If you were to model a rail lubrication point, it would add a unique part of the layout. Then some darker paint to represent the dirty, greasy track would add variety to the colors.

Good to get an update from you, Jason, and congratulations on finishing your MBA! You must be relieved to have graduated and move on to other rewarding tasks. You've been able to add some great rolling stock and locos, especially that graduation gift Nickle Plate Road diesel...very sharp looking. I wish now that with all times I took the Shaker Rapid Transit to downtown Cleveland, I'd known about the NP yard. Your weathering technique demo was very informative and the result was stunning. With expense of Atlas Track, I wonder why you didn't use Ross track. Beside making switches, there's also a complete line of layout track with great detail and lower pricing. I only know the pricing details. It might be difficult to work with. Regardless, your weathering demo using an airbrush it quite amazing. On my HO layout, years ago, I used a fine tipped paint brush. Needless to say, it was tedious. Good to hear from you once again, Jason, with all the good news. Looking forward to the next instalment.

18:32 Absolutely. I've seen scores of HO (and 2-rail O) layouts where the ballast is right up to the tops of the ties with the ends covered--just like the prototype. It puzzles me how many of us 3R-O operators (meaning *specifically* those who strive for realism in most every part of their scenery) leave their trackage sitting _on top_ of their ballast work rather than in_ it.

Congrats on the degree. The layout looks great. Love the Nickle Plate FM! I’m just starting my new layout (was building benchwork this afternoon). It is going to be a combination 2-rail/3 rail layout where each will have a separate right of way. I’m going with minimum 081 curves on the 3 rail (49.5” minimum radius on the 2-rail) so hopefully the two different track systems blend together as well as possible. The Atlas 3R track on your layout looks really good!

Those Atlas O boxcars are fantastic looking! I haven't bought any O scale rolling stock yet, but those will probably be near the top of the list. Thanks for showing the track weathering. I plan to build a small 3-rail O scale switching layout later this year (about 2x8 feet) and was thinking about how to weather the rail and ties since it will be different than in N or HO like I have done before. In N scale I often go pretty dark with the rails to make them less noticeable when using code 80 rail. With O scale, everything is easily visible, so I think it is more about getting the colors and textures right than anything else. Your rail color looks great! One thing I've been pondering (and probably I'll just try it both ways on some sample track) is whether to do the middle rail the same as the outside rails. I've seen some amazing 3-rail O layouts that have all three rails weathered the same and some that either leave the middle rail as it is or paint it a grimy black color to try and hide it even more. Since I haven't seen any of those layouts in person, I was wondering what your thoughts were on that in terms of what you think looks better in person under artificial lighting. I realize it is probably largely a personal preference sort of thing, which is why I plan to try out both ways, but wondering what you have learned in that regard thus far in your O-scale career. Also, congrats on the MBA!
@JDStucks

I highly recommend them, you won't be disappointed. I decided to paint the center rail, but a little lighter than the outside. Personal preference as you mention. And thank you for the congrats!

Congratulations on your academic achievement! I wish you all the success in the world going forward. Love your layout, love your trains. As a lifelong N scaler if I was ever going to change scales I’d go straight for O, although I doubt I’d have the space to properly do it justice. Having handled some Lionel freight cars in the recent past I find that there’s just something about the size and heft of O gauge trains that is so alluring. Looking forward to future videos!

Only an OCD person would explain their OCD. The compulsion is real. And rears it’s ugly head as it pleases. Mine shows up when I try to buy an MTH Road Number I already own. Jason...this was a terrific tutorial. Spoken easy enough to understand and perform. The weathering looks quite realistic. May I ask what type of power supply you used for the air brush ? I also use denatured alcohol to clean my Atlas track...it does a great job with the first once over. And it also takes the black off the center rail trough multiple passes. I feel my trains run better when yhe black has faded or gone. Your thoughts ? Great to have you back and kudos to you...your studies and completion of your MBA. 👍
@JDStucks

Really glad you enjoyed it. It was an electric compressor that came with the kit. And I don't know if taking the black off the center rail has helped at all, but the denatured alcohol has always been my preference. Thanks again!
