Gappie Al Kebabi As I understand, the correct procedure is to phone the railway operator to seek safe permission to cross, then close both gates and phone the operator back, letting him know that you have crossed safely. Trains cannot always be heard, especially if it's a windy day, and also if the track is even slightly curved, cannot always be seen clearly from both sides of the track. I believe that the phone may also be used for emergency use if the line became blocked by fallen trees or may be stray animals.

Just happened a few months ago in Waterloo, IL USA. Almost exactly as this happened, but there wasnt a gate or crossing bars since the tracks went through the middle of a field, and there were two sets of train tracks. As soon as one train had passed, and the farm boy in his tractor started to go over the tracks but was hit by a second train on the second track. He didn't see it as it was hidden by the first train. I was on scene as his parents arrived, as you could imagine they were screaming and begging to God. He was so mangled and broken and unidentifiable, they refused to let the parents see him for a while. Lesson- always check for trains, and if there are two sets of tracks, wait till the train has completely passed and give you a good view down the tracks both ways. You dont want your last moments to be terror watching a train barrel towards you knowing you cant do anything about it all to save a few minutes of travel time.

In the video the user asks for permission to cross then opens the gate when the expected way would be to open the gates first by foot , checking for trains then asking the signaller for permission. The signaller will ask what type of vehicle is crossing and how long they require to cross. If there is time before the next train permission will be given. If there is not enough time the caller is expected to call back after the train has passed.
@TimothyEBaldwin13 жыл бұрын
Some railway workers were also breaking rules, as the farm boss failed to inform the signaller that the crossing was clear, no trains should allowed to proceed except under caution until the crossing was examined, at which point the gates should have been closed.
@Arabhacks13 жыл бұрын
This is a low budget safety film, very well done with no special effects. In the US there are no manual gates, in fact on private crossings there is not even a warning. As far as signaling the whatever, we have no phones at crossings, we are lucky to have crossing signals!

@AndrewNeilClarkson Again, my experience is from BR days but that would apply to AOCR, AOCL, AHB etc. not occupation crossings, farm crossings etc. Where there is no confirmatory system then an inherently unsafe mode of operation is in place and an accident is guaranteed over time. We used to have a book for such crossings and make an entry for each use. The signalman also failed to confirm whether or not the vehicle was in that class of vehicle (long/slow).

The reason it broke up like that, was because of the way the transmission castings make up the rear frame. Tractors usually are meant to be split there for repairs to be made.

@xaiano7947 жыл бұрын
TheTomco11 You obviously need to retake your driving test - The road traffic act (1988) section 36 clearly states that what the land rover driver did was against the law, and a contributing factor in the forthcoming incident.
@TheTomco117 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying he wasn't in the wrong, or that he wasn't breaking the law. Just that the tractor was aware it was a working crossing and almost phoned but didn't because he was in a rush. In this situation the tractor is responsible for the accident, despite the land rover being in the wrong
@xaiano7947 жыл бұрын
TheTomco11 That's a bit like saying that it isn't the guy who provided the gun being responsible for the murder - he would have had to get out if the gates had been closed. He would have had to have been extremely idle not to phone when he was out anyway - that's how the crossing is designed to be used.
@xfileswilly12 жыл бұрын
In Sussex a system has been put in place to allow cars, vans, tractor (without trailer) to use user worked crossings without stopping trains if the user can cross withing a specified time limit, as mentioned the trains are not stopped for this type of movement as it causes delay and the user is only expected to call back if they experience any problem on the crossing.
@Mrtrainfreak1212 жыл бұрын
a pretty interesting PIF for railway crossings safety but i noticed a few errors. at around 4:37 when the collision occurs you can see the tractor being push at a extremly fast pace by the train and its made with adobe flash. also not all the models are the same in this, they differ alot when you look closely.

Unless regulations have been severely relaxed since my days (which is doubtful) this should not have happened. The driver would have been given a unique sequence number which he would have had to report to the signalman when he was clear. Failing to receive confirmation that the crossing was clear, the signalman would have to stop trains and tell them to approach the crossing with caution being prepared to stop short of any obstruction.
@dwightstewart718110 жыл бұрын
Instead of fences, gates, phones, and other such stuff, why isn’t that railroad crossing designed better? Cutting trees, shrubbery, and similar further back from the tracks to allow better visibility up & down the tracks would probably work far better. Same with relocating fences, buildings, and similar further back from the tracks.

This is a very great way of showing way people need to close the gates and all, but over here in the USA we have automatic gates that activate when a train is near. They have flashing ref lights and dinging bells ad they have a arm (gate) that comes down and blocks the person from going in front of the train
@jaycee3302 жыл бұрын

Nice video - good point to get across. There are many "unprotected" crossing as railroads go through fields and forests - it would simply be prohibitive to install gates everywhere and some areas (mid-field) do not have electricity (or solar panel charging systems). Good lesson in common sense, thank you for producing this video, it also applies to other farm accident potentials, Ciao, L
@madmax20076912 жыл бұрын
@AndrewNeilClarkson Oh yes, the video makers might also have chosen the camera angle carefully to avoid revealing that this crossing was protected by semaphore stop signal(s) (not marked out of use) which meant that a safe system of working the crossing could be implemented by requesting confirmation the crossing was clear and the gates closed and on failure to receive information cautioning the next train. This is a failure of a lax system not the farm worker

Wrong, if you are referring to the Nevada Amtrak train that was hit by a tractor-trailer on June 24, 2011. The truck driver skidded 340 feet, trying to stop. It's clear from the video shot after the crash that the lights / gates were NOT working at the time of the crash. Also, news media has reports: lights / gates malfunctioning BEFORE the June 24th crash and AFTER the crash. That should indicate to you that the warning devices were not working properly and that's what caused the crash.

3:00 The farmer did not call the signaller at the other end. Why didn't he put a block on the railway line, send out a general stop for good measure and then send Network Rail staff to close the gates? That is what I would do, clearly the signaller, farmer and farm hand were all at fault for this! I hope that if this were real the farmer and signaller find themselves serving a substantial sentence behind bars.

A vehicle as big as that tractor should have derailed that train as fast as it was going, or at least fucked up the cab heavily and probably would have killed the railway operator. It also plays into the angle the tractor was at compared to the train, which was skewed approaching the train. It’s also regarding the design of the cab of the train, which is flat faced and probably thus would have been crushed by the tractor, as is the case in at least one incident between a local tram and a tractor. All things aside, this video does get the point across that it is trying to, so good job
