is experiencing, or the heartbreak of the victim's parents. The suffering that child endured before passing on. That family's life will never be the same. Inappropriate content; lack of parental guidance; idle conversation among adults in the presence of children; and the lists goes on, and on are all factors that are affecting our children. The parents of both children must be reeling with shock! Despite the fact that the crime is so serious, we have to temper justice with mercy. Barrister, this story was well narrated with the solemnity it deserves; quite a frightening narrative. The first thing to ask would be who gave the girls an iPhone to share? Secondly, who supervised their use of the phone, including their access to the Internet? When did they have the misunderstanding and over what specifically? Was it that the younger girl got a scoop from the phone about the older girl which must not be made open, for example, an amorous message, etc? So many countless questions. Then the issue of leaving youngsters to sleep all alone in the same room without adults is potentially dangerous. They can even engage in rough plays and pranks that can lead to mishaps. The CCTV was meant to be preventative but nobody monitors it in real time, so the postmortem reviews are just so late. This twelve year-old girl is really not so young as not to realize that her actions could be fatal. The cleanup she did after the act confirmed that she was fully aware of her intent and actions. My people would say "no be today pikin". Even myself as a medical doctor of many years cannot be bold enough to sleep calmly overnight in the same room with a corpse, but that girl's mind was made up. A heart of stone! Now, what could bring about this kind of children? Perhaps, family background, society (especially schools in this case), and the Internet, amongst many other factors. This case would need thorough investigation and meticulous handling geared towards rehabilitation. May God console the bereaved.
