I've taken this tram so many times in my childhood, but it never occured to me that it's the northernmost tram in the world! I grew up in Bergen, but my extended family lives in Trondheim, so we went to visit them on countless vacations, and one of the things we did really often was take the tram, for the experience of the ride itself, and then visit the cafe at the final stop, I seem to recall. Fond memories.

Have you already heard about, that your hometown Bergen has reinstalled a Tram System (Lightrail) in the meantime ? Although the new tracks of the remaining historical museum in old downtown, are growing step by step with every needed street being reconstructed. So they share the same gauche, both systems - public transport and tourism traffic - will be united one day. A really very interesting case, in any way, this nice and innovative city !

There was once plans for a tram in even further north in Norway, in Glomfjord which is even north of Arkhangelsk. Unfortunately the economy following world war one lead to the plans being dropped, but you can still find traces of the would-be line around the streets. I've been there and it's kinda surreal, because it's a tiny town, I had to ask what they were for and the local I was with wasn't sure, she thought it was something the Germans made during the war.

Beautiful scenery and great photography. With so much single track and private right of way running, it looks more like an interurban railway than a streetcar / tram. Thanks for sharing!

I don't want to detract from this video, but where's the southern-most working tramline in the world? I used to work on the tramways in Melbourne in the late eighties and one of my coworkers once met a German guy who had come to Melbourne especially to ride on every tram line (this was his idea of a holiday, apparently). The German bloke said the No. 64 tram (City-East Brighton) was the southern-most tram line in the world. This is also coincidental because on this very same route everyday I used to get off the tram at the very last (southernmost) stop to go to primary school as a child. However since then a lot of cities have started or restarted tram lines. Does anyone know if there are any cities, eg in New Zealand or Chile, with trams that are further south than Melbourne?
@jakartaman33655 жыл бұрын
Argentina has trams, not sure about Chile though, and Rio in Brazil has trams. Not sure if that's south of Melbourne ( my old home town ) though.
@yourTuBaer5 жыл бұрын
@@jakartaman3365 Chile has no trams anymore, there are two wikipedia articles about closed and still open tram lines around the world.

Lovely line, it only needs to be extended to the railway station. And perhaps serve the other side of the Nidelva, too. Personally, I'd stay on Kongens Gata to Sondre Gata and then to the station. Onwards, I'd go over the Bakke Bru and perhaps to the Ikea. If I'm dreaming, I can see an entire tram system in Trondheim, but alas, I don't think it will happen :)

The Trondheim trams 2.6 metres wide, whereas the usual widht of metre gauge trams is 2.2 to 2.3 m.
@janciloz4 жыл бұрын
Trams in Zurich are 2.4m wide. Trams in Bratislava are 2.5m wide (Czechoslovak standard). :) Both of these cities have metre gauge trams.

Why do trams have rear windshield wipers? BTW, I see that some stretches of lines are single track - I saw it only in Osijek, Croatia before (or was it just the entrance to the depot?) It is sad to see that Trondheim shut down most of its tram network relatively recently, in contrast to the prevailing trend of reintroduction of this most reliable and efficient mode of mass transit.

I am nitpicking, but there is factory called Otamäen vaunutehdas manufacturing trams in Northern Finland. They have a long test track with stops, etc. on their facility so technically one could argue Finland having the world's most northern tramway.
@timosha213 жыл бұрын
Haha. "test" track. Then it is the most northerly tramway system that transports passengers.

Here in uk our trains stop running with the first snowflake! And we would have to have 'elf 'n' safety fencing all along the line too cos apparently we're too stupid not to stand in front of a tram!!

Its a tram because of the wagons used which is pretty short. You have both tram and light rail lines going outside or connecting cities etc. The Belgium coast tram line is worlds longest tram line etc. However, light rail is sort of trams with longer platforms and can be more similar to a subway etc.

New "Equi.City-Buses" for Trondheim: That was clear again, that the City of Trondheim would fall for this !!! I could almost have bet on it ... ... double articulated buses and guided buses are an INFERIOR REPLACEMENT for a transport system, that we already have for long: TRAM / LIGHTRAIL. No possibility of train formation (tractions). No turf tracks are possible. Instead, there is a lack of safety on streets and in pedestrian zones, due to the confusion without lane guidance. The partly dismantling of the tram was the biggest mistake in the city's history of Trondheim, in terms of transport policy and the tram survived only thanks to the great commitment of its citizens united in a private company, which has impressed and inspired people worldwide. But instead of doing their homework - in view to traffic turnaround, climate change and e-mobility - and correcting this blatant mistake and routing the remaining GRAAKALTRAM BACK DOWNTOWN, this municipality has no other creative idea, than to purchase double articulated buses. It has to be said very clearly, that this is not an innovation at all, but a sham package ! And that is by the way, why the french CITY OF CAEN has switched from those buses BACK TO THE TRAM. After all, one should not forget, the tram is also the forefather of e-mobility ;-) .
