When I was a kid and would see a horse trailer on the road I'd make my parents catch up to it so I could see if there were horses inside. I hated it when they were empty. I'm 50 now and still have to catch those trailers for a peek, even though I'm surrounded by horses at home. 💖

A man who hauled horses all his life put my horses loose in a long gooseneck stock trailet. It was great. Prior to this, my horse was very tense. He had been in two road accidents, so he had a right to be worried. I think he liked being able to see thru the slats. I absolutely dreaded moving him until he went loose.

For about 4 years we’d only trailer once a year to go to fair. Never had an issue in the stock trailer. Last year we were able to buy our own stock trailer so we could start going to public trails. First time in, I tied my mare in, then she panicked and tore the metal tie loop thing off the wall of the trailer (luckily no serious injuries occurred). We’ve been slowly working up to her having trailer confidence again. After getting a fair amount of bad advice from other people, it’s great to hear you say many of the things I’ve figured out on my own during this process. Thank you!

Great ideas. However, the last time I hauled a horse loose with nothing on him he fell & ended up with a dislocated hip. Now I have a nice line-bred Deck Of Stars stallion that is a pasture ornament. So that particular idea ppl need to be VERY careful with the speed of the drive & how turns are made.

Ryan, Great pointers. How about loading two horses? First horse…got it. Understand completely why not to tie a horse until divider closed. But the second horse in a slant load like you used in the video has no divider, only the doors. Being short, have tried to tie from outside standing on wheel-well rim. Not particularly safe. What is your suggestion for tying that second horse with only the doors to keep the horse in?Thank you…

Some excellent points here. Yes I have seen a YT video of a horse coming out a window like that and it's incredibly scary. The horse was partway out for a long time, before finally getting all at the way out unhurt (plenty of "helpers" as you can imagine). It was so hard to watch; you forget to breathe. I myself wouldn't leave an inexperienced horse loose in such a large space. Unless the practice ride was pretty short. Yes, horses can usually balance themselves, but it's very hard work actually. Tiring for the muscles. A stall wall or divider gives them something to lean on -- maybe not for long periods at a time, but for rest here and there. It's why longer hauls should include occasional stops (even if the humans don't need to stop), so that the horse can rest. Horses don't need to get out and stretch their legs. They just need some relief from the constant movement. That said, I live in NM and it's not unusual to see two or three saddled horses loose in a stock trailer (tied, but no dividers) going down the highway, and I'm sure they're fine. No doubt experienced ranch horses that aren't being hauled huge long distances.

Most of the time when it happens, it does not end well.
@bippy2012 жыл бұрын
That’s fair! It definitely depends on the context. If you’re like me, and only trailer occasionally for relatively short amounts of time, the stock trailer shouldn’t cause issues. But say a professional barrel racer, who’s on the road for hours or days at a time - all the time - would want to do as much as possible to keep the horse extra comfortable. I’ve seen people trailer their tacked up horses too. I worry about tack getting caught on something and breaking. Plus the horse panicking because of it (or a panic causing the snag).

Ryan, I have a 2-horse slant and would love to see you extend this sort of video to include how to deal with the second horse (as they would have to be tied in as there is no partition, right?) as well as which door you would shut first so the last horse to load wouldn't panic (?) knowing it was getting shut in. Make sense? Anyway, excellent video again!

I just got a horse who loads like a dream, but will try to kill you getting out. I have a really big trail ride and parade coming up that I need her for. I just don't know how to get her out, all of my horses are great in trailers except for her. I also don't wanna rush her into something she doesn't want to do, but I also want her to learn.
@zaralunden32029 ай бұрын
Sometimes a horse is reluctant to follow a person onto a trailer because it's doesn't want to step on it's owner. It needs to see a space large enough to walk in to. I think it is Always best to train the horse to walk in first. Give it an open space to walk in to.

Thank you for the video. Why should a horse back out of a trailer? One of my mares turns around and hops out and everyone says it is wrong.
@ryanrosehorsemanship3 жыл бұрын
It’s usually a little safer for them to back out and there a little less likely to get in the habit of coming out before being asked to come out.
@epona91663 жыл бұрын
I think it’s safer for the horse to be able to turn around and go out forwards. They’re less likely to injure a leg getting out and it’s my humble opinion that having to back out - which is very awkward unless there’s a ramp - is a reason they hate getting in. That said, it’s NOT safer for the human unless the horse has been trained to turn around slowly and wait until they’ve been invited to come forward. It’s not hard to do but it’s important. Both my horses turn quietly and slowly and my experience is that once they’re turned and can see out the back, they’re happy to just stand and look out, and when I ask them to step out they are totally calm. Bottom line I think how the horse gets in and out the most safely depends on whether there’s a nice solid ramp and whether the back of the trailer is completely open. Ryan’s trailer is only half open bc of the tack area on the left. So it would be less safe to be inside w a horse that wants to turn around.

I tried to find this video on Patreon but couldn’t find it. My question is my 16 year old gelding who I’ve had for 3 years paws constantly in the trailer and one time he was stomping all 4 feet! I removed the slant that holds him in and just let him be loose. It seems to be working. I tie him in with a shirt bungee cord with a break away halter. The bungee has an easy release as well. It this unsafe for him? Should I reintroduce the slant?
