Yeah, same here. I moved here in 2011 and never heard of these schools until I came here. I was completely ignorant of just how cruelly these folks were/are treated. Some of the hateful BS people say about indigenous people sends me over the edge. There are linguists trying to recover indigenous languages, but there is no condoned native-langauge curricuum past grade 2 --no teachers, no credit courses for native kids. Imagine what barriers indigenous people faced (and continue to face) if they were actively abused and taken from their parents as part of a cultual genocide. There has been massive vocabulary loss and many languages have become extinct. It's not like people can just pick up a dictionary or phrase book or sign up for a coures on Berlitz. Great news, they rounded up some old nuns, this is what they said…. Some kids were orphaned, some were suffering abuse from their own families. They taught English because they thought it would give them better opportunities. Lots of poor kids died of tuberculosis Some kids were boisterous, some were quiet, classes were big, discipline was hard They believed they were doing God’s work, today they would do things differently A lot of the records from Kamloops were lost in a big fire in the 1920’s They boys liked playing soccer Some of the kids did very well and went to college, some didn’t There was abuse, there were some mean nuns, and weird priests, but most of the teachers wanted to do good Some of the unmarked (not mass) graves had crosses that disappeared over time
