I’m so inspired by JR’s level of patience and ability to remain level-headed when training horses!! Loading horses in trailers can get really ugly very quickly, I’ve witnessed it myself, so kudos JR! You are truly a great trainer when you choose not to use force, but rather patient persuasion, encouragement and positive reinforcement! ❤️

I’m sure your mom appreciates you so much Jr! Great job helping Fancy’s fear and explaining to us non horse people with a positive way to help a horse overcome their fear. God Bless ☺️💜 As a momma of 3 children, 2 boys and a girl, I pray that as I get older my sons (especially) will be willing to help me without complaint or making me feel like a burden. I know my girl will ☺️ We’ve got some pretty amazing children we’re so proud of. To see their training come full circle would be such a blessing.

I also had a young horse that wouldn't go in until i did. He trusted me if i went first! Very dangerous doing that but the horse didn't rush me and i climbed out a window. He would follow me anywhere but i had to be willing to lead. Took about an hour before i went in the trailor and he followed right away.

It was a treat to watch you work so effectively with her while maintaining calm to the point where you were responding to her body language - noticing where she was looking - it was wonderful. Fancy is named well, isn't she, she's a bit of a diva - I wonder if she has pretty privilege and has gotten away with things because she's a beautiful horse 😊

JR is amazing with horses....one lesson & that stubborn, want-her-way mare knew who was boss & accepted his way. What was a surprise is how his mom chose this wayward mare over all JR's sweet tempered mares to be her riding choice! Pretty is as pretty does...this one is showy, but wants to be boss! Take care out there!
@marge2548 Жыл бұрын
Goodness, the patience you needed for this horse! 😅 Edit: This video also shows how important it is to be able to take the time one needs for lectures like that in order to not mess things up. Back when I was younger and still lived in the countryside, being around horses more often, every time a horse would not want to get into the trailer (and over here they mainly use the small ones), all were in a hurry, everything had to take place quickly, and most of the time, it was a horrible experience for both horses and most probably also all people involved. Glad to learn today, almost 40 years later, how to avoid it. Even though I certainly will never own a horse.

That was really interesting. I have only ever saw someone hooking the lead rope inside and pulling on it just like how you had mentioned and it didn’t look like the horse had a good experience in that video. This made so much sense, even if it would have appeared to look mean to some people, it was pressure and release. The horse ended up with a positive experience and now mom can use the smaller trailer. ❤❤
@chrismack5908 Жыл бұрын
First, JR, great technique to loading. Second, one of my horses, Michael, would casually walk up to the trailer but not load until I would find a small twig and tell him I'd use it if he didn't load, which he would. It turned into a loading ritual each time we we'd load him. 😊

This is a stubborn no/yes/no situation. The flag is not abuse. Mare knows what is requested just being stubborn. Yes relief is inside takes a lot of patience to win this. A horse loaded so many times it’s just a different trailer. You do not want to have load up be associated with anger or meanness. He is using all the right signals, requests, reinforce request and relief. Amazing stubbornness.

Excellent methods JR, and you achieved the desired results in a relatively short time. Our horses were carted in dads truck when we were young, he made a horsebox to fit the truck deck which could carry up to 5 horses. It was a simple matter of backing up to a suitable bank to load etc. unfortunately the truck broke down on the way home once and friends who had space in their float (trailers) offered to take me and my horse home. Well.......what a shambles, she’d never had to walk up a ramp into an enclosed area before and everyone was yelling and dragging her and even whacking her until I started bawling and said I’d ride her the rest of the way home, which I did. The poor darling, it was a dreadful experience for her. 😢 I just love your videos, thankyou so much. ❤

Had more issues with step up trailers. Switched to ramped doors and made a huge difference. Visual perception is so different for a horse. Steve Young Horsemansip deals a lot with trailer loading issues and uses pressure-and-release techniques religiously.

@@donnacourtenay7656wow, just wow!🙄 Just like JR said, there are different ways you could do this. The OP was just commenting on another discipline technique that could also get the job done. I don’t know about you, but I learn different things from different people. They weren’t being rude or disrespectful.
@G.G.999 Жыл бұрын
@donnacourtenay7656 Sounds like you don't believe in options in finding horse problem solving issues. ALL EFFECTIVE HORSE PEOPLE HAVE HAD TEACHERS, otherwise there would be no horse behavior advancement in history. I made NO CRITICISM regarding Homestead Horsemanship's method of trailer loading. Each trailer is different, and each horse is different. Pressure and release seems to be the best method for most horses, and that's what was used here, so it was a compliment. Some people's DNA is just geared toward the negative in life, instead of being open to all possibilities (God's vast possibilities).
