Your videos are extremely valuable. Thank you! I rescued a very skinny TWH. After I get his muscle built and get him balanced, I will be watching your videos 100 times over.

Thanks so much. I have one trotty fox trotter and one pacey fox trotter. I now understand that I need to train them differently. I am so happy that I watched your clip. I will start using your method tomorrow. I have been doing the head down which they are learning well. Thanks Jo from new Zealand

This is SO HELPFUL!!!!! Thank you!! If you want to teach the gait as an extra. (Walk, trot, pace, gait, canter, gallop) What cue do you use? Teaching my standardbred to gait. She will do all 6 I’ve mentioned above. But pacing and gaiting are more rare and I don’t know how to ask for them. Thank you!

Thank you Ivy for the helpful videos. It's so hard to know what foot is hitting ground when....color wraps on different sides of legs would really help to understand which foot is hitting the ground first and when for us to know when it is right for new folks. Just a suggestion. Thank you, very helpful information.

Do you have any videos on pokie horses ? How to get Impulsion from a pokie, trotty horse and how you would go about asking for a more energetic/faster walk. I am working on softness/head down right now, so when i stop and praise at the walk, he is like " oh good, i get to stop" ... lol

I own said trotty TWH and ride him in a lumpy, uneven grass arena and also out on trails. He is barefoot so I'm wondering if it's ok to gait him on asphalt so I can hear footfalls?
@IvyS
@IvyS Жыл бұрын
Riding in the grass will make him more trotty. :) Ride on a hard, flat surface.

I have a question Ivy. I know you encourage people to purchase older gaited horses that can train the rider to gaited horses but this is more about younger horses. Is it important to have a gaited trainer train a gaited horse to ride or are they generally trained to ride like any other horse and then trained to gait at a later time?

You should leave more toe on the rear feet and trim the heel or even use a three eight toe weight shoe really helps a trottey gaited horse
@IvyS
@IvyS 2 жыл бұрын
The goal is to keep the horse barefoot and not use artificial means, ie shoes, to get gait.

If your gaited horse is trotty tell your farrier he will probably shoe the horse mainly working on the back feet longer toe drop the heel a bit and the video helps

Every time the horse gaits properly you stop. I'd leave them in it longer.
@IvyS
@IvyS 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the stop and praise (soak/rest/think) is the actual training time. Most of the horses would break to the pace or trot if I let them go longer. After a few days, they get stronger and their brain starts to understand what we are asking them to do and they start to be able to hold it exponentially longer. :)
@joyreaperLH

@@IvyS I agree they can't always carry the gait and they go in and out between trot and pace and then a few steps of correct gait. I do give rests and breaks but I don't stop when they hit the right one. I release a little. That's my signal they've found the right spot. Then when they break to trot or pace I begin to talk to their head and carriage. Just different. If it works for you, that's great. I've trained quite a few like this the last few years having added the Standardbred mix to my program and have several that have had significant trots or trot and pace that i have to deal with. I agree they are built over time but to me the repetition of staying in it is what builds the muscle memory.
