Land Rover Diff Overhaul - Pinion Bearing Preload Shims, Crown Wheel Mounting and Bearing fitting

In this episode we work out what is involved when setting the bearing preload. Shims are required and how it is set up is not 100% mathematical. We continue to mount the crown wheel and fit bearings to the planetary gear housing.

Quick question, I have a Salisbury rear diff On my Td5 100, It seems like when I let the clutch out in first as im pulling off the prop almost looks like its sticking a creates a shuddering in the jeep, What would you say this could potentially be either diff & transfer bearings could solve the problem or the Diff needs refurbishment? I really wouldn't know how to do what you're doing when it comes to preloading shims or working out the millimetres but also dont want to go out and spend £2,000 on a refurbed Salisbury rear diff if its just as easy as slipping out the bearings and putting new ones in? @Trailerfitter's Toolbox Videos

everything is so small... i envy the ease of this. im rebuilding an upgraded axle for my truck with a detroit. those ring gear bolts are 24mm, each one to 238Nm torque... and the pinion nut is 1 7/8" pulling that in and out to change shimms SUCKS

the linkage is siezed where it connects to the box. It needs working free

Just a quick question, I just checked on-line at Brookwells Website and the Pinion Pre-Load Shims you have listed in the video ( all 20 or so FTC3869 to FTC3896). They appears to be none listed on their site. I currently have two Series 2A 109 Differentials to work on. I have replaced ALL the bearings and I cannot get the 90 ft-lbs of torque, the bearing binds up. I used the same spacers that came out but no luck. I have been reading that the bearings are never the same so they race can be .020" different easily. So that is my problem, but where else can I purchase these shims? So again, when I install everything and just a small amount of torque, all is good. Any good advice is greatly appreciated!

a beam defelction torque wrench will easily register 3nm

If you mean the prop shaft centre bearings then yes they are changeable.
