Superb vid . I live on the Isle of Wight. It's a great little island on the south coast of England. Just across the water from Portsmouth and Southampton. The rail network on the island used to cover most of the island but alas fell short to its existing network which is demonstrated in reality and on your sim vid . We lost so much to the rail network cuts of the smaller branch lines of the UK and the island thanks to the transport department and a one Dr Beeching during the 1950s and 60s . Anyway thankyou again for a great vid .

I'm from Southampton, just over the water from the Isle of Wight; in fact, I had a week's holiday there in August this year with my family. If you're ever in the UK, the island is worth visiting - fly to London, catch the train to Southampton or Portsmouth and then the ferry to the island. I love the fact that you researched the route so well - I had no idea that they use old Underground stock; that fact makes it ironic that the lights didn't work well in the tunnel - maybe why London Underground got rid of them! ;)

Hello to you. I actually live on the isle of wight in Sandown and i used to have to catch thos train every morning. There is only 2-3 trains running at a time, and can only pass each other at st. Johns station and Sandown station. The journey takes 20-25 minutes in total. But the journey is so rough on your backside, lol. This year 2021 they are getting new trains for the island, but its still 30 year old rolling stock from the london under ground. I believe they are relaying the entire track as the line closed a few days ago (jan 2021) and will reopen in march 2021. If you want to ask amything please feel free.

Hi Blu, I live about 2-3 hours away from the Isle of Wight, have visited multiple times as a child (25-30 years ago) and in recent years I've made a few one off day trips. Where you started your journey is the "Fastcat" catamaran terminal. At 5.50 you go past the hovercraft terminal which is unique way to get across to the Island. It's a very peaceful place to explore with my favourite place there being "The Needles". The entire area around the IOW is steeped in history from Henry VIII's Mary Rose sinking, World War 2 fortifications and naval port of Portsmouth which is where the new aircraft carriers are based.

Actually the Smallbrook junction station is only there to connect to the steam train. There was a whole network of lines on the island and now there is only that one and the 5.5 mile steam train line - the others have been dismantled or turned into cycle tracks. You are right, the trains, built between 1938-1940, really do break down often but I'm pretty sure they have a more macho sounding horn than that as far as I remember:)

Its funny that in the age of steam there was never a station at Smallbrook, just a small signal not and as the name suggests a junction. it was for the route between Ryde Pier Head and Cowes. I don't think the platform was built until the 90's. This line also closed in 1966.

@@BluGames This line continued to Ventnor until 1966 when they terminate the line at Shanklin. Up until then there were two platforms at Shanklin station. My Grandfather worked on this route from 1934. He was initially a ganger and used to walk from Shanklin to Ventnor station each morning, checking for obstructions. He then worked at Wroxall and then Ventnor stations and finally at Ryde St Johns until his retirement in 1977. He had lots of stories of his time on the railway. One that sticks to mind he told me on our walks on the by then dismantled track. He'd show me a cave in the embankment behind the overgrowth. During his time in the railway home guard during WWII, he'd been captured by the Paratroop regiment on an exercise. However he escaped and hid on this cave all weekend to evaded recapture.

Fun facts * The Isle of Wight is only approx. 12 miles from top to bottom. * You can purchase a London to Shanklin through-ticket which includes the hydrofoil (a ferry with skis) from Portsmouth to Ryde Pier Head. * At Smallbrook Junction you can change onto a steam line that heads West across the island. This is the only other line on the island.
