I'm so happy to hear you say you like Training even more than Trail Riding. I thought I was the only one! I could train all day!

I like everything about this video with the exception of the way you are backing the horse. I have never backed a horse by pulling on the face. I was taught to collect the horse and squeeze them forward. It seems to be quick and smooth and you aren't yanking on the mouth several times. The horse doesn't move forward at all. Would love to hear your explanation for the way you back in comparison. Thank you.

Wondering how to from the ground? Ground driving for reins and voice? Any other ideas? Wondering about children’s pony that is too small for an adult to ride.

Great question. You can do the same thing from the ground.

I am looking forward to getting my bit and doing some training. Although, my first training needs ti be to back-up. My horse gets frustrated when I ask him to pack; throws his head-up and dances (this is with a snaffle). You said you have a video on training to back-up your horse. With that said, I need to get my horse to back up before I practice this training.

I don't have a video of training a horse to back because no one ever brings me a horse that can't back up!!! Lol! Often the issue is you are pulling to hard and not rewarding the slightest lean back.

Ivy, I AGREE w/this approach. It WORKS!! The other day when I was in an open hay field, my horse got spooked and begin a run after doing a 180 on me. I yelled whoa and he actually stopped! It was so amazing that I was shocked! This works and must be practiced on a regular basis to make sure it is drilled in there nice and tight! Love what you do and I love your work! D Silliman

Nicely done! I will work on that with my horse. Please make a complementary video on how to teach backing up.

I am planning on working on the back up video soon, but the weather just turned cold on us!

I agree with much/most of your training techniques; with a few exceptions; but, in this video, I wonder why you are collapsing your shoulders forward when you are asking her to "stop with your seat." Sitting deep, is sitting back slightly, and shoulders should be back over the hips - right?
@andreakneale19344 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you are saying. Not to sound mean, but your rear came out of the saddle and your upper body was forward instead of back and seat/pelvis tipping slightly up/ forward and really stopping motion with your seat. I really learn from your videos. Thank you!

When they don’t stop well and you make them back, how many backup steps do you ask for? in other words, does it have to be the same number of back up steps each time?

How do u get the canter here
@IvyS5 жыл бұрын
I don't understand you question? I just cue for a canter. I spent time training it.

I have a question: why do you use a back up instead of just stopping her? Would it work the same or is there any difference?
@LittleWing36 жыл бұрын
I’m going to do this with my horse Ori!!! He is a very forward horse. Currently stops on verbal “whoa,” & light reins. Not with my seat. Thank you! I will update this over time!

I’m missing how you cued the cantor

So my horse has a stop and stand issue. If I reward her with stopping she will not stand, she gets antsy - tosses her head, stomps her feet. I ask her to back every time but she doesn’t do a full stop and stand until she’s tired. Thoughts??
@juliemusgrave27455 жыл бұрын
I should add she does just fine stopping on the ground and at liberty with me. She just constantly wants to be on the move in the saddle and I struggle to calm her down

I have a question it's kind of stupid but I can't figure it out does anybody know do Tennessee walkers usually have high or low Withers?
@shan7526 жыл бұрын
It depends on the other part of the breed of the horse. They could have a little higher whither. Unless it's a Tennessee walking mule. My walkers have pretty normal withers but slightly thinner shoulders so the saddle needs to be back a little more for the shoulder to move. My sisters 8 walkers. Only one of her walkers has a very low wither. Some of her horses have broader shoulders with normal withers. That wasn't a stupid question it was good. ;-)

Ivy, I really like how you teach.Thank you. It's crazy to watch this video because it looks like my Dreamer girl. HA!!! I don't understand your purpose of the backup when she doesn't stop correctly. Why backup? Also why the feet stop (pulling down on the stirrups with your feet) and yet you say seat stop? when I do a "feet stop" I tend to go forward and slightly loose my balance . When I do a slight tuck with my core muscles and bum (very slightly sitting more on my pockets as some say) I have more balance when stopping. Just wondering those 2 questions. thanks for all your videos. I have a few of your DVD's and really like them.

shan752 the purpose of getting her to back when she asked her to stop and she didn't it's basically like a mere correction. You asked her to stop back there but she kept walking through and stoped when she wanted. So when you get her to back to where YOU ASKED her to stop it's going back and saying "no I asked you to stop back here so let's go back and fix that". Hope that makes a little sense. If it doesn't let me know and I will try better 😊
@shan7526 жыл бұрын
I get and agree with the training of 3 ways to get them to stop. But the backup is an additional training which when asking a horse to stop can get confusing. Your assuming the horse has a "bad" stop and a good "backup".... I've always been told teach one thing at a time and build on that. So the one thing would be "stop" not "if you don't stop fast enough then I will back you up". I agree like i said with the train to a voice, reins and seat stop.That's 3 training ideas/exercises. I agree to get them to stop where you need them to stop. But to do both in a beginning exercise training I don't understand. This is just my opinion that a horse learns faster if it's given one step to learn and build on that. Humans make less mistakes training when teaching one thing at a time and building on that one thing. It's like learning to write the letter A. You have to first learn how to draw a straight line, then a straight line in a direction, before learning how to make the letter A. Keep the videos coming they are good information for sure.

I need a video on teaching my horse to back up. She backs well when I'm on the ground, but doesn't understand when I'm on her. She will lower and tuck her head when I put a little pressure on the bit, but doesn't move her feet. If I also use my legs a little, she goes forward, or moves her front around. ... tries everything but backing. So, I need help with this before working on stopping by the method in this video.

I have a problem with the verbal whoa because a friend of mine was barrel racing and she over rated and someone from the crowed yelled whoa and the horse came to a complete stop and the girl was thrown off . You can’t stop idiots from yelling so I just don’t care for the verbal unless you don’t plan on going to shows
@IvyS5 жыл бұрын
That is a good point and easy to NOT train using the verbal if you are going to shows. :)

This is one thing I let my horse get away with lol thanks for the reminder. Stand and walk isn't in her vocabulary and we are working on that
@kevinferguson22786 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, your stirrup length is to short hindering proper balance especially when asking for a stop
