All in all, Princess Elizabeth (back then) was always destined to become Queen. Even if Wallis and Edward were allowed to marry, both were unable to produce heirs. How funny some people are born to fulfill a destiny and nothing can get in the way of that.

She also allowed her country to fall to socialism. Africa to communism. It was the press, her personal comments on rhodesia, silence in the genocide that mugabe enacted. Many things. Charles was one of the first to back the wef actually. They no longer have representative governance and can be prisoned for speech if someone has feelings. And canada, australia, and the government of the UK rule with the consent of the sovereign. Not the governed. That is law. Stop pretending they are merely the theater piece you love so much

Yes, but not until she was middle aged - we would not have had the essential goodness of King George VI, or the beauty of young Queen Elizabeth - though they would both have personally preferred more of a private life, they were crafted for duty.

The Windsors did not love each other because neither of them were capable of genuine love, but they believed that they felt love for each other. He was thoroughly obsessed with her and she was thoroughly obsessed with what he could provide to her. They were cruel, self centered evil people.

@greerstirling9665 I agree...the two are not mutually exclusive, and the book proved to me that David was a foolish "boy man" as well as a traitor to his country and family. David and Wallis were the epitome of MFEO (made for each other) - LOL!

We'll done!.Reading is one of the great loves of my life, but I'm 77 and though my interest never wanes, my eyes tire easily., so I am grateful for your reviews. Thanks to YT and you, I got to enjoy this book. I love history and the stories of people great and small who helped shape it. The best reading seasons for me have been cold dreary winters or warm sunny summers. Spring and fall are for going and doing--not much time to read. I always received books for Christmas, and in the summer I could cuddle up with another treasure perched in a tree, feeling gentle breezes, smelling the sweetness of leaves, grass and flowers. One place we lived had apple, pear and plum trees--I was in heaven. At age 13, for Christmas my mother gave me a ANNE FRANK'S DIARY and GONE WITH THE WIND. Anne's story profoundly changed my life forever. I read and understood the fictional love story of Rhett and Scarlet as a naive teenager, and found that when I re-read it as a grown woman, it became a whole new story to me. Wow--two-for-one.

The "What might have beens" are fascinating. If Edward hadn't abdicated, would Churchill have ever become Prime Minister? Sure he supported Edward during the abdication crisis, but he NEVER would have supported a pro-Hitler line. He always saw Hitler as a threat. As the crisis on the continent deepened, Churchill might have ended up leading a movement to *depose* the king and replace him with his brother. Kings have been dethroned before, even in England. And what would have happened to Edward then? He might have been permanently confined to some isolated place where he'd never be heard from, like Napoleon sent to St. Helena.

I agree it's not the divorcee angle that was the problem, it was the Nazi association, it's not only the UK that dodged a bullet, the whole of Europe would be very different today if the UK had sided with Germany, also given the size of the British Empire the world today would look very different

Cheere, I so enjoy your commentary and reading on these videos. Currently, I’m fascinated with this Truman Capote miniseries that is coming out. There’s a book about him and his “swans”. It might flow quite well with thiis Traitor King book because it is based in the same period. a lot of the women that were close friends with Truman Capote were extremely wealthy and hung out with Wallis and David at times. The author name is Leonard Learner and book Title is Capote's Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era. It would be fascinating to hear about Wallis and David’s contemporaries, and the fashion, fads, politics and trends of that era. Lots of scandals too!

I cannot post a new comment for some reason. David never grew up and remained a juvenile for his entire life. He never had to do chores, decide on a career or worry about money. It seems he never had to behave with deference to anybody. His relationship with Wallis was more of an anxious child trying to please a strict mother than husband and wife. How stupid would he have been to believe Hitler would win the war and crown David and Wallis the rulers of the realm? All of his family and relatives would have been executed like the Russian Romanovs in 1917 and then they would have been disposed of. Wallis did not have to marry him but she did. These two superficial idiots found each other and lived out their pathetic lives dodging any kind of financial responsibility, scamming every person that was drawn to them.

I watched a programme about Thelma Furness the mistress who Wallace stole Edward from. She had a lot of tragedy in her life, quite sad really. I think Wallace & Edward were destined to be together due to their self centred, grandiose and grasping personalities. I like to think that fate took a hand and this was a good thing because it led to our beautiful queen Elizabeth taking the throne after her brave father who stepped up to the mark during a turbulent time in our history. Thank you so much Cheere, I have enjoyed every one of these videos and appreciated your thoughts and interpretations delivered with sardonic humour with liberal sprinklings of sass

No question, Wallis was an accomplished manipulator. No doubt David was a traitor. However, if he’d been just a bit smarter, together they would have been much more dangerous. Churchill was in the position of having to tread a very fine line during this period.
@gloriasmess
@gloriasmess 7 ай бұрын
In common with other notable members of the Royal Family; Edward was foolish in his stubbornness, arrogance and overwhelming belief that his birth privileges as King would continue when he left the throne. Edward was clearly a traitor too. Many people in Europe did not know the extent (or even the beginning) of Hitler’s intentions. Why? Because Hitler hid the reality behind politics, extreme politics, yes. Most people could not have imagined what the Nazis were truly planning. Churchill was not always likeable, though he was an incredible statesman. He knew exactly what Hitler was doing, Churchill saw straight through Edward VIII too. For years Edward was fed false and decoy information about the Allied plans against Hitler.

Hi Cheere, thank you for another great book review. Your analysis is always spot on and I so enjoy the wit and humor you add to your analysis. I’d like to add another possible future read to your list, if I may. Granted, it involves a different type of royalty - Hollywood royalty - but I think it might interest you and your viewers. The book is titled: Furious Love, by Sam Kashner, and details the so-called “marriage of the century” between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The backdrop to their relationship is the jet-setting 1960’s, when fabulous wealth, which had previously been kept quiet and discreet, suddenly became garishly and publicly on display. One could argue that Elizabeth Taylor was the OG Kardashian. lol. Anyhoo, check it out. See what you think. 🤗

I have been reading about ANOTHER HENRY, a real man, a warrior, whose bravery, sacrifice and loyalty were astonishing. The modern day Prince Harry is not worthy to polish the boot of this man. In 1403 AT AGE 16, he defended his father, King Henry IV against rebels at the Battle of Shrewsbury. He took an arrow in the face but kept fighting. Afterwards he endured several painful surgeries to dislodge the arrow which was buried 6 inches deep in his head. This was followed by weeks of painful wound treatment which left him terribly disfigured. You will never see a full face portrait of him due to the terrible scars. Then in 1415 as King Henry V, he fought bravely, defeating the French in the Battle of Agincourt. Our Prince Harry has brought shame and disgrace on himself, his family, his ancestors, and his country. Apparently, he has no idea where he came from. He should have paid attention in school...

When you take into account what a masochist Edward was, is it too far fetched to think that he actually enjoyed watching Jews and other groups suffer? It's a bit disturbing that he had Wallis humiliate and degrade him as foreplay for/during their sexual romps. How many times did they play concentration camp guard and prisoner of war?

I believe Churchill did all he could to support the “romance” knowing it would lead to abdication, somewhat at the expense of his own reputation. But, certainly intelligence knew what he was doing. He knew war was coming. He wanted Windsor to trust him so he would confide in him throughout his perilous treachery, till he was safely removed to The Bahamas. Churchill was a military genius. He knew Windsor not only did not want the responsibility of the crown, but could never be trusted and would bring disaster on England. His tactics were a perfect example of keep your friends close, your enemies closer. Thanks for your great book studies! ❤️

Can imagine the scandal. As late as 1960 every film shown in a British cinema would end with the playing of Rule Britannia and the audience would stand up and sing along patriotically. So it was a completely different country back then. (Nowadays the government tell you you're evil if you express national pride outside of football/sports.)

Ahh….I’m going to miss you doing the Wallis impressions!! 😫 so damn funny. Especially when you read the part about that German officer hitting the bottle…& speeding in his car, with Wallace in the backseat…without the top on 🤣🤣🤣

Great review. Listening to it on audiobooks. There was a program on CBC the passionate eye about the book and the duke and it was well done in case some of your listeners are interested. Can’t wait for Diana book and am already reading Charles 3rd. It’s a great read so far. 😊

I’ve binge watched your reviews of this book the past two days. Your reviews are awesome. I think the book on Lord Mountbatten would be great to review.

Thank you Cheere you are truly fantastic at bringing these books to life. My conclusion from this book, Traitor King, and Spare and the royal family's response (LACK OF) to all the shenanigans of these people is for my country to become a republic in the next 10yrs. Did you expect that?

. The king must defend the creeds and biblical law as well as be faithful and trustworthy… but the Reformation did point this out
