Renovating an old house is a nightmare. Since 2018 I've been doing it on my own and I know perfectly all the hardships of this process. I don't want to repeat that anytime in the future. Great job and good luck! 👍

I really enjoy this series, i know nothing about carpentry and i am very impressed with how much you can accomplish just putting your mind to it. I'm sure this will be an adventure with an amazing ending and prize. Keep up the spirit!

I've heard that sawdust is great for keeping mice out because they can't really dig tunnels in it. Not sure how much truth there is to that though.
@noorderling5 ай бұрын
I've heard the same thing. Some goes for insects. Also it wicks away moisture and can dry out again. So there are many benefits for using it. It is also very dusty and seemingly does not insulate that good.

You really have your work cut out for you. The biggest cost in a project like this is time and patience. The names of the rooms is a bit different in the type of house you reside in. The house is a TORP, the kitchen is SPISRUMMET / KÖKET, the "dining room" is KAMMAREN and the "living room" is called SALEN. This is a part of the history of these kind of houses, in the middle of nowhere, in now days rural parts of Sweden.
@noorderling5 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for the info, I really appreciate it.

Je moet alles maar als een kans zien. Een kans om het huis goed aan te pakken en helemaal naar je eigen hand te zetten. Uiteindelijk kan je volmondig zeggen dat het jouw huis is geworden.
@GerdLinden5 ай бұрын
In Germany you pay mostly for the property, where it is situated, not for the house. If its situated at lake you can pay very very much - or likely you couldnt afford it. The house dosen´t matter. Its just important that there is a house. Otherwise you can´t build one there beside a lake (as it is in sweden too as far as I know) So you can see it from this side. How much did you pay for it?
@noorderling5 ай бұрын
I think in Sweden it is not very different. My experience is that you pay for location, view , property size and then the house. How much all together is dependent on where it all is situated.

I never knew Sweden was one of the poorest countries. 1906, around the time my great grand parents immigrated to the US.
@noorderling6 ай бұрын
@@cyh6092 I've read somewhere that 1,2 miljon Swedes left the country to go to the US around that time to escape poverty in the homeland. Maybe they did some work on my house before they left! Wouldn't that be a great story!

Do you know why the old roof has been leaking in many years? It's because it was nailed with "special" nails with a rubber a seal that should tighten the nail hole. By years of expansion and crimping from the metal roof by the heat of the sun the nails worked themselves loose and water run under the rubber seal straight into the wood. The new screws don't have that issue. The pre-owner did know and should have told you about the walls and not covered it with paint. Beware that rotten wood is paradise for those big ants/ Hästmyror and will eat up all beams from the inside.
@noorderling6 ай бұрын
That could certainly be the cause of the problem. The plans is to get all the rotten wood out of the house before too long to prevent insects from getting in it.

The papers are from the same year, because that's when they "insulated" that wall.
@noorderling6 ай бұрын
@@olsa76 that is also what my wife said 🙂 But I guess they were too poor for a subscription to the newspaper. So I wonder how they got them. And if so, when. But maybe it is not that complicated and they did have a subscription.

@@noorderling I guess they could get like week-old newspapers for free maybe..
@wertywerrtyson55295 ай бұрын
I don’t think it was that uncommon to have the newspaper back then. From what information I can find newspapers become common in the second half of the 19th century due to more efficient printing and abundance of paper. It was also your only source of news before radio existed so most people would have paid to get the newspaper back then. Also 1906 was a few decades after the really bad times in the mid 19th century. People were staring to become richer even if they still were poor by modern standards of course.

It was common to move these “torps” after changes to the land were made or a family needed a new home (like a soldier coming back from war, a farm worker starting a family or one of the children starting a new family). After the logs were moved to the new foundation insulation and wind barriers would be added so the newspapers coming from the same year is quite common. Also the year for these torps are often set to 1910 even though they could be 1-200 years older because there weren’t any records of when the initially were built (and also if you move and rebuild it does it count as a new building?). I think the majority of our older houses are “built in 1910” according to the records. Our torp was initially built in the 1730:s but has been rebuilt a few times since then (according to the maps and the stories about who lived there we’ve uncovered) and the year in the records is 1910.
