VIDEO: A couple of hours in the late afternoon to early evening at Anniesland station, on the Argyle and North Clyde Lines and the terminus of the Maryhill Line, featuring ScotRail class 156s, 158s, 170s, 318s, 320s and 334s.
Anniesland station was first opened as 'Great Western Road' in 1874 by the Stobcross Railway on the route from Stobcross (now Exhibition Centre) to Maryhill Central.
In 1886, Knightswood Tunnel was constructed just west of the station by the Glasgow City and District Railway, along with the route between Partickhill and College (now High Street) via Glasgow Queen Street Low Level. This meant the station could be served by trains to Dalmuir, Dumbarton and Helensburgh in the west and Glasgow Queen Street, Coatbridge and Bathgate in the east. This would be the basis for much of the 'North Clyde Line'.
The line through the station was electrified as part of the North Clyde Electrification project in 1960, the first of many within the Strathclyde region. The chord of track that ran through to Maryhill fell out of use by 1980 after its signal box was destroyed in a fire and was removed completely by 1985.
In 2005, in preparation for the opening of the Argyle Line's Larkhall branch bringing increased traffic to the main line, the Maryhill Line was extended to terminate at Anniesland, via the construction of a bay platform which ran parallel to the eastbound platform. This came into operation on 28 September 2005.
In January 2016, a new chord of track was built to allow trains from the main lines to access the Maryhill Line. This was in preparation for it to become a major diversionary route during the closure of Glasgow Queen Street (High Level) between 20 March and 8 August 2016.
