Bushey station was opened in 1841 by the London and Birmingham Railway (which opened four years prior), serving the rural village of Bushey in Hertfordshire and the suburb of Oxhey in the south of Watford.
The station was initially served by local services that ran from London Euston to the various towns and villages of rural Hertfordshire like Watford and Tring. However, in 1913, a loop of track was built that connected with the Watford and Rickmansworth Railway line that ran through Watford High Street to Watford Junction. This allowed that line to run trains from the line's termini at Watford Junction and Croxley Green, directly into London Euston.
Four years later, in 1917, the line was electrified with DC third rail and the station was additionally served by the London Underground's Bakerloo Line until the withdrawal of services north of Stonebridge Park in 1982. The Bakerloo Line was re-extended to Harrow & Wealdstone in 1984, as it stands today. Since then, the DC third rail lines have been operated by the London Overground between London Euston and Watford Junction, as part of the Watford DC Line (renamed to the Lioness Line in November 2024).
During World War II, protocol had it that signage on stations that gave away place names had to be blacked over, so that enemy soldiers didn't know where they were if they landed in the area. However, at the time, Bushey was known as 'Bushey & Oxhey' and, while protocol stated that the names "Bushey" and "Oxhey" had to be covered up, this didn't apply to the "&" sign (or 'Ampersand') so that still remained visible on the station's signage until after the war ended in 1945.
The station would be renamed from 'Bushey & Oxhey' to just Bushey in 1974.
