Throughout my day to day life, there are many words that most people do not know about when referring to the railway, which is irritating. A good number of these terms are very useful, so today I will be outlining some in a pseudo-humorous fashion (I'm not good enough for the actual comedic effect).

I used the word, "Alight," to my partner while getting off a train. They had no idea what I meant and told me off for using, "Train nerd words," I despair.

Alight's a pretty basic one I'd say, that's surprising.

@@GWVillager I was astounded too, even said its just a normal word, but nope, they didn't believe me simply due to never having heard it before, just told me to say "Get off like a normal person".

Somehow I only first heard "Alight" in the past year, despite knowing probably most of the terms in the video, and in the time since I last heard it has seemed like a term most people but me knew. I guess it is because I haven't used public transport much in my life.

Please Sir ....I think I did very well as I knew most of the terms. I am / was a child of the steam era and just loved it all . Separate carriages with corridor, the leather belt thing to open the window . All so exciting. My pet hate of today's generation .......the use of " Train Station"... it's Railway station to me . Loved your video .

The word "railway" seems to be slipping out of public vocabulary in general unfortunately.

I was 35 years on the railway. You have no idea how dim some people can really be. "How do you steer a train"? Was a common one. " how many carriages can a train pull"? Was another. The classic though was, "when you get to Maidenhead, how do you know if there's a train coming from Marlow"? He was thinking we might crash. Oh yeah. I was at the dentist. When he discovered I was a train driver, he asked what kind of engine I drove. I said I drove multiple units. He asked what they were. I explained and he said," how do you get the engines to go at the same speed"?

your definition of train is controversial... more commonly its short for a service in the timetable.
@GWVillager
@GWVillager Жыл бұрын
I would argue that's just a service. Using train in that sense would probably be understood but the term refers to the physical vehicle rather than operation, doubling its meaning can create ambiguity.

Point of Order: the timetable contains Paths which may or may not be occupied by a Train - see STP and VAR, see also “Runs as Required”.

So, if there's only 1 DMU/EMU (Diesel Multiple Unit/Electric Multiple Unit). does that make it a Diesel Single Unit/Electric Single Unit? lol.
@GWVillager
@GWVillager Жыл бұрын
In theory, yes, though they tend to still use the DMU/EMU classification. The only instances of this in the UK are the Class 139 and 153, the former of which isn’t even diesel, but is still called a DMU!

@peddersmeister
@peddersmeister 10 ай бұрын
You know why it loading gauge is small, well it's generally accepted that the UK invented the modern railway nearly 200 years ago, and it was built for the tech of the time. Also the US is around 40x bigger than the UK, so you had more room to work with to start off. You could say that we were a little short sighted in seeing that we might need things to be bigger.

@@peddersmeisterNobody's mentioned him, so I'm going to: Brunel. His was 7'¼" and the GWR referred to it as Standard, the rest as Narrow Gauge. It was known as Broad Gauge by the spoilsports from oop norf who won out in the end. If only we'd run with the wider measurement; faster, smoother, larger and therefore more capacity.
