for a western city Paris is unusually compact and I suppose awkwardly crowded

Yup, Paris core, also called "intra-muros", which is the core municipality of Paris, is only spread over 105km² (Manhattan has 59km² to give you an idea) and packs 2.5 million inhabitants. The whole agglomeration or Greater Paris urban area is much much much larger and hosts 14.8 millions according to the latest official count (which tends to often be quite underestimated). The core is ultra dense and so is most of the "regular" metro. The RER, which is the regional express metro is much more expansive and covers the majority of the agglomeration, with much longer station spacing. In the core, you'll have a hard time finding a place that is farther than 400 meters / a quarter mile away from a metro station. That's also why RER lines A (the busiest) and B (second busiest) have such high frequencies with high capacity trains. Line A moves between 1.25 and 1.5 million passengers per day on a regular weekday. Line B is not that far behind. On these lines, you can see "station flow agents", that the operators refuse to call "pushers", even though that's exactly what they are. Just like the ones that existed in Tokyo (and maybe still exist?), their job is to facilitate door operations at peak hours... The "regular" metro line M1, opened in 1900 and converted to full driverless automation in the early 2010's moves more than 750K passengers per regular weekday. It runs parallel to RER line A for most of the central section. Metro line M14 (fully automated from day one) was built to alleviate the load on M1 and the core section of RER line A. And RER line E was built to offer a different East - West axis further North and the West extension (to open this year) will once again try to lighten the load on A and M1 from the business district (la Défense) towards the East. The 4 new automated metro lines currently being built of the Grand Paris Express project are expected to alleviate the load by providing faster mass transit from suburbs to suburbs, without crossing the core. What Paris does with metros is comparable to what Los Angeles does with highways : trying to cope with a huge traffic.
