The New York Central used their Dreyfus Hudsons for the famous 20th Century Limited. Absolutely amazing train and the videos from days past just show the raw speed of those engines and near full throttle. I believe they’ve hit 80-100+ a few times. I’d hate to be the fireman when they reached the Broadway (6 line right of way) and saw the Broadway Limited from the PRR and the race to Chicago started.

Pretty sure there’s also speculation that they were capable of reaching 140MPH too

Also the UP 844 wasn't built for speed unlike the Hudson, because UP 844 was a freight train built for pulling power to pull heavy objects while Hudson was a passenger steamliner built for speed to passengers from point A to point B quickly

Man you don't that ups were passenger frames later on in their lives after steam start being retired they yes they pulled Freight but they were primarily built for passenger

Panzer Jager Tiger Porsche -Like most 4-8-4's, the UP 800's were dual service engines, fast passenger AND fast freight. They were actually built primarily for fast heavy passenger service and routinely handled crack passenger trains like the Overland Limited and the Portland Rose. Unlike Hudsons, they were built for both mountain and flat land running. They were definitely high-speed engines, built to pull heavy passenger trains at top speeds of at least 90mph. The last batch (like 844) were built to top 100mph. They didn't run at those speeds all the time, but they did on occasion, either on trial runs or when making up time. 815, one of the early batch, hit 102 mph with a 1000-ton Association of American Railroads test train (including dynamometer car) in 1938. Well, I already knew who was going to win from the start, and there are three main reasons why the Hudson won over UP 844. Number 1: the NYC Dreyfuss Hudson was equipped with a booster engine on the rear axle of the trailing truck. Number 2: The Hudson had a total engine and tender weight of 785,500lb./ 356,297kg. compared to the UP FEF-3s 902,100lb./409,185kg. Finally Number 3: The Hudson is a streamlined locomotive, which means it's more aerodynamic than the UP northern, so drag was also a factor in 844s loss. Anyway, keep up the great work Oliver, I can't wait to see you give your opinion on other American Steamers. 👍

The Union Pacific 844 is an FEF-3 (Four Eight Four) Class 4-8-4 that was built on Christmas Eve of 1944 by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady (skin-neck-teddy) New York, and is the only steam locomotive that has never ever EVER been retired by a class 1 North American railroad, and because of that, she's known as "The Living Legend", but since Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 is currently running the excursions for the Union Pacific Steam Team, the 844 is sitting in the Union Pacific Steam Shops in Cheyenne Wyoming, left out, and not feeling the love it was getting before Big Boy's return to steam. How do I know all of this? I'm autistic, I grew up loving steam locomotives, American, British, you name it, I love em all. I know alot about the majority of the steam locomotives. My favorite American steam locomotive is the Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 S-2 Class Berkshire #765, and my favorite British steam locomotive is the Flying Scotsman. Of which by the way, earlier this year, the Flying Scotsman just turned 100 years old! Anyway, I'm back to watching your videos, Oliver, you're SSSSSSOOOOOOOOO close to 100,000 subscribers, you got this, I believe in you! 😊💞🥰💗😚❤️💕💖💋💝😘😍💓

One note that I, a pathetic American, would make is that we pronounce locomotive numbers a bit differently here. While the rest of the world pronounces locomotive numbers digit-by-digit, America pronounces them like times. For example, 844 wouldn’t exactly be called “eight four four”, but rather “eight forty-four”. 4449 would be pronounced “forty-four forty-nine”, 3985 would be “thirty-nine eighty-five”, and so on. Just a tip i’d like to leave in a friendly way before any sticklers flood your comments with it :)

Nice video laser, but thing to take away is that is not just a NYC hudson, it is a J3 V1 streamlined Hudson. (Sorry for saying that you were partly wrong but that's ok, I just wanted to say it because i live in the U.S.A.
