To say we were excited when we saw a MOOSE on our trail camera is an understatement! They are so beautiful and quite the majestic creature. We played that video on repeat for some time. The real surprise animal just FEELS like its staring right into your soul through the camera knowing we are watching it. It literally gave me shivers. Another majestic creature! We have seen so so so many deer on our cameras over the last several months, I've been taking their beauty for granted. We also have a lot of beavers, they're fun to watch!
I know somebody will ask about the 'Stupid Chicken' reference, so here goes... Their colouring makes them extremely good at being camouflaged, especially during the summer and fall months. They are referred to as "Stupid Chickens" or "Fools Hens" because of their "refusal to flush and their preference for holding tight in a tree." They also make a very unique sound that almost sounds like a helicopter is about to take off. It's a sound you almost feel when you hear it, difficult to describe but when you hear it in the woods you'll know. I swear, Google, "Ruffed Grouse Drumming". They're also tasty, very similar to chicken meat, but smaller in size.
The boys always enjoy going out catching frogs, snakes, skinks and basically anything they can get their hands on quickly enough before making its great escape. We always release, sometimes we keep them in breathable containers for observation for short periods of time before letting them go. We have a collection of National Audobon Society Field Guide Books they like to look through to find the creatures in the books and learn more about them. They're great size books with lots of images and details - highly recommend!
