Advice from a Parris Island DI: 1. Listen to what we tell you, we are making you do it for a reason. 2. If you think you can or if you think you can't do something at boot camp, just do it and try it. If we are telling you to do it, you probably can. 3. Move fast. 4. When we tell you to fucking SCREAM, fucking SCREAM until your voice goes to shit. 5. Do not give up. If you want the title of Marine, or DI, or MARSOC Raider, or whatever, you won't give up.

Im ex British Army 15 years service, with 5 years SAS. My advice for joining the military is to do alot of cardio. Do alot of running and running with weight on your back up to 30kg. I see alot of modern American soldiers, who just do weights and want to bulk etc. That won't help you in real combat. Look at oldschool Green Berets, LRRP'S, SAS they aren't huge guys. There average build but in tip top shape.

I joined the USMC in 1958 -1962 just turned 17 and weight was 135 lbs 6 ' 1 " I had no problem passing all PT test actually the bigger guys had more problems and especially on long walks in the humidity and heat in the mountains of Okinawa some of our Sergeants were really out of shape of course they fought the Island wars and Korea and were starting to retire most were a great bunch of guys and all hero's to me. Man, this brings back memories of the PJ pipeline. My mindset was “this class will graduate on (date), I will either be standing tall with my team or somewhere wishing I was. These courses have a different objective but the same purpose. Keep you in a place where you aren’t sure if you can make it for as long as your body can handle it.

As a former combat engineer I can tell you I loved it. Try to go to a division unit. That’s where it’s at. I was only able to be in a logistics unit. It wasn’t THAT bad but I feel that I would’ve been a way better engineer if I had been at a division unit.

I was 6'3" 165 when I got out . Just about anyone can do the physical progressions to pass special forces training. The failure is usually due to the mental stress from the pace required while extremely fatigued to assimilate the material needed to succeed. How well can you mentally function when your physically crushed?

I was 1345 Equipment operator. That job has opened many doors for me outside of the Corps. I was in 1990-1994. The last 8 years I have made 80 to 100k working for a coal mining company. Don’t feel like your job isn’t as important as a infantry marine.

Three of pick up our rucks and just started hump. The gunny stop us and told us to get in the truck, you three made it. The four other whom didn’t start and complained were gone from First Recon. Spent 6 years as an 1833, did time with 3rd tracks and 4th AABn. At the time it did not seem like this badass job like what you may see on the posters but looking back at it I had a very cool and unique experience many do not get to experience. Plus it was hilarious sticking pennies on the top of the vehicle and getting a little extra water in the dungeon and seeing the grunts freak out!!!!

I think we’ve all heard, and many of us understand that its “okay to fail”, but when it comes to the military / SOF selection, I make no room for failure in my own mind - even if I gave my all after having prepared as thoroughly as possible. Just wanted to say how much that I enjoyed this video. The advice, and general comments for young men and women just starting out, I think is so valuable in all walks of life. I didn't serve in the military, but chose the fire service instead, but I think that this advice and information would be great for anybody wanting to be a part of something bigger than themselves. I understand what your saying about different mos . But in my days 85-00, we were 03s some comm guys and docs, we all learned how to do everything, we learned engines, Hotwire vehicles, we did all the schools the training and missions . We also did all missions green, black and gray. You lifted on own time, running, swimming and long cards daily. Hand to hand 4 days a week. Plus we at 3rd Recon was a 6 day work week . But Plts. and Co. Deployed all the time, never just staying in Okinawa. Mine the DRP inserted into a different country for ops every 30 days. So as platoon we maybe spent 60 days out of year in OKINAWA

Funny boot camp story: One of the recruits that came from Texas, grew up on a ranch. Grew up hunting his whole life. Knew everything about firearms. Bragged all cycle how he was going to shoot company high. Well once rifle qual. Day came, he was the only one in our 52 man platoon to shoot sharp shooter lol. Moral of the story, don’t worry about all the technical stuff. Weather it be boot camp, or recon, or even MARSOC. Just worry about being physically fit and everything else will fall in place.

Good, it’s good to have that mindset of not necessarily positivity, but the willingness to weather the storm/ shit storm that is sometimes the corps. Security Forces is only for two years, then you PCS to the fleet. If your monitor for your MOS let’s you, you may be able to go back to security forces in a higher leadership position than you were before out of BSG. For your first time completing your security forces tour, you will get your 100 points towards your promotion, meaning you will be in a leadership position in the fleet. Security forces focuses on different things than fleet infantry does, so since you have been practicing different skills for two years, you will be a little behind on straight leg victor unit skills. That’s alright, just don’t focus on how special you are because you came from security forces, and be willing to learn new things and acknowledge people of a lower rank than you may know more than you. You have to rise to the occasion, especially as a nco. Also for security forces, you tend to focus more on defensive, cqb, non lethal, and use of force tactics. This means you don’t hike as much as regular grunts or learn their offensive, supporting arms, company and battalion level tactics and above (since security forces always operates in smaller teams than fleet infantry) knowledge. In general though, just know the Marine Corps only promises you one thing, and that is to be a Marine. Anything else after that is up to luck, and to you. Keep your head up, see the big picture, stay away from demotivated lance corporals, and realize the Marine Corps is special, so instead of focusing on yourself, focus on how you can help others and make the Marine Corps better than you left it.

What exact part of Security Forces are you interested in? Yankee White (guarding the president/ Marine One-you never deploy or go anywhere or do much infantry training, but it looks great on your future resume), Personnel Reliability Program (PRP- either in Bangor, Washington State, or King’s Bay, Georgia. You also will never deploy since they guard nukes stateside), and Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST-probably the best option, since they usually go to Cuba, and each of their 3 companies go to either Rota, Spain, Yokosuka, Japan, or Bahrain.) I have heard that at BSG, there is no for sure way to get FAST unless you pass at the top of your class. If you don’t want to be at the top of your class, then I have heard the unofficial way to avoid PRP is to tell them you aren’t comfortable around nukes. I think any of the three options in Security Forces gives you a top secret clearance, and also, make sure the security forces contract you sign does NOT include Yankee White presidential guard IF that is not what you want. I have heard that if you qualify for a top secret clearance (based on a clean background check they run on you) AND pass the screening process for Yankee White, you WILL go Yankee White, bar none. Also, you will be OC sprayed in Security Forces , and everyone reacts differently, however, I can tell you it was the single worst pain I ever had in my life. Just to let you know. You will have to do it to pass the school. The school, called Basic Security Guard (BSG) school, is in Chesapeake, VA. It is about a month and a half currently, and i have heard it isn’t too bad, there is a lot of material but it isn’t too hard mentally or physically. After you complete it, you get your orders for either YW, PRP, or FAST. All the FAST companies are in Norfolk, and YW is obviously in DC. Don’t forget to focus on boot camp and itb first. If I told you something you aren’t sure about or you don’t like, please go and look it up on your own, or, ask someone like they said in this video. I have heard former security forces marines say it was a waste of time since all they do is set up concertina wire and practice “deadly force” instead of focusing on offensive infantry shit, and I have heard security forces marines say they got so much training and the rumored to be unprofessional FAST units are better than their fleet infantry unit, so it is a toss up on who your leaders in security forces are, really. Since security forces is only a two year tour, you don’t have a dedicated cadre of NCO’s to really mentor you and set the example, it is just SNCOS since everyone leaves so soon and corporals that are as boot as you are leading you. Finally, just know that even though it is peacetime and we might not be going to war so FAST can give you more training, security forces makes you have an EXTRA YEAR onto your entire active duty enlistment contract. So that means while all your buddies are eas’ing after 4 years, you have a whole nother year to serve.

I thank you for your service but one thing God has a plan for all of us. I was pre enlisted i had went to meps did physical the lil small swearing in but i ended up crushing L2,3,4 doing bench squats in the gym prepping for my ship date. So there are some buts i believe that are believable. My love was all in for the Corp. I was so devastated, it literally sent me into a tail spin with so much opiate intake that ended up almost costing me my life. But it never changed my patriotic love for this COUNTRY. I'd still go right now if i didn't have to train. Unfortunately i can't sit or stand for more than a hr at a time. But another thing the grace of God got me threw my addiction to opiates and over the depression. I'm praying for you, your message, and your channel. God bless

I agree, Cody! My whole life I told myself I would join the military. Senior year three of my friends did. That summer after high school my really close buddy came to me one day and said he signed with the Marines, I asked for the recruiters number and went and signed. Like I just did it, one day I woke up with no idea in my head of signing and did. It does take lots of bawls to sign with any military branch period! In total myself included have six of us all signed with the Marine corps! It's been a great experience so far and only going to get better.

Hey Nick and Cody thank you very much for creating this video! Super helpful and a lot of great wisdom that will help me!! Question: I just enlisted in the Marines in June and I ship out in December, I haven’t sat down with my recruiter yet to pick an MOS or talk about it, the dream for me is to one day earn Force Recon and be apart of the team. You mentioned doing a non-03 MOS first before doing Recon selection, if I did Crash Fire/Rescue can I still go to Recon Selection down the road?

I have a good friend Felix Acosta "Pete" retired SgtMaj now. He was a Reconnaissance Marine for 16 years at 2nd Recon BN, then went on to be the SgtMaj for 3rd MSOB. I think he went on after that to be the SgtMaj for the Raider Regiment.

Listened to an interview with Travis Hailey a couple years ago and he said the worst thing you can do if you wanted to be a force recon or marsoc dude is go in as an infantryman. You will never have time to physically prepare.

Im recently serving in the US Army as a Cavalry Scout. And looking at the video I completely agree. Its the same in the Army. My goal is to serve at least 2 branches and the Marines is something i want but know is gonna be just as stupid. Im.doing it for the resume after college

I like how he said if you joined you’re my friend. I was airborne infantry and on my 18 month mark from joined I was shot 9 times bleeding on a mountain and everyone around me was dead very very traumatizing event and since one of the bullets went through my pelvis I was told I wouldn’t be allowed in the infantry or airborne or rangers or sf and after my deployment I was going to the rangers with my team leader and a couple other and they did passed deployed a bunch but I didn’t I didn’t even make it through one deployment then had brain surgery hip replacement and a couple others but I always say I was just airborne infantry but I’ve learned I did my part In 2007 when I deployed it was a rough one in the waygal valley kunar and nuristan Afghanistan shit was rough but I always wish I could have done more

Out of curiosity how much did you weigh going into Marine BMT? I was surprised when you said you came out at 142 because sometimes I worry I don’t have the right build to become special forces, but that’s pretty much where I’m at, 6’ and 145 lbs. My body fat is about 19% and I’ve been strength training for the passed year or so, looking for a pool I can start going to for swimming practice. Just trying to gauge myself a little. Love the videos, really pushing me to be my best and work towards what I want in life.

I really want to be a Force Recon Marine or a Marine Raider. I'm really happy to hear that my mos can be almost anything in the marines as long as I'm a unique asset to the team. I thought I can be: Infantry, Combat Engineer, Ground Intelligence Officer or Motor Transport. I really want to be a part of the Special Operations in the marines. If there is any tips that you guys can give me I'd gladly listen! Thank you for the informative video!

That’s my biggest issue over the last half decade that seems to keep getting worse. I joined right after my seniors got back from Afghan and that was the last rotation to that area. I spent the next 4 years deploying on meus and training comparing myself to combat vets. That’s all I joined for was to go after bad guys and I never got to. This morning a buddy messaged in the group chat someone else just took their own life again. There’s at least 3 marines kill themselves whether it’s been because of that or something else. I always wonder if it’s just me.
