Watch Eric Salas demonstrate how to take a show dog that will not behave or stand on a table and correct this problem. The solution to this problem is the first step in fixing; gaiting problems, stacking issues, pulling on a lead, pulling away from judges. Many videos available on www.EricSalasWorkshops.com
Eric is available for private and group training workshops, in-home animal behavior sessions and as a guest speaker.
The beautiful song at the end is called "The Bridge" and is one of the new songs from the legendary Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame artist Roger Fisher Founder and former lead guitar player for the band Heart Please visit his website at www.RogerFisher.com

Eric Salas, thank you so much for sharing this with us. My BRT was backing off the judges and now he is comfortable and relaxed when being examined.

Just what I needed. I’m a complete novice when it comes to showing. In 2 months I want to show my dog for the first time. I also noticed that if I keep my dogs head straight, his legs don’t move anymore, and he doesn’t try to sit when checking if he is intact.

No one is teaching this way. It's fantastic! My rambunctious dachshund "got it" right away. He loves it and barks at me to get me to work with him on the table.

Just a note here....he went out with a handler a month ago and finished in two weeks with three 5 pt majors and a 4 pt major. He's only 14 months old. I did notice upon returning home that he now tucks his tail and seems anxious on the table. My guess is the change to a more tight pull up on the table rather than the more gentle head straight method was intimidating for him. He will be fine but I do wish your method would be adopted by everyone. It's clear to see that for the dog it's a completely different experience. I think the old way created resistance.

I am so glad I found this video. As a new owner/handler I have had so many other people try to help me understand how to stack for conformation. This is Step One and looking forward to the next. JnJ Bulldogs & Frenchies

This video was my introduction to Eric Salas and from then on, I was desperate to attend one of his workshops. I managed this toward the end of last year (I think!) and it was one of the best things I did. I am now going to try for a follow up session at some point when he's back in the UK. If you're wondering how worthwhile his workshops are, then I assure you, they are.

I'm not sure I'm correctly understanding what to do with the hand. These are both tiny dogs in the video but I tried it with my deerhound puppy and he still is flinging his head about. Does this work on a larger dog, and if so, what adjustments would I need to make please?

My boy is also a CKCS and highly spirited... to say the least LOL 😂 Also is there a video that shows how to use the lead correctly up close? Eric Salas your videos just may save me so I can correctly train my dog!!!

Thanks so much for your wonderful demonstration. I was in tears today because I have a dog that freezes constantly in the ring. He is a real nice boy, but he absolutely refuses to walk in the ring. He walks everywhere else in the world, but the show ring seems to scare him to death. How can I help him?

@EricSalasworkshops 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is not the setting the problem is that you don’t have a strong enough bond with that dog so it sits anytime you want to do something you have to have fun you have to play games you have to put yourself in a leadership position by asking the dog to do something that you want to do then praise and reward and keep repeating watch my video we’re training starts

People should remember that your dog did not choose you. You chose to make it a part of your family and life. Your dog doesn't have much choice in anything. You make the decisions for it. You owe it to treat it well for being a part of your wish. Dogs will show you respect if you respect the dog. In all honesty I am sad to see this video and some of the handling here. Some dogs love shows and some dogs don't like it and would much rather be outside running in a field. Still some owners only care about what they got the dog for. Did you know that animals carry our burdens? Thoughts, aches and pain. They are willing to do anything for you, and this is how we treat them. I am sure the lady on the video loves her dog. She seams like a warm hearted person. Usually people don't think about these things and that's where we go wrong. Please, just because it's a small dog, you shouldn't handle it like you do. Lifting it around and placing it in unatural positions. Would you do the same with a rotweiler? The dog is using it's paw not because it doens't have any respect, but to signalise to you that "I don't like this mom, can you please stop". (btw I say it cause I don't rememeber if they said he or she in th video) I've trained my dog to do alot of things but NEVER with force, only with treats and love. It's never fun to practise something if all you get is negative feedback.Even when this dog stood still it at first, it didn't get anything in return. Would you work on things you hated for someone who did not consider how you feel to get nothing in return? Just think about it please. Animals are not our toys! They are living creatures with their own personalities and they need to be respected and loved for who they are, just like we do. I'm sorry this is long. It's not only about this video. I've seen too many now. Be good to your beloved little friends!

Beathe Haaland yes i do have a rottweiler that i do this with, she is very happy to play with other dogs and be admired at shows. she is happy protecting my wife and children and working hard daily pleasing mommy and daddy and in return she gets love, food, a house, warmth but she knows she is a dog and im a human and so does everyone else in my house. it isnt for lack of respect its for love and before you try to speak for people who have work dogs just know id rather man handle my dog and train him rather than some uneducated child because their parents never TRAINED them to understand behavior around a dog and agitates my dog to scare or injure the child defending itself then society puts him down because no one will adopt an "aggressive" 130lb rott puppy right? if you love your dog no matter what breed protect and that means train them how you see fit.

Bless. This video is really disappointing but unfortunately something I see a lot of in conformation. I get it’s a competition but they are dogs who deserve the time to teach them fairly and patiently. You will have a happier show dog if you take the time to work with them like a partner instead of a dictator.

They aren’t hurting the dog or mishandling the dog..they are trying to communicate to the dog what they wish him to do. That dog is wagging it’s tail, and is likely a cherished pet. It’s not wrong to train your dog, it’s your responsibility! My dogs enjoy training interactions, enjoy going to dog shows and enjoy going out on excursions. Untrained dogs are left at home, in kennels, on chains, because they can’t be trusted to interact with people or other dogs. That is a sad human failure. This is merely training. Don’t read something emotional into this that doesn’t exist.

I show my lab and I understand where you're coming from, but you're wrong overall. He is the happiest son of a gun in the world no matter what I do with him. I've trained him in duck hunting, obedience, agility, and showmanship and he has his favorites but he does what I tell him because we have a mutual respect and he gets to run around chasing birds when he's out of the ring. And stacking is the most natural and comfortable position for a dog. Many naturally walk into stacks. But show dogs are pampered and loved the vast majority of the time. Some owners/trainers suck, but this guy seems alright.

It is amazing how using pain can be so quick and effective. Pressure on the nerves in the neck gets results so much faster that taking time to teach the dog. It's not really cruel as these dogs are not pets they are here to win prizes. Awesome.
