You could easily have approached most platforms in a 10 car 707 between 35-40 mph. I have my own braking technique which I find is quite effective - on the HUD, each platform shows a milage counter at the ramp - from this number you can work out a braking point, although you must take into account the type of train, length, position of stop marker, gradient and weather conditions. For example, with the approach to New Malden, you are on a reasonably level gradient, conditions are dry and your train is 10 cars long. An application of between 45% and 55% from 60MPH at 0.20 miles from the platform ramp should be sufficient to bring the speed down to about 35 at the platform ramp and stop the train by the marker with minimal adjustments. This technique should reduce the need to fan the brakes as much, which can actually increase the chances of over-running a platform - it is not good practice to coast down large amounts of a platform as this is where you can get distracted. This technique does require practice and good knowledge of the route being driven, but I have got much more enjoyment out of TS since using it. I hope this information is somewhat helpful to you.

I prefer to err on the side of caution on the brakes, as it is very easy to overrun platforms, especially if you aren't used to the train or the train has poor brakes (class 166, I'm looking at you!). I usually start braking around half a mile to a mile before stations, usually using a mixture of step 1 and step 2 braking. I try to enter platforms around 30 mph. I find a good rule of thumb in train sim classic is say if your doing 60 mph, to start braking when the station is 0.6 miles away. If your doing 80 mph then start braking at 0.8 miles away. It's not perfect but I find it tends to work quite well most of the time.

Also I notice a lot of people rely on full service brakes in a lot of train sim streams/videos, which is not only poor practise but also might be uncomfortable for passengers. I've heard it's good practise to use step 1 and step 2 for braking and only use step 3 (full service) when you really have to. This advice is for trains with four step braking systems, for trains with different braking systems then the above advice does not apply. Also I notice a lot of people whack it straight into full throttle when leaving stations, which again I think is poor practise for most trains. In real life most trains tend to set off quite slowly to give people a smoother ride and so that passengers standing don't fall over when the train starts moving. Unless it's a really slow train like the class 166 or a steam train, then I rarely go straight into full power.

@@montyburnsgaming3609 The original BR instructions for 3 step brakes were to use step 3 for the initial application and then ease down once the speed had reduced - only reducing to step 1 at the stop marker. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJC4d4F4Z7qdm8U It is also good practice to avoid fanning the brakes frequently, although this is more acceptable with tread brakes. Obviously, there is no rigid technique and you must adapt to the train and conditions - you would not handle a CEP in the same manner as a 365.

I haven't heard of that method before, so the rules must have changed. Maybe too many drivers were overshooting platforms relying on step 3, I'm not sure. I find using step 1/2 generally works well for me, I find I can usually stick to the timetable and rarely overshoot or have to use full service. Check out some of my train sim videos on my channel if you want, and see what you think of my driving.

Nice video. Finally got around to watching! Norbiton is the first stop on the Kingston Loop and is in the standard PDL route from DTG. Next stop would be Kingston Upon Thames IRL. Then it would go on to Hampton Wick, Teddington and then either split off left to Shepperton or go past Strawberry Hill depot and station and finally round to Twickenham to join the Reading line. The only thing you did wrong was have the 707 in DOO mode. All SWR services run with guards. That aside, pretty good driving from you! haha

Looking at applying to be a train driver at GWR and looking for a sim to try out. What's your best recommendation? TS2022 or TSW2?

This is one route that desperately needs completing . Just imagine being able to drive all the way from Waterloo to Bournemouth , or even Weymouth , as that after all is the south western mainline .The Brighton line the Portsmouth line and all the other smaller branches , are at the end of the day just branches off the Main . Sorry for the rant , but I just cant understand for the life of me why the South Western has allways been so overlooked !! Thanks for another great vidio Alan , always very enjoyable .

Hi Alan. Are you not doing a lot of YT anymore? There’s loads of new stuff out like the hope valley and Huddersfield line routes as well as stuff from AP to name a few and you haven’t done any first looks on these.. are you just doing twitch now? If it is it’s a shame as I can’t watch live and prefer the YT content.

Twitch is priority currently but you tube is still very much a big part of what I do Sadly time/reward with KZbin is at a all time low

Train was far too quiet for me, not really a fan of modern electrics, prefer old noisy diesels. Don't worry about the frame rate, Central London is laggy for just about everyone, it's a limitation with the game engine, although you could try reducing the graphics settings and see if that helps.
