Train Time, ALWAYS, Expect the Unexpected. Know whats behind you.

When filming a train coming at you, unless you are not paying attention, something can sneak up behind you pretty fast. So give yourself plenty of room, and be aware of your surroundings.

Very good tip, During my railroad career with the Canadian Pacific we were always told by management about situational awareness when out on the tack or near the tracks since we all can get distracted at one time or another. Nice video and have a wonderful rest of your evening.(Steve)

My son works for NS, and they really push awareness big time. Many times I read about a railroad employee that has been hit and killed, especially in a railyards. All that noise and equipment moving can be very distracting, Thanks Steve, and have a great day.

Oh yes indeed I bet they do. We have had fatalities here and there throughout my RR career also. Yes Railyards can be very dangerous also if your not paying attention. Of course double and multiple tracks are especially dangerous. I have had similar experiences. One turned into a close meet between a westbound and an eastbound on CPRAIL Keewatin sub in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.

I'm always amazed when watching historic footage and viewing photographs of how often the photographer/videographer would set up in the foul or even in the guage of a track, sometimes even a main track.

Every railfan should see this video! I recently saw a video about an incident at a rail event. A well known guest or newswoman stepped past the engine of the showtrain, and the fast train took her in full view of the crowd.

At 0:40 I heard the horn and thought "It already passed, why no Doppler effect?" and the other train flew by. Definitely a good demonstration for a good message.

Probably no doppler because I was standing behind a huge signal relay box. That might have blocked the sound, or the coal train may have been along side blocking the sound. Thanks for watching

Another tricky one: when I was a teen about 20 years ago I'd regularly walk down and along the tracks to watch trains (I now recognize this as trespassing, young me didn't). After a couple years roaming in the same area I thought I knew the routine and what to expect. Until one day a single engine with maybe 1 or two freight cars came up blazing fast, probably 65+ in an area that almost always had about 45mph trains tops. If i would have been crossing the bridge I'd have to jump, got hit, or made them go into emergency. Yet another reason to not trespass and stay the hell off the tracks!

Yes Sir Jack, when I was young and dumb I went Railfanning with my older Brother in the large (at that time) B&M yards in Somerville (Boston) about 1974' I was 16 I think and we split up to save time and take pictures at different parts of the Yards. So I didn't know all I should then and as I was Taking photos of the SW-1 Switching among the Tracks and cars one of the B&M guys came up to me and said "Hey make sure your careful around here there's always cars being moved in both directions" !! I said okay thanks I will, so not more than 5 minutes later I saw a break between a string of cars and I was walking through them to get to the other side and then a crazy LOUD Bang and the cars to my right were moving right at me 4 feet away and I "Dove" out of the way as they Banged hard into the couplers 4 feet the other side !!!! 😳 😰 They were Flat switching at this area and letting the cars roll and bang against the others !!! I had never seen that before and I sure learned my lesson fast, it was close !!! I didn't tell my older brother this until like 10 years later, he shook his head and says you were really lucky !! I said yes we both were and you didn't have to tell Ma & Dad that Ronnie got Squished in a coupler 😏and maybe we were being looked out for that day !! 🙏😇 Well I never have anything dangerous happen again with the Railroads since !!! 👍

Hello sir. I had video cameras like you. What program did you use to present these videos? I have close to 500 videos!

Didn't really have a program. My Sony camera would transfer them right to my HD. The camera also had cables to hook to my VCR, and run them through the camera to the HD. Only program I have where I pull them, and edit them, is Microsoft Movie Maker.
