Family Stranded In A Flash Flood

We got a call for a vehicle that got caught in a flash flood in Cathedral Valley in Capitol Reef State Park. Shawn and I went in with Trailmater to get the vehicle and cleanup where the family had camped while they waited for rescue. We got to the vehicle and found it was fairly buried on the passenger side but luckily not high enough to get water in the engine. However the alternator was dead from being submerged. So to get the vehicle to run long enough to help get it out we had to run our welding leads and jumper cables out to reach. We got it out and swapped in one of Trailmater's batteries to get it to drive for awhile. With so many electronics in new vehicles and the alternator not working it only made it a few miles. We decided to just pull it back to the trailer. Unfortunately this vehicle was a rental and being as it spent a few days half submerged we knew it was totaled so we weren't worried about damaging anything by pulling it. If ANYONE was to drive the decoy gasoline fuel tanker from the 'Mad Max Film desert refinery' as a decoy to allow the gentle people to escape (with all due respect to young Mel Gibson) I WOULD CHOOSE RORY. Real 'Road Warrier' experience. AND, with Mike and Shawn riding as gunners it would be quite entertaining to see the gasoline powered weapons they could deploy. Since Mad Max was a Post-Apocalyptic movie I imagine the knowledge of Napalm was available to them. Would have made short work of the 'Smokers' attack vehicles. LOL As a Vietnam War era mental survivor, I remember to this day 'Napalm in the Morning'. (Apocalypse Now, The Movie)

The newer the vehicle the more power it needs just to survive. Not surprised the battery didn't last long. Trail Mater putting in the work.

Exactly. In the old days of carburetors you could drive pretty far on just the battery. It was only really running the ignition coil. With everything electronic now it's just not possible. Also when driving offroad that Armada has a traction control system that will use the ABS pump to brake the slipping wheel. That'll suck some energy out of the battery, especially in that mud.

LoL, but likely correct. A rental agency years ago had a Chevy blazer for me to use knowing that it was going to be in Death Valley for a month. I told then it wasn't a reliable in that location and weather "heat" of summer. About a week into that they were sending out a rollback and a replacement rental. Over heated radiator failed. I told them any other vehicle but a Chevy SUV. It wasn't even being used like that.

Utilizing the buddy system has been said on this channel as well as on other off-road/outdoor channels. Another tip learned from my scouting days is to check in at a local ranger station for current trail conditions or weather alerts. Another good source is the local jeep or ATV rental companies. Nice work Rory and Shawn for getting that vehicle out of a muddy mess.

Man that Armada was in deep trouble after the flash flood. The battery was dead, the alternator was dead, and it killed Mater's extra battery so they had to tow him out. Definitely got an electrical issue of some sort but they got em out with Trail Mater! Good job Rory and Shawn!
