Yes during the first decade, the Joes had been coupled permanently together. But later all Joes had been equipped with an multiple train control system. The diesels remained at the train, controlled by the Joes. Sometimes the Joes continued to serve as tandems with the diesels, sometimes as single units. And yes, the back cab had been replaced. The room had been used to move some critical electrical components out of the main hood into a cooler area.

Thanks a lot unfortunately, I have missed the passenger trains topic last week, I would have recreated some stuff within the Olympian Hiawatha and the EP2 :-) Cheers TUME.

@TrainTrackTrav Answer - Part 3 The MILW employees called the demonstrator “Joseph Stalin’s little Electrics” and this name later changed to “Little Joe”. A few time later, the Milwaukee bought 12 of this electrics and improved it a lot in there own shops. This included increasing of weight. Finally the EF4s became the most powerful and most reliable electrics at the Milwaukee Road - and may be in the USA generally - but the “little” in the name never disappeared.

@TrainTrackTrav Answer - Part 2 The EF4s originally had been designed for russian RRs and there requirements. Therefore the electrics used to be much less of weight and included some other unusual parameters in comparison to american RRs. Due to the cold war, the locos had never been delivered to the Russians and GE had to look for other customers. One EF4 demonstrator was testified by the Milwaukee Road, but it failed due to its less traction effort caused be its less weight.

@TrainTrackTrav Answer - Part 1 Except EF4 #70, which is on display at Deer Lodge, Mt, all Joes had been stripped and sold to scrappers shortly after the end of the electrification in 1974. By the way, the name “Little” Joes, came actually from the adjective “little”.
