I love this series about the program Steve has created so that the black bear and people can co-exist. He's not only teaching the bears how to more safely navigate their territory near Mammoth Lakes, he teaches all of us about the nature of the black bear and how to more safely co-exist with them. I appreciate Steve and his love and respect for his bears and his community, and I am so happy to see that he is teaching his son to follow in his footsteps. So I'll share mine with you. ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ In my own opinion, you seem to be in the category of those that see and hear but still allow all that you've seen and heard to just slip right by you. All because you learned his past doesn't fit into your own narrative. Making it completely impossible for yourself to learn or comprehend anything because you've already condemned the man. Did you watch this video completely through? If he's as unforgivable as you make him out to be. Why does the whole community rally around him? Obviously they all know of his past. His "vicious" and "merciless" past was the whole reason the Police Department reached out and hired him. This man came to the conclusion of not destroying those animals all on his OWN. He had zero outside encouragement. Heck, he was hired to track down and kill the bears! He could of continued to do his job the easy way, but he didn't. HE found a way to keep the bears alive! Just knowing he's still choosing the hard challenging non lethal way, all while he knows he can still take the easy road and none would bat an eye at him. Makes him a true hero to the bears, in my opinion.

@@user-wm6bk3in3h Your attitude and vision is lacking. The fact that you can't appreciate his transformation demonstrates your lack of.... well, many things frankly. The bottom line here is in this particular case he needed those fine-tuned hunting skills in order to evolve into what he is today. If he hadn't developed an alpha male role and reputation he never would've found his true calling as a "bear whisperer". As a pesce-pollotarian (aka a pesce-pollovegetarian) I have zero respect for sport hunting. But, in Steve's case it was absolutely vital for him to find his path and true calling. If you lack the ability to appreciate his evolution and true calling that's on you and you alone, for your intolerance and lack of wisdom.

@@keithkniskern277 I agree with you that people today have these strange ideas in their heads that we should leave all animal territory alone... while we all go.....where? I guess they all want to stop immigration too since that would slow down the expansion of settlements into animal territory. I can guarantee most people have not thought past the very surface of the issue and just see a cute fuzzy bear that is displaced and get emotional about it. To put it bluntly, they are very dangerous and they should not be roaming around cities. Period. Its not safe for either humans or the bears. If a bear attacks a human it is almost always killed immediately because it has shown capability of harming people... Its just not smart having that many bears amongst civilians. The bears should be captured and relocated to somewhere they can live wild and away from people. The day when people and bears can live together happily, is the day that we have conditioned bears through generations to become domesticated... that is not good for the species. They need to stay wild, IN THE WILD. We can love them and be amazed at their beauty from a distance while both parties remain safe. As long as people do not encroach on territory that is inhabited by a threatened species... that is where a line must be drawn. There is still massive swaths of land that is as wild as it gets all across north america. That is where wild animals belong, not in civilized settlements. Its one thing if some bears wander in to a rural town from time to time... but purposely trying to live in harmony is just ridiculous. We in the west are muuch too hellbent on forcing vastly different people and cultures to live together in harmony when its just not always possible. The same thing goes for humans and wildlife. Sometimes, certain things and certain ideas just cannot mesh together. That is life. That is what makes the world interesting. We need to stop this kumbaya stuff and get realistic again.... and when we are faced with a scenario where different peoples or species cannot co exist peacefully, then the answer is not for us to shame ourselves with guilt and start hating the western world...

I am saddened. The natural bear (Blondie) has 2 cubs - one dies at birth essentially; the other is killed by a car, Momma mourns the loss of BOTH cubs and goes a bit MAD (Post Partum Depression). HOW DO WE RESPOND? Instead of relocating (against the law - ridiculous), you hunt her down and KILL one of natures TREASURES. She had not HARMED anyone, only broke a man made rule 'Do Not Feed the Bears'. If we chose to inhabit the bears habitat, you expect visits - but NOTE: WE chose to live there, the bears have been there for thousands of years.

I agree with someone's earlier comments. Why did people build where the bears are? You have to remember they're wild animals. When bears aren't afraid of humans? I wouldn't let a child or a pet outside. Our black bears are loaded up and moved to another area with less or no humans around. Our bears don't hibernate. On cool days they go in the den and sleep a couple days or so, then come back out. The only time they're killed is if they attack someone. We've not had any attacks because we don't approach them.

Grew up in black bear country here in Canada. We would get bears in the garden, backyard. My mother handled them just fine. She would yell at them just as you would kids. "You get out of that garden" in that threatening Mom voice. They always looked up at her and ran off into the bush. They knew she meant business. She of course did that from the safety of the back door. We were taught bear safety in elementary school. Taught to respect them, don't feed em, and give them their space. You don't want to create problem bears. Problem bears usually end up destroyed.

It’s amazing how incredibly ignorant humans can be. These are wild animals and the willful ignorance of humans to feed them, get close to them, and treat them like faux pets is astonishing. Steve and the local community has set up rules and regulations that keep the community and the bears safe. Ignorant tourists come in and refuse to follow the rules simply out of arrogance and ignorance. I believe that anyone violating wildlife rules should be cited and/or prosecuted. Their ridiculous actions put the animals in danger and risk the lives of others.

Much admiration for you. I love most animals & get extremely angry for human disrespect 😡 God bless you & all how made this doc possible. And the bears also 💖👵🏻👩‍🌾❣️

I just saw a video of tourists chasing down a sow and cub in Yellowstone just the other day. When they get attacked, they'll blame the bear or the park and try to sue. You're absolutely correct it's ignorance and arrogance. I'd also like to add stupidity. Who hasn't heard of the ramifications of coming between a sow and cub, then to intentionally start chasing them down, literally 5 people running at them until someone with a brain finally stopped them. So incredibly ignorant, arrogant and just plain stupid. Just because they live in Yellowstone, DOES NOT make them people friendly or any less wild.

That's like her in the Adirondacks a mother black bear and 3 tiny cubs were were shot and killed by DEC forest rangers because of human ignorance, actually I can't say ignorance because they were fully educated on what your not supposed to do to prevent this kind of tragedy. People at a local park/camp ground were feeding them, offering peanut butter sandwiches and so forth the get it close to take their picture with it. That mother bear was so use to human hand outs her cubs learned that humans were nothing to fear. After the 3rd episode of mother bear breaking into camps and vehicles for food it along with her cubs were killed. DEC explained to not feed these bears as once they learn they can get food from humans, they can't unlearn that behavior and cannot be relocated and learn to hunt on their own. This was a 1st time mom. Wiped right out because of human greed. To have their picture taken with them? Then they get angry when they are killed? I will never understand that kind of selfishness esp after being warned umpteen times. That poor family didn't have a chance.

I love this community of people living amongst the bears. I love the non stop hard work Steve does to teach the bears who bc a nuisance bc of people being kind to these bears as they are cute until they attack. He uses his expertise to keep the bear in the wild where they belong. I would give anything to live there including selling my home in Canada. I love bears & all animals but give them the respect they deserve. I am used to seeing bears as a child while sleeping where my Mother lived as a child on a farm. As children we slept in the milk house which looked like a cabin. Many times a bear wood bang on the thick wooded door wanting in. Our dog barking would scare it off. They we're some of the best times of my life other than my twin sons now 28! People always need to be educated & reminded to stop feeding these cute bears bc you're signing their death warrant for a picture it's so wrong especially tourists which become a problem. He has a wonderful wife & son that I hope carries on his Dad's work one day. Bears are so extremely smart, I had to laugh when the mother bear cheated by showing her cub looking for a fast meal stealing all the fish that people caught yet hooked onto the dock! They're like young children getting caught with their hands in a cookie jar! I hope Ace isn't shot maybe relocated. Keep up the great work along with the police helping Steve when needed & citizens that follow the rules. Sending love & thanks for protecting our beautiful bears! Sending love from Ontario, 🇨🇦 🐾

I first thought this was a town that bears became aware of until someone reached out to me. There's so many other beautiful places they could build & not where they know bears, wolves & other wildlife need to live to survive! Thank you for commenting as I wouldn't have known otherwise.
