10/13/2018 - It's high waters on the high iron!
Due to excessive heavy rains the past few weeks, the Mississippi River rose significantly, causing some pretty hefty flooding. Of course, this included the Davenport, Iowa riverfront, and along with it, the Canadian Pacific Davenport Sub. Over 1,000 feet of the mainline was completely submerged.
This didn't stop CP trains from powering through it.
At just more than a walking pace, 3 Canadian Pacific freight trains pushed through the floodwaters, creating an absolutely surreal sight to see. More info below the time-stamps*!
Please enjoy!
(0:03) CP 475 - Kansas City, MO to St. Paul, MN:
1. CP ES44AC #8868
2. CP ES44AC #8743
3. (R-DPU) CP AC44CW #8521
(9:34) CP 472 - Nahant, IA to Bensenville, IL
1. CP ES44AC #8727
2. CP AC44CW #8537
(19:35) CP 474 - St Paul, MN to Kansas City, MO
1. CP AC44C6M #8021
2. (R-DPU) CP ES44AC #8933
*The trains that came through today had to be issued clearance from a track foreman before entering the water. Typically, the foremen would check the depth of the water before each train and then issue clearance along with the special orders for crossing the water. I believe the rule is trains can't cross with head-end power if the water is deeper than 18 inches. As deep as it looks in this video, I guess it wasn't breaking that threshold. Each train was instructed to cross at no more than 3 mph. On top of that, after any engines were completely through and out of the water, they were to stop and Idle in Notch 4 for 10 minutes to heat and dry the traction motors which are AC electrically powered. As dangerous as this maneuver could look to the common eye, rest assured, it was very well coordinated as was done and safely as railroading gets!

Yep, plowing through versus cautiously going through is enormous. My Dad was an engineer with Erie Lackawanna for 40 years and said during flood conditions, you creep the train through. Otherwise, he said the cars behind the engines can hydroplane and derail. Didn’t think with that much weight it could happen....didn’t ask because Dad knew his stuff...God bless him, he passed away 5 years ago

Your dad was correct, cars directly behind locomotives do not have their full weight imposed onto the rails because of drawbar/coupling tension when the locomotives are exerting power.

I have worked a few floods like this as a conductor. Water can damage the traction motors in the locomotive trucks.....so sometimes we shoved a train through the flood to another set of locomotives on the other side.....locomotives stayed high and dry.

Little story for you . . Back in the mid-80's, in titchy South Wales, I had to travel 15 miles to work in Cardiff, from a small "Valleys" town to get to work. There was a helluva lot of snow, yet hardly any locals made it, as all the roads were clogged up. Luckily, I got there by train, which ploughed its way through the drifts and I was less than 10 minutes late!! I really really love our railways!!

Wall innb - in the Centennial Year for Canada (1967). Canadian Pacific started rolling out the “Multi-mark Logo” and all the primary coloured rolling stock. They also had a commercial that aired an year or so later that showed all their holdings - CP Rail, CP Ships, CP Transport, CP Air, CP Hotels. It was quite a stirring melody (or at least to me). I’ve tried to locate it on KZbin but not been successful.

Possible only with AC motors, with D.C. Motors on Conrail we were instructed if the water was over 2 inches above the rail don't run through it. D.C. Motors using armature brushes would ground out in waters this deep where as AC motors don't use carbon brushes so can operate safely through standing water you see here.

I've seen video of Indian ( country ) railways coming to a low spot with water covering the rails over a foot deep and they enter the water at near 30 mph with passenger trains mind you. So long as the D.C. Traction motors are closed up properly it won't harm the motors but if it did as soon as the motors dried out they would be fine. On the old New Haven Railroad at New London, Ct. is was standard operating procedure every morning for the ground relay to trip out until you opened the bypass switch. An hour later you could close the bypass ground relay switch and after everything was warm and dry no more ground relays. We parked the locomotives 5 to 10 feet from the ocean and fog rolled in every night. Pain in the rear end. I miss the old days oh yeah, power was Alco S1's to S4's Fairbanks Morse H16-44's and Alco RS-11's as well as Alco FA-1 and FA-2 and EMD GP-9's. I miss the old days. Cheers!

I am amazed that running a train when the tracks are underwater doesn't somehow destabilize the railbed and cause the gravel to displace and the tracks to slip around a little.

why would they need to idle the engines? If they were to speed up to normal track speed, the traction motors would heat up themselves and the wind caused by the speed of the train would allow for a faster drying of the motors. If the motors were not water resistant, they would short circuit as soon as they are submerged into the water. So either run through the water, and dont worry about it or dont?

Electric traction motors are cooled by air blown from blowers in the cabin through flexible ducts through the motors. That prevents water ingress if the water is no deeper than in the video.

Admittedly, I know nothing about railway construction. Is there ever a threat of the railroad ties floating in high water? I’ve seen what high water can do to a fixed dock - lifting the dock, pilings and all.
@RunninEight

Railroad ties are bound to the rails and can't really move freely unless they split at a very specific angle

Runnin' Eight I wasn’t sure if the ties could lift a section of rail if enough of them started to float. Thanks for the reply!

I have never seen anything like that. I used to be a locomotive mechanic and the manual always said under no circumstances should you operate a locomotive where the water touches the bottom of the traction motors. Looks like they got away with it but terrible idea.
@algrayson8965
@algrayson8965 5 жыл бұрын
Electric traction motors are cooled by air blown from blowers in the cabin through flexible ducts through the motors. That prevents water ingress. The trouble comes if the locomotive is turned off. When the air stops blowing the water would get inside the motor.

Well sure, you don't really move too fast when you plow through snow or water. You take it slow and let the raw power of the engine move the object in the way rather than letting the momentum do it.

Fermit The Krog well going fast will be better cuz what if the snow if thick and strong then you need speed but water you can go slow just not to fast cuz heck it may be heavy but to fast it could slip off the rails but what you say is kind of true and kind of not just what I think I don't want to make anyone mad just read don't say anything and it won't turn into a argument 😊
@fermitthekrog6318
@fermitthekrog6318 5 жыл бұрын
@@jasonodoniel6434 going fast makes sense sometimes with light snow and a non rotary snow plow, but if it's heavy and/or you have a rotary snow plow then it's highly suggested you move slow so you don't damage the blade/blades in the front. Odds are the reason the train is moving slow here isn't because it's trying to move the water, but rather becasue the engineer can't see the tracks or any damage and debris that may be on them.

I remember a few years ago I was on Amtrak to New York. Georgia, south and North Carolina were under flood warnings. Train was delayed almost 24 hours because of the strict 30 mph speed limit. Is that mandated trains go that slow in flood warned counties?
