I understand totally! Happened to us a few years ago -- we called our neighbor who was a conservation officer and he thought it was a river otter -- apparently they migrate and even though the river was miles from our home he thought it was possible. It is very heartbreaking indeed. We had to start over too and haven't had a problem since. Many blessings!

@@linannebice6280 I think -- or am guessing --that river otters on the river eat fish and will only go after chickens when they are migrating. I think they only migrate when looking for a mate and they can go quite a ways in a day on land. If they aren't close to water then they will search out other foods like chickens. So I think your chickens should be safe from otters -- minks and weasels on the other hand could be a problem! Blessings!

Its just heartbreaking Tessie, I'm so sorry. We lived fairly close to a creek growing up and often, the weasel would get in and suck the blood out of them all very quietly. You have to hardware cloth everywhere, especially along bottom of walls meeting the floor. I pray your newbies will do greatly!

We always had chickens One year a weasel got in and killed a number of them. It bit them in the neck and drank their blood. Sorry a fox got your chickens.

Oh Tessie, I can't help but be sad. Those hens were special and their antics so amusing. I'm so sorry you had to experience that horrific scene. The babies are adorable and I admire your courage. This happens when expansion displaces wildlife. We have a small ravine behind our backyard and only in the past few years have had coyote's, and our yard is not fenced. Now we have to be so careful with our little Shih Tzu Maltese, Emma, when we take her outside. Happy Mother's Day tomorrow, dear Tessie.

So sorry to hear about your experience. We lost a couple of outdoor cats a few years ago. They started clearing land for development and disrupted the lives of the forest animals. Coyotes got both of them. I felt heartbroken. We didn’t realize the danger until it was too late. Needless to say many cats went missing in the neighborhood before anyone knew what it was. But such are the trials of life and these animals have to eat too. It’s even more sad when they kill just to kill. Happy new adventures with your chickens.😊

Tessie it's obvious the Fox is a conniving animal. My niece had a small flock of Chickens and their dog got into the coop and killed them all. It's something you can't convey in words. Chickens are some of the sweetest animals around. So sorry for your loss. I'm glad you decided to get more. God grant that it never happens again.

Oh dear sweet Tessie I'm so sorry for your great loss. As you teared up talking about your chickens I cried too. I think it's so good that you replaced your chickens. A neighbor's dog had killed all of my brother's turkeys and their babies. It was a huge loss.

Oh Tessie, I[m so sorry. I have had that happen and it is heartbreaking. We live in an area that is no stranger to predators: racoons, coyotes, bob cats, wild dog packs, and more... racoons wiped out my very first batch of chickens many years ago. They did it for sport and not for food. I was devastated. I'm so glad you decided to try again. They are such hard lessons on farm life. It happens.. Oh Tessie...I'm so sorry for your loss. That happened to us several years ago. Our neighbors had got 2 new dogs that were adults already and they came roaming in the middle of the night and killed 29 of my chickens. We set traps the next night and caught the dogs. The neighbors got rid of the dogs. But I was heart broken. Like you, I named all my ladies and gents. One day I will get more chickens. God bless you hun.

No…!!! A dog would do that. We breed dogs and have enclosed goats. We couldn’t believe that they pulled one of them through a little that reached out to them and picked on him for sport I guess. It’s nature. It’s how they interact unfortunately. You did the right thing buying more. Reinforce the fencing with broken bottles on the top. Watch out for loose dogs running around. Look around for new neighbors or new dogs/puppies. Lovely that God showed you the good in the world when you paid for them. Plant garlic and Hollie’s around the coop and their areas. I’d love chickens and fresh eggs everyday but because we breed dogs we know it would be irresponsible of us. Foxes are always the first suspects. In those circumstances you can’t blame the poor foxes for trying to live elsewhere. Luckily you know and can be prepared. So sorry for your loss. Pets are family in my home.🙏🏻❤️

Prayers to you Tessie. So sorry. This is the sad side of homesteading /farming. We have heart breaking stories about losing new born calves, no matter how hard we and the vet tried. One year a state trooper jumper out if his car and ran into the field to help. Such kindness and compassion. I previously owned a private waterfowl bird hatchery, but also had chickens. We were in the woods. Racoon, fox, skunk, weasel, coy dogs, and my favorite...the Fisher Cat, all had designs on my birds. Then there were Red Tail Hawks as well. Of those critters, the weasel will kill for sport AND they can " weasel" their way through a tiny knot hole in the wall. So press your hands on any knot holes and see if they fall out. Plus we have black bear. So I have not build a chicken coop at our woodland farm cottage. Even if it was totally secure, it would bring the bears to the house. I have already had one bear at my back kitchen door last spring. I may ask my brother-in-law to let me build a chicken coop in the dairy barn at some point. So take heart and good for you to decide to get more 🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔 chickens. Your coop is situated in a much safer area than mine would be. Perhaps a motion light? That is what I used to install. I capped the roof of my outside pen with 2" chicken wire and also buried the wire in the ground. All the best ~ Diane

We are thinking of getting chickens or quail soon and had you not shared this I am pretty sure we would have this same experience. I guess I came here on this video,after such a long absence from your fine channel dear Tessie because you're ALWAYS happy and cheerful, that was such a bummer! When I was in ms, I had a pet rabbit, she had 10 bunnies, 9 survived and 1 got squished(the runt?)I loved that doe, where other folks peek and handle the babies when they're blind and still in the nest, I waited until they opened their eyes and came running, jumping up in the hutch, the only day I was able to take them out onto the lawn, was their only day of freedom, the neighbor's dogs got them all, but Momma doe and a little brown buck. So sorry Tessie, we had a dog get our flock a few years back, thankfully some survived and we did as you and your hubby did, we added back with new chicks. It's a very hard loss, ours are pets too and the owner of the do didn't even seem to care and of course never offered restitution either. We now take the stance that if a dog or any other predator is on our property it and the owner get one chance after that it's a bad day for the dog. Again, our sympathies and you'll learn to love your new chicks as much or more. Hugs from MT

So sorry this happened to your sweet chickens! My parents had this problem quite a few years ago and they suspected a mink or possibly a weasel. They can get in through very small cracks. Glad you’re getting a new flock, my parents did as well. Good luck

Hi there, I am so relating to this. We lost 20 plus birds to an owl. I actually caught it in the act. We had a net over our flock and it found a way in during the night and couldn’t get out and it screaming is what woke me. I did set the owl free as it is a life too. Like you, i have started over with ten. Just keep going and keep loving. Bless you, your family and your new flock☺️

Hello Tessie! I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your chickens. I am glad you decided to buy some more of those friendly little critters! It seems odd that after all this time a predator would get into your chicken coop. I think you should invest in one or several of those low cost deer cameras that are sold in hardware stores. You could attach it to your chicken coop or nearby to try and catch whatever is prowling around out in your yard at night-not just for your chickens safety- but for your own as well.
