After a magnificent week in Warsaw it was time to take the train to the next city in Poland. Many people recommended this place to me. I finally arrived in Zamosć! And oh my goodness, were you right. It's an absolute stunning Polish city. All the way in the east close to the Ukrainian border. Go on this journey with me and feel free to reach out, message or support 🥰

Europy zachodniej (Niemcy, Francuzi, Skandynawowie, Benelux, Szwajcarzy etc.) - posługują się stereotypami. Polak, to złodziej, leń i oszust... ... Kocham Cię, jak Ty kochasz... Świat Sławek K.

Nynke, another great video, I loved how you showed the wonderful Zamość, so rich in history and numerous monuments of the past. In return for this spark of joy I got from you, I'll tell you a little story. This story will be a continuation of the story of Queen Marysieńka from the comment to your video about the Palace of Wilanów. There is a connection between the Queen and the land of Zamość, but describing it requires sketching the historical background first, so bear with me. Zamość is a true pearl of the Polish Renaissance, founded by Jan Sariusz Zamoyski (1542 - 1605), Great Crown Chancellor and Great Crown Hetman (hetman -> commander-in-chief) of the Commonwealth of Two Nations -> Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów (this is the name of the state that was created by unification of Poland and Lithuania as part of the Union of Lublin in 1569). He was one of the most powerful and richest magnates of the turn of 16th and 17th centuries and founder of the so called 'Ordynacja Zamojska' -> 'the Estate of Zamość'. 'Ordynacja' was a special type of estate. It was indivisable, inherited by the eldest male descendant of the family (who held the title of 'Ordynat'), and created by excluding a specific land area from the general provisions of law and granting it a special statute approved by the Sejm (Sejm -> Polish Parliament). Jan Sariusz Zamoyski was thus the first 'Ordynat' of the 'Ordynacja' of Zamość, which at the end of his life included in total 6 towns, 149 villages and 3,830 square kilometres (!) of land. You showed his monument at 13:54 and between 14:00 and 14:15 you showed a beautiful church. This church is the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. Thomas the Apostle, designed by the Italian architect Bernanrdo Morando in an architectural style known as 'renesans lubelski' -> 'the Renaissance of Lublin'; this magnificent Cathedral is the burial ground of the 'Ordynats' of Zamość, including, among others, the first 'Ordynat' and city's founder Jan Sariusz Zamoyski, the second 'Ordynat' Tomasz Zamoyski, son of Jan Sariusz (the charming town of Tomaszów Lubelski located 36 km south-east of Zamość is named after him) and the third 'Ordynat' Jan 'Sobiepan' Zamoyski (1627 - 1655) son of Tomasz. We are interested in the third 'Ordynat' who earned a nickname 'Sobiepan' -> 'master of himself' from his contemporaries due to his fiercely independent character. History remembers 'Sobiepan' as a drunkard and womanizer, but also a brave military commander who successfully defended Zamość in 1656 against the Swedish forces during their invasion of Poland known as 'Potop' -> 'the Deluge'. But above all, history remembers him as the first husband of Marie Casimira de la Grange d'Arquien, the future Queen Marysieńka. Yes! Marysieńka was a widow when she married King Jan III Sobieski in 1665. However, as opposed to the marriage with Jan III Sobieski, her marriage with Jan 'Sobiepan' Zamoyski was a marriage of aristocratic arrangement and not of love. The person who arranged it in 1658 was Queen Marie Louise Gonzaga, the then wife of King Jan Kazimierz, the predecessor of King Jan III Sobieski. The marriage with Marysieńka unfortunately did not prompt 'Sobiepan' to change his drinking and womanizing habits, hence there was no true love between the spouses. Marysieńka spent most of the time in Zwierzyniec, the then village and now a small town located 28 km south-west of Zamość, the summer residence of family Zamoyski. It is in this place that Marysieńka met for the first time Jan III Sobieski, they fell in love and began secretly corresponding with each other. Luckily for Jan and Marysieńka, the riotous lifestyle of 'Sobiepan' led to his premature death in 1665, and this event paved the way to the subsequent marriage of love that I described earlier. Ah, one more thing before I leave. At 9:49 you showed a plaquette with an inscription 'The Szczebrzeszyn House'. You may remember the word 'Szczebrzeszyn' from the famous Polish tongue twister 'W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie, i Szczebrzeszyn z tego słynie' -> 'In the town of Szczebrzeszyn a beetle buzzes in the reeds, and Szczebrzeszyn is famous for it'. What the plaquette tells you, among other things, is that the town of Szczebrzeszyn really exists. It is located 20 km west of Zamość on the road to Zwierzyniec, and like Zamość it also has a Rynek and Ratusz, albeit smaller and not as opulent. And what do you think you'll be able to see in front of the Ratusz? You guessed it, the monument of the famous 'chrząszcz' -> 'beetle', 2 metres high, wearing a top hat, tailcoat and high boots and holding a violin in his hands, with which he presumably plays this famous 'buzz'. 😃 All these towns mentioned above (Zwierzyniec, Szczebrzeszyn, Tomaszów Lubelski) are located in the geographic region of Roztocze, a land of immense natural beauty (Zamość is located just outside this region, less than 10 km from its border). Owing to this beauty some people call it the Polish Tuscany. I remember that some time ago you had an idea to visit the land of Lublin (of which Zamość and Roztocze are part) with your friend in a camper. If this can still be done then go for it, because now you know that it is well worth it. Uściski Ninko. 🍀🥰🤗

Oh How I miss my lovely Poland...Nothing Compares 2 U :) If you can get, read ''Commonwealth of both Nations. The silver age.'' by Pawel Jasienica (in English). It greatly depicts those times when Zamosc was created/built. Summer times they open this rail connection Rzeszow - Zamosc (as far as I remember only Saturdays and Sundays, I believe it's by ''PolRegio'' rail company). It's a majestic journey through the Podkarpacie and Roztocze regions. Awesome. I used to cycle alongside most of the line as far as Zamosc and the comeback home by train...years ago.

@@thewritingtraveler Zamość was built sonner however city law received in the year 1580. It was a time of The Greatness of Polish Commonwealth. One of the most valiable and influential statetman after the king The Grand Chancellor of the Crown Jan Zamoyski received it as a gift for royal duty. He had a lot's of money, so he hired many italian and polish architecs! As soon they came, he ordered them to rebuild the whole city in the Renesance style. That's why the city is so different and even more beautiful. Many people call it Padova of the North or Pearl of the North!

To think that Zamość was (basically!) a dream of ONE MAN - one of the most powerful man in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, second only to the King (VARIOUS Kings actually - three of them) - an aristocrat named Jan Zamojski (or Zamoyski if You will) - hence "ZAMOŚĆ" is de facto named after him. Chancellor, politician, statesman and quite an exceptionally good general, too - rare "combination" even back then! Powerful (and RICH) enough to be able to build a whole CITY that he named after "him-own-good-self"! 😄 PS. Tells you enough about how much the ARISTOCRACY held the reins in the politics of Poland and (EVEN MORE SO!) of the Grand-Duchy of Lithuania, which... wasn't a good thing at all for the most part. So much power & so many riches in the hands of so FEW people led to good things in cases of loyal and exceptional men, like Zamojski ...but when they were STUPID or too EGOTISTICAL or simply CORRUPTED... then it spelled ruin for the whole Country. "Kròlewięta" is a term in Polish histioriography that means "Little Kings" ("Uncrowned kings" - regional "power-brokers", that would serve whomever they fancy).
