Trailer training
with Taylor and Ellis
Trailering is a crucial skill for any horse.
And although Ellis has been in trailers before, doesn't mean that he will get on a new trailer in a new place.
Trailering is a must in the sports of endurance.
We practiced before our first outing, so we won't have any problems when we actually need to go some place.
I have a European two horse straight load bumper pull. It's lightweight and small. Perfect practice trailer.
A horse that loads into my Brenderup, loads into any trailer.
We started by having Ellis eat some hay whilst tied to the trailer. Then he checked out the trailer inside trough the escape door. He was brought to the back and got to check out the ramp. He stepped on and wasn't too sure. So we backed him out and repeated.
Finally he stepped all the way in. That was the time to bring in the Expert Queen of trailering - my Egyptian mare Alfano Maraqa. As an experienced endurance horse, she is a great teacher.
Ellis watched her walk on. Then unloaded her, kept her close and Ellis walked in, time to shut the butt bar for the first time. Maraqa walked on next to him, so he didn't worry at all. We were able to close the trailer up and take the trailer for a drive.
No rope halters, whips, chains or other gadgets were needed.
