To everyone calling this lady stupid for asking "why did it derail?", come on. She's obviously asking for the audience. A lot of people who don't know anything about trains have no real understanding of how trains really work or the crazy physics involved with something with that kind of mass moving at the speeds that trains can reach.

You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward-reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. The"game"is on steam it's called Train Simulator. My point was that he had a nice setup the I would like to have. I never said he wasn't official. Anybody that had the money can buy those exact controls, map the controls to the game and act like you are controlling a train IRL.

What I don't get is how the instructor put the throttle at idle, then the train brake in emergency then the independent full, and the dynamic brake on. Just throw it in emergency. The throttle will automatically be cut, no dynamic and the independent is almost useless.
@pkranz937
@pkranz937 8 жыл бұрын
Most newer AC units have a DB holding feature, where you keep the dynos, but you have to bail to keep the independent from setting up. Also, the "expert" didn't throw Freddy when he dumped it. Some units now do that automatically, though.

I meant no Dynamic as you don't have to place the throttle lever in Dynamic the blended braking will automatically do that.
@GEES44DC
@GEES44DC 8 жыл бұрын
Freight locomotives do not have blended braking. If you are not in dynamic braking at the time of the emergency application, you're not getting any dynamic braking for the stop. The independent has to be bailed completely off if you're stretched and bailed off down to a reasonable pressure if the train is bunched when the train goes into emergency. Newer engines have a dynamic brake/independent interlock where the computer should prevent the independent brake from applying when the train is in dynamic braking.

Hmmm. Typical news media sensationalism. They discuss, at several points, how long it would take an average freight train to stop in an emergency (1 mile). However the derailed train was a _passenger_ train. What do the two have to do with each other? Nothing. That's like me blathering on about the stopping distance for a tractor trailer rig to someone who just overshot the mark in their Geo Metro junkbox. It's relevant in the right context, but I don't see that in either case here... This kind of CRAP is *exactly* why I quit watching any and ALL TV news, years ago. The news is no longer provided to keep you _informed,_ it is being SHAT into your home to keep you "entertained."
