I worked for Pandrol Jackson in 1999,which was bought out by Harsco Corp in 2000. The shop in Syracuse N.Y . was building a Plow /Ballast Spreader for the Alaskan Rail Road . The shop was using prints from one of the original plows they had built in the 40s . From what I remember I was told Pandrol Jackson use to be Jackson -Jordon at one time . I believe the Plow was one of the last projects that was done at the Syracuse shop , before they closed .

•How is a Canadian loco being used for work in Minneapolis? •Does the spreader have its' own engines for everything but locomotion? •The spreader has lights. (Not on.) Does it have it's own horn? •Does the spreader have brakes?
@royreynolds1083 жыл бұрын
1 The DP took over the old Soo Line. 2 Yes, the engine operates the hydraulics and generator for lights and AC. 3 Yes, I think that was its horn at the end. 4 Yes, absolutely. With a correct set-up of controls, the engineer can operate the pusher loco and air brakes from the cab of the spreader so he can see where he is going and doing. In the old days, a Jordan spreader was air-powered and took its control air from the train line and had a large air reservoir about where the engine is on this one. The air cylinders were large also. Hydraulics are easier and more precise to use than air.

I just got done listening to the audiobook version of "Nothing Like it in the World," which is Stephen Ambrose's account of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. As I was watching this, I was marveling that everything required to build the Pacific Railroad (as they called it back then) had to be done by hand. You know, the grading, laying the ties and track, spiking them in and filling in the ballast. Also making all the cuts and fills, and building trestles. And the Central Pacific had to cut tunnels through the solid granite of the Sierras using hand drills and black powder (or nitroglycerin). It simply boggles the mind that they were able to accomplish the feat.

Are they going to lay a second track alongside or is it just to keep the track side neat and tidy? It looks to be very wide on one side compared to the other and I guess new stone has been positioned by an earlier train at great expense. I have never seen this being done in any of the many countries I have travelled to and worked in. They just let the side be and spray weedkiller and chop back overhanging branches.
