Learn how to MOVE like an Elite NHL Defender!
How to move like an elite NHL defender is all about taking it to the next level on how to play defense. In this Train 2.0 video, we dive further into the world of playing defense in hockey. We feature hockey skills and hockey drills that you can use to start looking more like Cale Makar when you take the ice. Specifically, this video will break down how to play better defense from the basic hockey mechanics, to how to defend in hockey, to how to effectively skate backwards and master the defense positioning. Finally, Jason reveals a little secret mechanic he used to level up his defense toolkit and that he uses to leverage the power of downhill skating. If you liked our previous video on how to play better defense, then this is the sequel. You don't want to miss it!
Learning how to skate effectively is the key to becoming a better hockey player. The Downhill Skating system is the next evolution of hockey training, built through insights gained from watching thousands of hours of NHL Superstar Mechanics, and turning them into actionable hockey training and hockey drills for all levels.
Whether you're just learning to play hockey, are on the cusp of making the jump to the next level, or are already an established pro, Train 2.0 can help you reach that next summit in your hockey development journey. We hope you enjoy today's hockey mechanic tutorial.

All that is really good but when you play with better and very fast forwards you are going to want to do backwards skating much more consistenly in order for you to keep up much more and so that they dont accelerate and start skating much faster catching you of guard. So doing backwards crossovers more consistenly is gonna give the forward a much harder time getting past you and all that, but just my expirience and opinion and i think what you show is especially great for the youth/young defencemen who needs to learn the basics

Thanks again Jason - can't tell you how many times I or a teammate have tried multiple backwards crossovers or kept our legs in tight to pivot and end up with our butt on the ground watching as a forward blows by with a direct line to the goal. A big concern of mine is maintaining speed when skating backwards to match that of a forward or just to stay in their path. You often see this in the NHL - a puck handler skates in and the defender, without applying a body check but still playing the body, occupies the puck handler's space, giving them nowhere to go and allowing the puck to slide under the defender who can simply either turn and play the puck or have space for a teammate to support and play the puck.

Yeah exactly, happy to help👍

God, thats so subtle. I need to get more speed on the crossover, I started as a goalie, so what you're saying totally makes sense, but it's like a race to the dot to see if they can get around me.

The question i have for non contact leagues is when the forward takes the 90 degree from the dot and is going hard to net? In my younger days it would have been bury them in the near post. But non contact requires restraint. How can we defend this scenario? Been a discussion in our league for a while. Any suggestions?

Right off the bat, you show 2 of the least defensive minded defencemen in the NHL, kinda funny! Also, check out Paul BOUTILIER - "Slower Coaching for Faster Results" video; especially in regards to posture. Makar has bad posture in the first clip, and was mostly luck that he actually poke-checked the puck away... Just my humble opinion, you have no reason to read what I'm putting down as legit or not... Good stuff though!
