I recently travelled on one from Fort William to Glasgow. Noisy and dated, yes, but to me it added to the charm. Combined with the incredible scenery of the West Highland Line, it felt like a real classic railway journey.

@Eskel the Trainspotter & Roblox Yes they were but I can't remember what they were like inside apart from the seat moquette was something like the Pacers and contemporary road coaches (the striped design that was commonplace in the 1980s). I always thought the 151s looked American in appearance and they had a very American spec as well with Cummins engines and a Twin Disc transmission that proved unreliable in the UK stop-start conditions... The Cummins is an American engine built for long distance interstate trucking; UK buses and lorries (and the Pacers) with the Cummins engines were prone to breaking down... I remember riding 150001 on the Matlock line and feel it should join the National Railway Museum collection alongside 142001 and 313001. I also remember the Class 154 (Class 150 based testbed for the 158s) before it was converted back to a standard Class 150. I think Northern should have retrofitted air conditioning in the 150 / 156s and 319/769s when they refurbished them...

Still ride on these to this day. Sheffield - Leeds / York line, northern rail. They are sometimes used for the Sheffield to York journey run 2x per day, in the morning only. Usually it's a single 142 / Pacer. I jump on at an un-manned station, where the line switches from the Leeds line to the York line. You have to change route when returning as York station staff get confused by the tickets. I use this route to go to the NRM when I can. I like DMU's but they are getting really tired now, bless em.

So interesting to read this comment! Nowadays there are zero 156s at York and Teesside is absolutely full of them. Occasionally 158s run around Teesside but it’s the odd 150, all of the 155s and a few 158s in York. The York-Leeds services are 195 Civitys. I wish there were still some pacers about, such a fascinating class.

Well most tube trains in the 1970s-80s were made by Metro-Cammell. I think the 1972-73 tube stock would have suited the Isle of Wight if it wasn't for the modifications to allow the D78 stock...

Probably as well the odd - looking Met-Camm 151 wasn't adopted. The running gear looks like the original design put under LT's "D78" Surface Stock. All the running gear was changed on those, as it had cracking frame problems. One of the old guards I worked with spent a lot of time on the Derby/Matlock line where they were tested.

These trains were the poxiest crappy trains ever to run on British Rail lines. Stinky toilets, manky carpets, no ventilation, noisy engines, crowded seats and too-short trains run on most lines leading to hellish overcrowding. Hell on rails.

Sounds a bit harsh… yeah, it’s looks are unattractive and it’s high time new rolling stock came and replaced them… but they still get the job done. After all my local line, the Glasgow and South Western line isn’t yet electrified, so these will maybe stick around for a bit longer on my local line or maybe be replaced by the Turbostars
