People do still fight the same (primarily). Kata were not designed to fight against trained fighters (especially karate trained fighters). Kata were designed to fight against habitual acts of violence (head butts, tackles, swinging punches, head locks etc etc). These are still the most common attacks thrown by the common thug. And most kata applications involve grappling. It was the japanese who made it a mostly-striking art

I totally agree with you :) I'm shodan in karate shotokan and I assure you that our class's are indeed split in three parts; basics, kata and sparing ^^ and as you said, if one wants to do TKW then he will do it, but I'm sticking to karate :3

@toanthony - thanks for joining the conversation. To answer your question the impression comes from the fact that the main explanation GKR give for all the criticisms they get is that they are purely a result of other people being 'jealous' of them. I also run a very large family oriented academy teaching NON traditional, practical karate and see nothing about GKR I would ever be jealous of.
@KingKarlos11 жыл бұрын
your correct in saying that majority of people dont fight the same as when these kata's were invented, but you can still use variations of these moves to adapt to a more modern confrontation

GKR training Goju in Japan. The GKR style is made up of 50% Goju, The other 50% is Keinshinkan which is Shotokan-based, these forms also shrink down to other Martial Arts including Kung Fu, Martial Arts is like a family tree. This is why when studying a martial Art, you can come across moves that are seen in other Martial Arts and they may have a different name.

You folks will love this one, Back when in the 1980's I decided to build a punching platform with springs on a door (your back in againist the door, you punch outward). I hand steers the springs to the door, and when I was done I stood away from the door to do punches (to build my stance). I did one punch and then it happened....WHAM !! The door hit me in the back, I it was a loose door that I just stood up againist the wall. 😛 I was laughing All the time that I took it apart. 😋

@nandino77 GKR stands for Go-Kan-Ryu. 'Go' translating as 'hard', and 'kan' translating as 'complete', 'ryu' of course implying school. So roughly translated, it reads as 'a hard, yet complete school'. The chief instructor trained for 20yrs in karate prior to starting GKR, in both Shotokan and Goju systems. He aimed to bring the strengths of each to one style.

Hi Michael, basic (traditional) training in these styles has little to do with economy of movement. Its part training the muscles of the body to act instinctively, in a way that engages the correct muscles for power. More often the basic techniques of karate are not for strike fighting, but rather grappling defence and locking up. When you get to toe to toe combat, economy of movement becomes more apparent

So strong and demanding the training of true martial art in Japan ... Westerners absorb knowledge and use it effectively ... Those who have Pride UFC videos of the 90s and the first decade of the 2000s will see how they always won in the western fights ... while the Asians left with their deformed faces in the hands of heroes like Gracie, Don Frye or Emilianenko or Cro Cops ... To name a few ... While Westerners won cups, the Japanese appeared with shattered faces ... Currently there are very few Orientals in MMA ... They take care of their face and continue selling their beautiful tradition ... blows with shouts and heroic expressions that the Japanese look with admiration (in the dojo, not in the octagon).
@DW0112 жыл бұрын
I don't do traditional karate but even i know that if you research a little on 'Karate Bunkai' then you see all sorts of techniques that is useful for 'self defence', including trapping, throws and some grappling techniques.... But if you are talking about the typical MMA type sport grappling then no it doesn't, it was not intended as a sport or to be rolling around with the enemy.

well, applications are what they are.They`re all the same in every martial arts.I think of them as excercises that must be mastered in order to move one step forward.I dont intend for them to be useful in real life.But they hold a key to developpment,.Just my two cents. With great respect.

To be fair if you go back far enough every karate style is a hybrid of other things - kyokushin for example is part shotokan and part goju-kai. So that is no reason to knock something. GKRs failing is in being very poor karate taught by extremely poor 'instructors' to people who do not know any better.

GKR Karate International Just because A Mcdojo visits Seiwakai does not make the Mcdojo any less rubbish. The culture sucks in GKR and the students waste their time learning rubbish. I know because my nephew learnt in a GKR dojo in Surrey UK for 4 years and knew absolutely none of the basic principles of Karate body mechanics. Whenever the odd times I took my nephew there, the instructor who wore a black-white belt (meaning in their system, an instructor who is NOT a black belt) asked me so many questions about Goju-Ryu kata I might as well have given him a full seminar (I was 3rd Dan Iogkf at the time) At the fourth year of my nephew's training the instructor asked me about seipai, said he was about to get his Shodan grading, he was brown belt....I asked him: how long have you been training karate to get a shodan now ? He replied : about 4 years. I thought : wait a minute, I first saw you teach wearing a Black belt with a white strip 4 years ago ??? So you were teaching kids when you first began learning ??? I read up more about GKR and realized black belt with white strip in the middle means "a white belt who's teaching others". They'd go to class on Sunday, and start teaching what they learnt by next Monday. Yep folks, that's GKR for you.

Goju Ryu began in Okinawa, not Japan.

i used to teach and work for GKR, I did achieve black belt. The black and white belt was for instructors who were below black belt, i don't know of any white belt instructors when i was with GKR. Having said that the quality of instruction can vary greatly from dojo to dojo.

We do well in NAS but who on earth told you we own the format. Its run by Silvio Morelli in Melbourne and Jim Casey on the Gold Coast. Neither have anything to do with GKR. And who on earth told you we 'vowed we wouldnt go back to AKF'. Where do these rumours start? We were rejected years ago and have been wanting to and trying to get back in since. Not for any other reason to allow our top students the chance to compete with the most elite sport karate-ka in Australia.

my sensei tells me the same thing, he always mentions that you never will really learn the basic punches even after your dans, oss

Who is the Japanese man with the white hair and glasses at 4:50? It looks like the late Prof Tadahiko Ohtsuka.

@GKRmanagersAUS Thanks for the reply. I have been reading about GKR and, to be honest it doesn't have a good review at all and what I've seen I didn't like it, although is not my place to judge other people's karate (I have enough with my students and my own karate). What I really criticise is the McDojo business model that GKR has developed. I just don't think that's the correct approach. The title of this video is deceiving because nothing in here is GKR. It is purely JKF Goju-Kai Seiwakai.

Hi, like you I read alot of very negative reviews on GKR, long story short I'm a Blue belt now after 18 months and found the reviews to be unfounded, GKR is very disciplined, hard work and very dedicated Senseis. I'm 58 and find it very hard though everyone is very encouraging and ready to help and point out my mistakes. I average 9 lessons per week and if anything else I'm so much fitter than I've been in many years.
