A very enjoyable and short time spent at Goring and Streatley on the Great Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from Great Western Railway and Cross Country.
Goring and Streatley was opened by the Great Western Railway in 1840 as was the case with much of the network from London to Didcot. The station itself was never huge but it served its purpose well enough.
The station layout works as two side platforms and a central island platform. Only P1 and P2 are used for stopping traffic, however 3 and 4 will only ever be used when engineering works take place. The station was first called Goring but was later changed to Goring and Streatley in 1895 as to avoid confusion with the town called Goring-By-Sea.
The station hasn't really gone through much in the way of changes apart from being modernised every now and again to accommodate longer trains and the growth on population. The recent changes to the station come in the form of the platforms being lengthened to fully accommodate an 8 car train and the original footbridge needing to be replaced because of the catenary that was being installed last year. Because of this the old ladies waiting room and the toilet block were demolished on the island platform.
Last year the station took on average 400 thousand people.
My next station is going to be Pangbourne.
