Those tunnel walls look scary. Is there a possibility that the moving trains's vibration will cause a stone chip to dislodge and hit a high speed train? Guess the engineers would have thought about it. Still looks scary ASF. Awesome content BTW! Thanks.

The max speed on the FLIRT is 200km/h the max line speed Bergen - Voss - Myrdal is 130km/h, but that is only. Max Speed between Hallingskeid - Finse - Haugastøl is 160km/h. In the Intercity Triangle, there are several places where you can run at 200 and 210km/h :)

I find it really interesting that there are densely populated areas in Australia that apparently don't have enough people for a regular train service, and yet Norway has trains that run through sparse beautiful scenery so empty that the people on the train must be the only humans for kilometres around. I wish Australia was more like Norway.
@hcrun6 жыл бұрын
Australian lines have to cover a much larger distance so the cost per km is greater. Area of Norway = 386,000 sq. km. Area of Australia = 7.7 million sq. kms.
@zoqaeski6 жыл бұрын
@@hcrun I think that's a straw-man argument. The overwhelming majority of Australia's population lives within 50-100 km of the east coast. The are large parts of NSW, Victoria, and south-east Queensland that are far more densely populated than Norway, and yet we don't generally have frequent regional train services. There should be at least two-hourly regional rail services up-and-down the east coast, and the main line between Sydney and Melbourne needs to be upgraded to allow an average speed of 150-200 km/h. I don't think we can justify high speed rail infrastructure (>250-300 km/h), and I'm wary that that would simply make Sydney and Melbourne sprawl even more, but fast, frequent regional rail is definitely worth developing.

Thanks for another great video, HCG. I never miss them! I've always wondered - how much clearance is there between the train and the wall of the tunnel? It looks like a tight fit!

It's interesting to me that you sound your horn quite a distance from the crossing. So different than the way it's done here in the US.
@alejandrayalanbowman3676 жыл бұрын
There are signs that say when the horn should be sounded - usually a divided yellow/orange diamond (see 4.34). The earliness is to give time for anyone/thing to get clear of the crossing and,of course, will depend on the line-speed. In the US, horn usage is excessive and very irritating to anyone within a mile or so of the line, to the point that it is so much and so common that it is often ignored,
@hcrun6 жыл бұрын
Norway is similar to us.....here in Australia there is usually one blast of the horn as the train approaches a level-crossing. That's all. No overkill, as in the USA (long-long-short-long over and over and over).

The massive tunnel between Evanger and Dale never ceases to astonish me. Double flashing greens? Where did you see that? :D I don't think they're allowed to film at all in the US. :/
@Narpets21126 жыл бұрын
@@RailCowGirl Apparently, "I" was flashing because the signal that I thought was, upon a second look, clearly was not. You are correct in that crew are not allowed to film on U.S. railroads. One can still make one if riding a commuter train in push mode with a cab car and the engineer leaves the door open though. I had that opportunity once but I stuck to photos because I was on my way to the state railroad museum and didn't want to use all my battery up before I got there. In the end, it didn't matter because I got a late start and the museum, being a government facility, was already closed.

How do stops on demand work? Are there pushbuttons of sort on the carriages and in the stations?
