My Great Grandfather was a fireman on the New York Central Railroad for 40 years, from wood, to coal, to diesel. As a member of his family I was able to ride for free anywhere the line went. I have always loved trains, and this is a particularly beautiful ride. Thank you so much!

Those tunnel walls look scary. Is there a possibility that the moving trains's vibration will cause a stone chip to dislodge and hit a high speed train? Guess the engineers would have thought about it. Still looks scary ASF. Awesome content BTW! Thanks.

Guten tag :D I'm so glad you liked the video :D And here are some answers for your questions :) Yes, it is a cargo ship you see at Stanghelle, and that is indeed a fjord, Veafjord. the constructions you see to the right after Vaksdal is a mill with grain silos. The little town of Vaksdal was built around the the factory who harness the power from the river for it's productions. The companies that are there today is Møllerens and Felleskjøpet.

I find it really interesting that there are densely populated areas in Australia that apparently don't have enough people for a regular train service, and yet Norway has trains that run through sparse beautiful scenery so empty that the people on the train must be the only humans for kilometres around. I wish Australia was more like Norway.
@hcrun
@hcrun 6 жыл бұрын
Australian lines have to cover a much larger distance so the cost per km is greater. Area of Norway = 386,000 sq. km. Area of Australia = 7.7 million sq. kms.
@zoqaeski
@zoqaeski 6 жыл бұрын
@@hcrun I think that's a straw-man argument. The overwhelming majority of Australia's population lives within 50-100 km of the east coast. The are large parts of NSW, Victoria, and south-east Queensland that are far more densely populated than Norway, and yet we don't generally have frequent regional train services. There should be at least two-hourly regional rail services up-and-down the east coast, and the main line between Sydney and Melbourne needs to be upgraded to allow an average speed of 150-200 km/h. I don't think we can justify high speed rail infrastructure (>250-300 km/h), and I'm wary that that would simply make Sydney and Melbourne sprawl even more, but fast, frequent regional rail is definitely worth developing.

It's interesting to me that you sound your horn quite a distance from the crossing. So different than the way it's done here in the US.
@alejandrayalanbowman367
@alejandrayalanbowman367 6 жыл бұрын
There are signs that say when the horn should be sounded - usually a divided yellow/orange diamond (see 4.34). The earliness is to give time for anyone/thing to get clear of the crossing and,of course, will depend on the line-speed. In the US, horn usage is excessive and very irritating to anyone within a mile or so of the line, to the point that it is so much and so common that it is often ignored,
@hcrun
@hcrun 6 жыл бұрын
Norway is similar to us.....here in Australia there is usually one blast of the horn as the train approaches a level-crossing. That's all. No overkill, as in the USA (long-long-short-long over and over and over).

The massive tunnel between Evanger and Dale never ceases to astonish me. @@RailCowGirl Apparently, "I" was flashing because the signal that I thought was, upon a second look, clearly was not. You are correct in that crew are not allowed to film on U.S. railroads. One can still make one if riding a commuter train in push mode with a cab car and the engineer leaves the door open though. I had that opportunity once but I stuck to photos because I was on my way to the state railroad museum and didn't want to use all my battery up before I got there. In the end, it didn't matter because I got a late start and the museum, being a government facility, was already closed.

A tech. question ....... Do either the El 18s or the Flirts have a backup generator or reserve batteries to allow movement or heating if the mainline power went down ?
@RailCowGirl

The FLIRT has for emergency lighting. The EL28 does not. So when the main power goes, the heat goes.

Not dressing for conditions on the mountain is a stupid idea if you go either by car or train ;) you have to be prepared. The road can be closed at any time, and you might be stuck up there for hours :)

@@RailCowGirl In 1952, Southern Pacific's passenger streamliner " City of San Francisco " became trapped in snowdrifts for six DAYS. ( Temp: -28C, Winds of nearly 150 KPH ! )

That is INSANE! I can assure you that wouldn't happen here. :) There are routines making sure that if a train breaks down on the mountain, it does not take long before someone can come and evacuate the passengers. That train would be powered be diesel in case of catenary problems :)

Hi Im not trying to offend in any way with this question just out of genuine curiosity Why do you watch this?

It's a good question. I find the videos very relaxing, and they put me in a privileged position right up front. They're also very interesting with the signs and whatnot. Added bonus : one of my new kittens also finds it fascinating and is pawing the monitor as the landscape goes by 👍😂🐈

Rookie Phantom - I watch because I love trains and have since I was a little kid. These videos offer a perspective one can never achieve unless you're a train driver.

As a former railwayman, it is interesting to see other rail lines/networks especially if they are in different countries and under different operating conditions.

I love trains and have since I was a child. I find railroads in Europe interesting as I live in the US. Yes, I do watch videos of US railroads. This is a great way to compare notes and see what trains and railroads in other parts of the world are like. I find HCG's videos very enjoyable and relaxing to watch. I have watched her videos several times and never get tired of watching them. Each time I watch a video I've seen before, I see stuff I haven't seen before.

I think a 2.3GHz 18-core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.3GHz iMac Pro would be great for editing the videos.

But a iMac Pro with those specs would be mouth watering beyond everything 😂 problem is AMD graphics card. I’d rather go for nVidia as it has much better support in Adobe Premiere through Cuda :)

I am sure you could configure a Windows PC with similar specs but the 5K display sure it nice (I have one on my older iMac). Of course you could always learn how to use Final Cut Pro on the Mac :) . Not sure you would need CUDA if you have 18 cores of sever grade processors :D
